A Revised 3.2 Manufacturer Standard Paint System 07-23-2019 Kippel, Brad
1. SCOPE
This specification gives the requirements for Anticorrosion Painting systems suitable for a C3
corrosive environment as per ISO 12944-5, with High Durability (H) as per ISO 12944-5. This
specification defines the primer paint system that will be applied in the fabrication workshop prior to
shipment, along with any additional paint that is applied in the Belfort or Greenville workshops for
equipment that ships to Belfort or Greenville for assembly. Equipment that ships directly to site (MSD
– Material Ship Direct) will ship with the defined primer paint system defined within the documents.
This specification does not define the final/finish coat that is applied at the job site after installation;
refer to MLI CF0 for definition of this paint, as well as its application guidelines. This specification
does not cover any special coating intended for purposes other than anticorrosion (i.e. high gloss
painting for low friction or coatings for fire-proofing).
2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS
Unless otherwise specified, all codes and standards herby referenced shall be to the latest official
revision available at the time of GE Purchase Order issuance.
ISO 12944 – Paints and varnishes – Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint
systems
3 REQUIREMENTS
The following list of components are not to be painted, unless otherwise required in the MLI
Hardware Ordering Drawing, Functional Specification, and/or Build-to-Print Drawings
Stainless Steel
Aluminum alloys
Cooper alloys
Non-metallic parts
The following list of components may utilize the Manufacturer’s Standard Paint System provided that
the Manufacturer’s Standard Paint System: 1) meets C3H as per ISO 12944-5, and 2) is suitable for
the operating temperature service specified in Table 1 of this document. The final color is as per the
Manufacture’s Standard.
This section identifies the painting system to be used for equipment that is manufactured for and
shipped to the GE Belfort or GE Greenville Workshop. This type of hardware will ship directly to the
GE Belfort or GE Greenville Workshop; and the supplier will receive Logistics markings from GE
showing this.
The painting systems in this section shall not be used for equipment that is manufactured and
shipped directly to site (MSD hardware).
If a supplier is unclear as to whether or not their hardware is equipment that is manufactured for and
shipped to the GE Belfort or GE Greenville Workshop, please consult the cognizant GE Buyer or GE
Engineer.
The hardware supplier shall paint their equipment in accordance with 444T0108 – Belfort
Manufacturing Shop Painting Specification, for items that ship to the Belfort Workshop.
The hardware supplier shall paint their equipment in accordance with 555T0108 – Greenville
Manufacturing Shop Painting Specification, for items that ship to the Greenville Workshop.
This section identifies the painting system to be used for equipment that is manufactured and
shipped directly to site (MSD hardware). This type of hardware will receive Logistics markings from
GE showing a destination other than the GE Belfort or GE Greenville Workshops.
The painting systems in this section shall not be used for equipment that is manufactured for and
shipped to the GE Belfort or GE Greenville Workshop.
If a supplier is unclear as to whether or not their equipment is MSD hardware, please consult the
cognizant GE Buyer or GE Engineer.
Table 1 defines the painting systems to be applied based on the temperature and use classifications
of the MLI. All Painting System Codes in Table 1 refer to the codes listed in 222T0108.

Note 1 – If an area is covered by shop installed acoustic or thermal insulation, only the Primer coat
for the specified Painting System needs to be applied to this area that is covered by shop installed
acoustic or thermal insulation. Areas that are not covered by insulation, as well as areas in which
the insulation is field installed shall be fully painted as per the specified Painting System.
Note 2 – If an area inside of the gas path is covered by shop installed thermal insulation, no paint
needs to be applied. Areas inside of the gas path that are not covered by thermal insulation, as
well as areas in which the thermal insulation is field installed, shall be painted only with the Primer
coat for the specified Painting System.
Note 3 – The temperature resistance of polyurethane paints for continuous operation is 120oC.
For operating temperatures up to 150oC some color variation is expected due to the pigments
degrading (i.e. from RAL 9010 to RAL 1001).
