Assignment # 5 – Induction Machines

An 8 pole, 460 V, 60 Hz, 897 rpm, induction machine rated 373 kW, power factor of 0.73 at full load,
is used in a pumped storage facility. Full load efficiency is 95.7 %. It is driven by a regenerative full
converter variable frequency motor drive. Parameters, in ohm/phase, referred to the stator (connected
in Y) are:
R1 = 0.0040 X1 = 0.071 Xm = 0.71
R2 = 0.0014 X2 = 0.044
Rotational losses (mechanical and core losses) are neglected.
1. Rated operation – performance characteristics calculated from nameplate values
(a) Give the synchronous speed for rated frequency. Compute rated slip. Repeat for a 20 Hz
operation, assuming the same slip in rpm.
(b) Find the motor rated current, input real, reactive and apparent power. Find the rated shaft torque.
2. Rated voltage and frequency – performance based on the 60 Hz equivalent circuit
(a) Draw the equivalent circuit of the motor for a 60 Hz operation, showing all values in ohm and pu.
Explain the differences in parameter values with a typical transformer.
(b) For rated speed, compute the motor current and power factor. Compute the shaft power and
torque. Calculate the efficiency. Compare with values in Question 1.
3. Starting characteristics – assume the motor is connected directly to the 60 Hz grid
(a) Find the starting torque and current for rated voltage. Assume the rotor resistance is increased by
a factor of 5, the rotor reactance reduced by a factor of 5. Compute the ratio of starting current to
rated current and the reactive power drawn by the motor.
(b) The motor is started at a reduced voltage of 50 % rated voltage. Find the starting current and
torque. Compute the ratio of starting current to rated current.
4. Generator operation – rated frequency
(a) The machine is driven by the water turbine. For a speed of 903 rpm, at rated voltage and
frequency, compute the slip. Indicate the mode of operation. Compute the electromagnetic power
and torque.
(b) Draw the torque speed characteristic around the synchronous frequency for motor and generator
operation. Indicate the rated operating point, torque and speed.
5. Variable frequency motor operation – 20 Hz supply
(a) Draw the equivalent circuit of the motor for a 20 Hz operation. Indicate all motor impedance values.
Compute the applied voltage considering that the motor is operated at constant V/f.
(b) For rated slip (in rpm calculated at rated speed), give the speed. Compute the shaft power and
torque. Compute the speed regulation at full load.
5. Operating conditions – summary – determining the load operating speeds
(a) Draw, on the same graph and using the results obtained in Questions 2 to 4, the approximate
torque/speed curves for following conditions, in motoring and generation for a 60 Hz, rated voltage
operation, for slip varying from 1 to 0 to – 1, including the starting conditions
(b) Repeat for a 20 Hz operation, constant V/f, for slip values between breakdown torque points.
