ASSIGNMENT NO-3

1) Weight of two blocks A & B are 100N and


150N respectively. Find the smallest value of
horizontal force “F” to just move the lower
block B, If
(1) The block is retained by a string,
(2) When string is removed.
(Ans: (1) 82.5N, (2) 62.5N)
2) Determine the force P to cause motion to
impend. Take masses A and B as 9 kg and 4
kg respectively and coefficient of sliding
friction is 0.25. The force P and rope are
parallel to the inclined plane.
(Ans: 3.09N)

3) The block A as shown in fig. supports a load


W= 5000N and is to be raised by forcing the
wedge B under it. The angle of friction for all
the surfaces in contact is = 15°. Determine
the force P that is necessary to start the
wedge under the block. The block and wedge
have negligible weights.
(Ans: = 5959N)

4) A person of weight W ascends the 5m ladder


shown. How far up the ladder may the
person climb before the sliding motion of
ladder take place? µ= 0.3

KINEMATICS OF PARTICLES

1. The acceleration of the train, starting from rest at any instant is given by the

expression a = ( ) m/s2, where v is velocity of the train in m/s. Find the

velocity of the train when its displacement is 20 m and its displacement when
velocity is 64.8 kmph.
2. During a test the car moves in a straight line such that for a short time its

velocity is defined by v = 0.3 (9 m/s, where t is in second. determine

its position and acceleration when t = 3 sec. given at t = 0, s = 0

3. Automobile A and B are travelling in adjacent highway lanes and at t=0 have
positions and speed shown. Knowing that automobile A

has a constant acceleration of 0.6 m/ and that of B

has constant deceleration of 0.4 m/ .


a) When and where A will overtake B
b) The speed of each automobile at that time

4. Water drips from a faucet at the rate of 5 drops per


second as shown in fig. determine the vertical
separation between two consecutive drops after the
lower drop has attended a velocity of 3 m/s.

6. Fig below shows a plot of versus time for

a particle moving along x-axis. What is the


speed & distance covered by the particle after
50s? Find also the maximum speed & the time
at which the speed is attained by the particle.

the velocity of end A is 3.6 m/s to the right.
Determine the angular velocity of AB & the velocity
at end B & center C at the instant shown.

1. Following fig. shows aw 4kg mass resting on a


smooth plane inclined 30° with horizontal. A
cord passes from this mass over a frictionless,
massless pulley to an 8kg mass which when
release ill drop vertically down. What will be the
velocity of 8kg mass 3sec. after it is released

from rest. Take g 9.8 m/

2. The block shown in the fig. has a weight 500N & is
acted upon by a variable force having magnitude P =
200N. Compute the block velocity 2 sec. after he P
has been applied. The block initial velocity is 3m/s
down the plane. Also find the distance travelled by

the block at the end of 2sec. Take = 0.3 Ans: v= 15.6m/s; 15.94m

3. A 20N block slides with initial velocity of 2m/s down an inclined plane on to a
spring of modulus 1000N/m for a distance of 1m.
find the maximum compression of the spring
neglecting friction. Ans: 177.63mm

4. A collar A of mass 10kg moves in a vertical guide as shown in fig. neglecting the
friction between the guide & the collar, find its
velocity when it passes through position (2) after
starting from rest in position (1). The spring
constant is 200N/m & free length of spring is
200mm. take g = 10m/ Ans: v = 3.8m/s
