2.0 INTRODUCTION

This calculation covers the design of the bracket to support a platform camera at Ickenham
station. The new bracket will be fixed to the existing drop-pole on the existing camera post.

The bracket comprises a pair of "L" shaped welded tubes as shown on figure 1.

The upper leg comprises a 475mm long 48.3 x 3 CHS vertical member welded at the top to a
horizontal 48.3 x 3 CHS member and fixed to the existing drop-pole via a split cylindical upper
clamp.

The upper clamp comprises a 115mm Ø OD x 77.5mm Ø ID split tube with 4 x M8 screws.

The lower leg comprises a 48.3 x 3 CHS vertical member welded at the top to a horizontal 48.3
x 3 CHS member and fixed to the vertical member of the upper leg via a split cylindical
lower clamp.

The lower clamp comprises a 90mm Ø OD x 49mm Ø ID split tube with 4 x M8 screws.

The design of the bracket will consider the following loading conditions:

1) Direct tension due to self weight Permanent

2) Overturning due to eccentric load of the camera housing. Permanent

3) Wind load of ±0.50kN/m2 arising from the aerodynamic effects of passing trains. Transient

4) Vandal loading of 1kN horizontal @ camera level acting longitudinally or laterally. Transient

5) Vandal loading of 1kN vertical Transient

The following loading combinations will be adopted:

Combination 1 : (1.35 * Permanent Loads) + (1.5 * Wind pressure loads)

Combination 2 : (1.0 * Permanent Loads) + (1.0 * Vandal load horizontal + vertical)

The bracket design shall comprise the following:

1) Check CHS tube for bending - considered to be OK by inspection

2) Check CHS tube for tension - considered to be OK by inspection
3) Check upper leg/clamp interface weld for shear and tension
4) Check lower leg/clamp interface for shear and tension
5) Check M8 screws for shear and tension

Note: A 3mm fillet weld has been assumed

From the table above the vandal loads govern over wind loads.

For a conservative design, the design vertical load will be taken as the sum of the design loads
for self-weight and Vertical vandal load. Similar for design horizontal loads and design moment.

Design vertical load Fy = 0.550 + 1.000

= 1.550 kN

Design horizontal load Fx = 0.095 + 1.000

(applied in x direction)
= 1.095 kN

Design moment Mz = 0.052 + 0.200 + 0.550

= 0.802 kNm
