1.2.2 Codes and Standards
Publications by the organizations listed below form part of this specification. Each
publication shall be the latest revision and addendum in affect on the date this
specification is issued for construction unless noted otherwise. Except as modified by
the requirements specified herein or the details on the drawings, all works included in
this specification shall conform to the applications of these publications.
1. ACI 530 Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures
2. ACI 530.1 Specification for Masonry Structures
2 MASONRY
Masonry design, materials, and construction shall comply with Building Code
Requirements for Masonry Structures (ACI 530) and Specification for Masonry
Structures (ACI 530.1) except as modified or supplemented herein.
2.1 General
Walls are classified as 8 inches (1 brick) and 6 inches (1/2 brick) thickness of
masonry. The masonry shall be brick, hollow concrete brick or concrete masonry units
laid contiguously in mortar. All units shall be laid with full shoved mortar joints and all
head, bed, and wall joints shall be solidly filled with mortar. Upon completion of

plastering walls shall be regularly cured by spraying water. No surface cracks are
allowed to occur after the plaster hardened.
2.2 Materials
2.2.1 Concrete Masonry Units
ASTM C90, lightweight or normal weight, smooth faced, hollow, load-bearing modular
masonry units.
Aggregates shall conform to ASTM C33 and C331. Shrinkage shall not exceed
amount recommended in ASTM C426. The compressive strength shall be no less
than 1,700-psi.
2.2.2 Concrete Bricks
This material shall comply with ASTM C55 Grade S with a linear shrinkage limited to
0.05 percent. Normal weight aggregates in ASTM C33 shall be used.
2.2.3 Building Bricks (Solid masonry units made from clay)
This material shall comply with ASTM C62, Grade N.W. They shall be clean, sound,
hard, thoroughly burned throughout, square, true in shape, property and uniform in
size and quality, non-porous and must give a clear ring when struck.
2.2.4 Mortar
This material mortar shall use mixture of 1cement : 4 sand by weight. Up to at least 1
feet above floor level, mortar wall shall use water tight mixture of 1 cement : 2 sand by
weight. This watertight mixture shall also be used in all toilet walls.
2.2.5 Masonry Unit Samples
Samples of each type of brick or block shall be submitted for approval before
deliveries are commenced.
All subsequent deliveries shall generally be up to the standard of the samples
approved.
2.2.6 Handling and Storage of Masonry Materials
No damaged units shall be used. Care is to be taken in on and off loading, stacking,
and handling. Masonry units shall be stacked under cover off the ground.

Roof deck and flashing shall be manufactured from steel conforming to ASTM A653
and A924 - G90, having a minimum yield strength of 78,600 psi and a minimum
thickness of 28-gage (0.016 inch), equivalent to Spandek Hi-Ten by BHP Steel or
approved equal. Panel configuration shall be formed with integral ribs (not over 6-
inches on center) and overlapping side laps. The overlapping rib shall contain at least
½ of the area of metal for the interior rib.
3.1.1.2 Gutters
28-gage minimum thick galvanized steel; one-piece construction shall be completed
with outlets, fittings, and conductors. Joints shall be lapped 1-inch, riveted and
soldered; rivets shall be spaced no farther than 1½-inches apart for the full girth of the
section. Ends shall be similarly secured. Outlets shall be flanged and soldered to
inside of gutters, shall be provided with a locked seam, and shall extend into
downspout at least 3-inches. Provide easily removed and cleaned strainer for each
collection box. Provide butt type expansion joints.
3.1.1.3 Fasteners
Annular ring nails, screw, rivets, and bolts of non-corrosive materials.
3.1.1.4 Sealant
Two-part polyurethane sealant complying with ASTM C920.
3.1.1.5 Cradles
Minimum 1/8-inch by 1-inch cold rolled galvanized steel bands.
3.1.1.6 Copings
Form copings with sloped top and mitered corners, provide a continuous cleat at the
outside edge.
3.1.2 Fabrication
Form sheet metal on bending brakes. Shape, trim, and hand-seam sheet metal on the
bench with the proper tools as far as practicable. Make bends and folds for
interlocking metal joints to allow for expansion and contraction. Form true, sharply
defined straight edges and seams.
