as cops allowed them to collect the
water from a source around half
kilometers away. While this deadly

Srinagar, April 10: In the backdrop
of pandemic Coronavirus, National
Testing Agency (NTA) Friday extended
the date for correction of online
application form for NEET-2020 upto
April-14.
In this regard, the NTA Director
General (DG) Vineet Joshi said, “In
view of the hardships faced by the
aspirants of NEET (UG) -2020 due to
COVID-19 epidemic, the NTA has
further expanded the scope of making
corrections in the application form.”
Joshi said that the scope also includes
changes in the choice of cities for centre
opted by the candidates for NEET (UG)
- 2020. “The facility for correction in
the particulars including choice of
cities for centre in the online application
form is operational now on the NTA
official website that will be available
upto April-14,”he said.
In a statement, Joshi further said
that the correction in the particulars
in the online application forms shall
be accepted upto 05.00 PM and
submission of fee upto 11.50 PM of
April-14.
“The candidates are requested to
undertake the corrections very
carefully as no further chance of
correction will be provided to the
candidates,” he said.
Joshi said, that the NTA will make
efforts to allot city of examination to
the candidates in order of choices now
opted by them in their application form.
“However, due to administrative
reasons, a different city may be allotted
and the decision of the NTA regarding
allotment of Centre shall be final,” he
said.

Jammu and told her that required
appropriate measures for their relief
and return to their respective states have
not been taken, so far by the State
Administration and invited her attention
towards their problems for their
resolution.
G.A.Mir expressed serious concern over the
pathetic condition of poor class of J&K and told
Madam Gandhi that the BPL, AAY & PPH classes
were in great difficulty, as that, the ration and
other essential commodities have not reached
them as was claimed by the State Administration,
emphasizing her to take up the matter with the
Centre inorder to ensure that these below poverty

about the steps taken by the J&K PCC,

down, besides the proactive role played
by the Party Leaderships & District
Congress Committees (DCCs) with regard
to ensuring respite to Labourers and poor
people on account of essentials, medicines,

PCC President also told Madam Gandhi
that BDCs, Municipal Committees and
Corporators of the Party are putting in
their strenuous efforts from day one to sanitize
their respective jurisdictions and beyond that
aggressively inorder to ensure that the deadly
virus do not impact the community, besides
apprising her about the various relief measures
taken by them in the interest of general public.
Madam Gandhi was also urged to impress upon
the Centre Govt to upgrade the health infrastructure
in J&K, besides intensifying the testing of suspects,
on war footing basis, besides ensuring every
required facilities to Doctors, Nurses and other
health workers, who are fighting against the
deadly virus on frontline.
It may be recalled here, the Congress president
Sonia Gandhi earlier wrote to Prime Minister
Narendra Modi suggesting five measures to save
money the coronavirus, including suspending
a project to redo Delhi's central vist and banning
media advertisements by the government for
two years. She also called for putting on hold
foreign visits by the President, Vice president
and Union ministers as well as chief ministers
of states and bureaucrats, and slashing the
government's expenditure budget, other than
salaries, pensions and central sector schemes,
by 30 per cent.

oronaviruses are a large family of viruses
which may cause illness in animals or hu-
mans. In humans, several coronaviruses
are known to cause respiratory infections
ranging from the common cold to more severe dis-
eases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome
(MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
(SARS).
The most recently discovered coronavirus causes
coronavirus disease COVID-19. People of all ages can
be infected by this new coronavirus. Older people,
and people with pre-existing medical conditions (such
as asthma, diabetes and heart disease) appear to be
more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the
virus.

oronavirus (cov) popularly called COVID-19

Every pandemic is unique, which makes predict-

guesswork than science. What’s more, there simply

worst-case estimates of something like COVID-19.
Just how big an impact can a pandemic like COVID-19

Survival in the trying times becomes a matter of
concern and ponderation both for the rich and the
poor. The Corona pandemic has nudged the mind of the
whole world about the question of survival. The entire
population of the world is in a situation where the sur-
vival seems utterly difficult and impossible because of
this novel pandemic: the pandemic that defies not only
diagnosis but also medication.
Marx, as we know, divided the society into three eco-
nomic classes, bourgeois, proletariat, and lumpen-
proletariat. Among the three, lumpen-proletariat is the
most precarious and disadvantageous class. Beggars,
daily-wagers, prostitutes, criminals, and insane belong
to this class.
The condition of this class can never change. Besides
this, this class can never change its social position
because of their economic, physical, social and psycho-
logical precarity. This class is the part of our society.

Therefore, people of all ages are advised to take
steps to protect themselves from the virus.
What are the treatment options for COVID-19?
Is there any medicine?
Antibiotics do not work against viruses, they only
work on bacterial infections. COVID-19 is a viral
disease, so antibiotics do not work. Antibiotics should
not be used as a means of prevention or treatment of
COVID-19. They should only be used as directed by
a medical doctor to treat a bacterial infection.
There is no evidence that current medicine can
prevent or cure the disease. WHO does not recommend
self-medication with any medicines, including anti-
biotics, as a prevention or cure for COVID-19?
To date, there is no vaccine and no specific antivi-
ral medicine to prevent or treat COVID-2019. How-
ever, those affected should receive care to relieve
symptoms. People with serious illness should be
hospitalized. Majority of the patients recover due to
supportive care.
Should I wear a face mask?
Only wear a face mask if you are ill with COVID-19
symptoms (especially coughing) or looking after
someone who may have COVID-19. Please remember
that disposable face mask can only be used once. If
you are not ill, then you need not to wear a mask.
China accounts for approximately 20% of global
GDP at purchasing power parity and obviously it will
impact the economy globally. In terms of trade, Chi-
na is the world’s largest exporter and second largest
importer. Thus the outbreak of COVID -19 in China
is expected to have a significant impact on economy
globally including economic slowdown, trade, supply
chain disruption etc.
As per the reports of World Economic Forum, the
global GDP is expected to grow at -2.2%. It also fore-
casted that Western Europe is expected to experience
the negative growth rate of -6% (most badly effected).
U.S.A is expected to grow by -2.8%. China is ex-
pected to grow by +1%(earlier it was 6%to 8%). India
being the major import partner to China will not be
an exception to this economic slowdown. Indian
economy is expected to grow by 2% as per the WEF
report.
In context of Indian economy, it is very unfortunate
that this pandemic has arrived at such a time when
Indian economy was already in slowdown and bank-
ing system too is not that strong. In addition to this,
India has a weak medi-infrastructure with almost
negligible primary health care infrastructure.
Due to these reasons this pandemic is very differ-

Myth reporters
As the world is battling hard with the Pandemic
Disease caused by Corona Virus, various conspiracies,
myths and misinformation is being flooded at various
platforms including newspapers, news networks, social
networking sites and blogs; from offering unverified
home remedies to tackle the virus, to floating fake
advisories and Food Safety tips asking people to avoid
foods such as chicken, meat etc.
While many posts, news items and blogs encourage
people to take Health Supplements, Multivitamins
soups to boost their immune system, others offer prom-
ise of immunity and cures through homemade medi-
cines from clove, onion, ginger etc. when consumed
in certain combinations of powders and drinks includ-
ing alcohol. These fake and unverified solutions to
Covid-19 being spread in the print and electronic me-
dia may have more dangerous effects on us than this
disease itself, self-medication and other life threaten-
But do we accept this factual statement? Most of us don’t.
But on humanitarian and ethical grounds we should
accept it and at the same time we should take care of
the people who belong to this Marxian economic class.
The pandemic that has put a kind of existential brake
on the survival of the entire world population should
alert us about the survival of the other people in our
society, the people who are not in a position to feed
themselves. We should help each other every time. But
alas! We are insensitive to the plight and precarity of
our fellow humans.
The whole world is in a lockdown situation. No one is
allowed to move. Restrictions ring everywhere. The
survival even for the rich people has become extreme-
ly difficult and utterly impossible despite the resources
and victuals that the rich usually store beforehand in
order to fend off themselves against any natural calam-
ity or existential exigency.
When the capitalists, rich, and bourgeois are in a way
at a precarious and vulnerable position because of this
pandemic, the question arises how are the proletariats
(working class) and lumpen-proletariats surviving in
this lockdown? It is a question that should give us creeps
and should also compel us to think about them, if at all,
we bother to care about humans. We do not care a fig

How to use, remove face mask?
 Remember, a mask should only be used by health
workers, care takers, and individuals with
respiratory symptoms, such as fever and cough
 Before touching the mask, clean hands with
an alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water
 Take the mask and inspect it for tears or holes
 Check which side is the top side
 Ensure the proper side of the mask faces out-
wards (the coloured side)
 Place the mask to your face
 Pull down the mask’s bottom so it covers your
mouth and your chin
 After use, take off the mask; remove the elastic
loops from behind the ears while keeping the
mask away from your face and clothes, to avoid
touching potentially contaminated surfaces
of the mask
 Discard the mask in a closed bin immediately
after use
 Perform hand hygiene after touching or dis-
carding the mask – Use alcohol-based hand rub
or wash your hands with soap and water.
Prevention
As we all know that prevention is better than cure,
precautionary measures will have a greater impact
on shutting down the transmission cycle of the virus
ent from global crises of 2008-9 and probably this
pandemic might be India’s greatest emergence since
independence as rightly said by former RBI Governor
Raghu Ram Ranjan.
Yet there is no reason to despair. Though India
cannot match the resources of developed countries
but with best economists in the world, Indian govern-
ment with right set of policies and priorities, can fight
this virus and can even set the stage for a much more
hopeful tomorrow. What next? As a student of econom-
ics, I here propose some remedial measures:
 The utmost priority, of course is to control the
spread of this pandemic by means of social
distancing & rigorous quarantines. The 21- day
lockdown was a step in a right direction, so that
India gets enough time to prepare itself to fight
this virus. But this is not enough, the most
important thing India needs to do right now is
to TEST, TEST & MORE TEST as rightly said
by WHO. It will help India to reduce the fog of
uncertainty as where the hotspots are
 The economic relief package of 1.7 lac crore(
roughly 1% of GDP) for vulnerable sections is
welcome, but as a student of Economics, I think
it is a very small amount relative to the scale

Unfortunately, unlike drugs, dietary supplements
are mostly self-prescribed with no input from informed
medical sources like doctors, nurses, or pharmacists.
Uncontrolled use of multivitamins and health supple-
ment raise issues of health safety itself, because the
efficacy of health supplements is dependent upon many
factors including homeostatic mechanisms that regu-
late absorption or excretion depending on the nutrient
status of its consumer.
These factors vary by age, sex, and physiologic state
(for example, pregnancy) and multiple or excess dosage
may have deleterious effect on liver, kidney act. Even,
some drug interactions may be fatal, like vitamin E
and aspirin which has the potential for an additive
antithrombotic effect. Similarly, vitamin E and war-
farin has been related to an increased risk of bleeding.
Our country being among the poor in education
standards, internet rumours and unverified forward-
ed safety tips may prove to be life threatening accidents
about the poor and precarious people of our society. We
do not bother to feed the hungry and nurse the wound-
ed and sick. Every country has a large percentage of
population that because of one reason or the other is
economically disadvantageous.
The world we are living in is highly inequal and unjust
in terms of economy. We should try to end this inequal-
ity. The section of the people (beggars, handicaps, and
insane) who mainly survive on the leftovers of the rich,
the question arises how would they be surviving in this
pandemic when the whole world is in lockdown? In
addition to this, have we made a prior arrangement for
them?
Most of the countries have no time to think and care
about them. We in India have a large percentage of
people who depend on daily wages. From street vendors
to rickshaw- pullers the list is long. What is the plight
of these daily wagers in this lockdown? Is the govern-
ment taking care of them? No doubt, the NGO’S and
government machineries both at the central and state
levels are working to reach out to these people but this
temporary care for them won’t help. We should learn a
lesson from this pandemic.
We should find a permanent solution to the economic
problems of these people. We cannot live our life hap-
and preventing it from spreading in the community.
A lot of prevention advice is going around, both good
and bad.
I hope it’s helpful to compile some of the former in
one place. Preventing the spread of an outbreak re-
quires a massive global effort, but here are steps
everyone can take. Below listed steps should be fol-
lowed for your own protection and for the protection
of others:
 Stay at home: Only go outside for food and
health reasons
 Maintain 2 meters (6ft) distance between
yourself and anyone who is coughing or
sneezing
 Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose
regularly and thoroughly clean your hands
with an alcohol based hand rub or wash
them with soap and water for at least 20
seconds, especially after going to the bath-
room; before eating; and after blowing your
nose, coughing, or sneezing
 After washing hands, the preferred strat-
egy is to dry them with a paper towel; alter-
natively, a towel can be used but should be
washed and disinfected daily
 Clean and disinfect frequently touched sur-
faces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs,
light switches, countertops, handles, desks,

ment has not yet realised the extent of the eco-
nomic misery that is being caused by the lock-
down. Government needs to spend about 4%-5%
of GDP if not like 10% of GDP by U.S. It means
India needs to give another package of rough-
ly 70 lac crores to the poor and marginalised-
sections
 Spending at least 5% of GDP means heavy pres-
sure on fiscal deficits. Government needs to
suspend fiscal limits, for now especially for
states for one year, who are really at the front-
line working directly with the people. For India,
one silver lining is the sharp drop in global oil
and gas prices with positive effects on the cur-
rent account deficit
 India needs to break away the shackles of past
and go for a monetary financing. With low de-
mand the danger of inflation can be arrested
for some period provided supply starts to come

of food grain stocks free to poor. In fact India
needs to give it free to everyone at least for next

are being forwarded by self-styled experts that may

of the people who are not in a position to eat; who do not
have a home to sleep in. Let’s pledge to help the people
in this pandemic. Let’s be sensitive to the woes of the
people who are more vulnerable to this pandemic, who
do not have money to buy medicine.
The government stresses about the precautions that
people should stay indoors in order to stave off them-
selves against the virus. The medical advisories are
being published day in and day out. This is done with
extreme emphasis and force, because staying indoors
and thereby maintaining a social distance is the only
measure to contain this virus.
On the order and advice of the government, people
have self- quarantined themselves in their cozy and
comfortable homes. The question that needs to be ad-
dressed at this critical juncture is: how are the homeless
people coping with this problem? The homeless people
sleep alfresco. Where would they quarantine themselves?
The answer to this serious question is: nowhere! We
should build hospices for them so that they can have a
place where they can live in. Plaster or bandage solution
to any problem won’t do. How would they buy face- masks
and hand-sanitizers, when they do not have the victuals

tiviral agent or biologic to treat the infected and,

lmighty Allah has created every bit or com-
ponent of nature whether living or non-
living as a marvellous design in itself based
on FFF (Fit of Form and Function). How-
ever, nothing is immune to change but living organ-
isms are corrected or altered during their life time
by the process of a genetic mechanism called as natu-
ral selection- a divine powerful action that puts every
form of life at the platform of an evolutionary game.
It is basically a means to engineer the biological
molecules, cells, tissues, systems, individuals, popu-
lations and finally species either for extermination
or for a better survival, ecosystem homeostasis and
for overall biological harmony on earth.
Viruses are no exception to it but are masters in
this natural phenomenon by continuously shifting
from one genetic form to other (known as strains) and
emerging as novel strains of human and animal infec-
tion every time they choose to change (biological
mutation).

t a time when the whole world is grappling
with Covid-19 pandemic and people are
confined to their homes, it is worthwhile
to mention that all the worldly gains at this
point are of no value. What still matters, is the concern
we have about our dear ones whom we had taken for
granted at some point of time but now we have again
shifted our attention back to them.
With the ever evolving social setup, we have come
to a point, where the essence of relationship has lost
its meaning. We have inadvertently entered in such
a phase where the basic understanding of relation-
ships is becoming a casualty.
To say we all are living together but there are sepa-

Knowing the fact of costly and difficult processes
involved with drug development, this current out-
break of COVID-19 further highlights the importance
of broad-spectrum antiviral drug development. One
antiviral-drug candidate is a combination of Lopi-
navir and Ritonavir (HIV protease inhibitors), which
is widely used against HIV and Hepatitis C. What
makes lopinavir-ritonavir attractive is that it is
widely available and manufacturable and that it
could be prescribed immediately. There are several
case reports and case series where this agent is being
used against COVID-19.
One of the reputed journals, ‘Nature’ has reported
its use in earlier days of the COVID-19 outbreak,
where doctors treated patients with combined ther-
apy of α-interferon and drug Kaletra (a mixture of
ritonavir and lopinavir).
In other clinical trials Kaletra is being used to-
gether with combinations of interferons, guanosine-
analog RNA synthesis inhibitors like ribavirin,
reverse transcriptase inhibitors and influenza drugs,
such as Arbidol, and oseltamivir. Unfortunately, one
paper in the New England Journal of Medicine re-
ported the use of Kaletra ineffective as a potential
option for coronavirus. Other protease inhibitors
on target include Bromohexine, Darunavir, and
Camostat mesylate.
Being acquainted with the previous Ebola outbreak
been an enormous dent to the global health care set-
up.
The economic sector is facing the worst case sce-
nario. The United Nations has expressed concern that
the poor people will suffer the most under the eco-
nomic crisis. About billion people or 36% of the world's
population, lives in extreme poverty.These poor
people mostly live on what they earn on a day.With
no work to earn their meals in the current situation,
the poor daily earning hands are facing a mortal
threat due to looming starvation following the loss of
livelihood.
Although it is commendable that the G20 countries
have come forward to support the falling economy, it
remains to be seen how well the governments tackle
the situation and support the poor sections of society
in this hour of crisis. The effectiveness of all the pro-
poor measures will depend on how well they are imple-
mented on ground.
Related to the impact of Covid-19 on the economic
sector is its impact on the social sector. Undeniably,
the pandemic has disrupted social life and added to
the woes and miseries of people.
With economic, cultural and education related ac-
tivities suspended for avoiding the people-people
transmission of the coronavirus, normal life has come
to standstill. In this dismal scenario, most people
have found no option but to postpone the marriages,
construction works, trips and tours.
My this column is aimed at to make understand the
role of natural selection in the emergence of Covid-19
pandemic and other related or similar past biological
catastrophes by coronaviruses, which constitute a
large family of RNA viruses naturally found in birds
and mammals (including human) and cause basal
level respiratory and intestinal illnesses in them.
Looking at the literature, I came to know that they
were first discovered during 1930’s and 40’s in birds
(chicken) and mammals (mice), and later in 1960 first
strain of human coronavirus was discovered but not
of epidemic or pandemic nature.
Since then, human coronavirus strains have been
known to cause mild respiratory symptoms mainly
during winter months resembling flu or influenza
(caused by human influenza viruses) or common cold
(generally seasonal caused by rhinoviruses). One of
the studies on coronaviruses shows that one in five
common colds in human is due to coronaviruses.
So they have become part of the co-evolutionary
process with the existence of human populations.
Another dimension of corona world is that bovine
coronaviruses (present in cattle) having diverged
from a common corona ancestor in 1899 are now fre-
quently encountered in cattle worldwide, and prob-
ability of future outbreaks is open due to tremendous
rations in this togetherness!! What is predominant

significance with the time. It is a wonder to see how
human behavior and priorities have changed just to
add complexity in the relationships. Whatever form
they may be in, relationships are the basis which hold
us together. They induce the spirit of contentment in
our lives by their fruitful association. They add value
to our lives and justify our existence. They make our
life beautiful with pleasant experiences.
Looking at the present day societies, one only gets
a gloomy representation of how the relationships have
succumbed to the illusions of the time. No one seems

Europe, and Japan received doses of Remdesivir and
in the U.S this drug has shown first successful results
in a COVID-19 patient which can be a promise in
other ailing subjects.
Since the peril of this pandemic, scientists are
targeting an array of pharmaceutical preparations,
as clearly exemplified by the use of antimalarial
drugs like Hydroxychloroquine/Chloroquine. Chlo-
roquine is one of the oldest remedy options for ma-
laria patients and also used for autoimmune dis-
eases like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
Recently, broad-spectrum antiviral and anti-in-
flammatory properties of chloroquine were explored.
Its distribution is wide in the whole body, including
lung, after oral administration. China, claimed the
use of Chloroquine in combination with Remdesivir,
effective in treating coronavirus disease but some
studies revealed its toxicity in certain patients. India
banned its export on 25 March but on 5th April Don-
ald Trump requested PM Modi to release Hydroxy-
chloroquine because the Trump administration has
made Hydroxychloroquine as part of its Strategic
National Stockpile.
There are news reports of job loss in many private
sectors. That will increase the number of unemployed
people and make deep inroads into their family life.
This is not a healthy development in any case and at
the same time can prove detrimental for married
people as well. Divorce and suicidal rates can go up.
Similarly,the crime rate can increase and the of-
fences like theft, burglary, robbery and loot are like-
ly to become a common trend.
Apart from affecting socio-economic sectors, Co-
vid-19 will sink teeth into the political set-up as well.
The political impact will be a major concern in un-
derdeveloped nations while the political institutions
of the developed nations are robust enough to cope
with the consequences of the pandemic on them suc-
cessfully.
Although political leaders are usually insulated
from major health scares by their wealth and access
to private health care, the novel coronavirus has al-
ready afflicted leaders across the globe. Leaders in
America, Italy, UK, Australia and Canada have test-
ed positive for the virus.
Speaking of the political institutions of the poor or
weaker nations, the consequences will be very differ-
ent. In these countries, the illness or death of a lead-
er is likely to generate a power vacuum, providing an
inspiration to the rival leaders, opposition leaders or
military to chance their arms with a power grab. Such
a situation can particularly arise in countries like

genomic features with efficient penetration in human

relations is worth introspection. We all are living
more in the virtual sphere around us which benefits
none but puts all of us in the risk of losing our loved
ones by creating a void amongst ourselves. We are

no good irrespective of how successful they are in
accumulating wealth, which too turns out to be of no

Manufacturing firms want partial lift on
Covid-19 lockdown to reduce losses
New Delhi, April 10: They
are companies that operate
from two leading industrial
hubs but in completely
different sectors — Tirupur
in textiles, while Chakan,
near Pune, in autos, with big
names like Bajaj, Volkswagen
group, Daimler and Mahindra
& Mahindra operating there.
Despite the difference in
businesses they have a
common demand to the state
government — permit them
to open their factories even
if in phases so that they don’t
lose huge money.
In the country’s textile hub
of Tirupur, garment exporters
are worried they might loose
over Rs 25,000 crore worth of
orders, putting them in serious
trouble. They are required
to send sample products to
their customers in Europe
and US in April and May. On
the basis of samples, they get
firm orders for next summer
and winter. If they don’t, these
orders will be grabbed by
China and Bangladesh, which
have their factories rolling.
Raja M Shanmugam,
president of Tirupur
Exporters’ Association, said:
“Companies have said they
will be able to manufacture
the samples even with 10 per
cent of the workforce. If they
don’t ship this month, next
month orders will go to China,
which has already started
manufacturing, and
Bangladesh, which partially
started production last
Sunday.”
Most of the exporters have
the required manpower and
had sourced the raw material
before the lockdown. All they
need now is permission to
produce the samples after
putting in place all health and
safety measures in place.
Aware of the challenge faced
by exporters in Tirupur, the
ministry of textiles has asked
the Apparel Export Promotion
Council (AEPC) to ascertain
details of companies having
residential, hostel, or
dormitory facilities, where
workers can stay on campus
24x7 and do their work while
maintaining social distancing.
They have been assured that
a decision on permission to
partially open will be
dependent on this exercise.
In Chakan, it is the big boys
who are pushing for a partial
lift of lockdown. Bajaj Auto,
which exports half its two-
wheelers, for instance, has
requestedthestategovernment
to allow them to produce only
