System infrastructure
Infrastructure is the foundation or framework that supports a system or organization. In
computing, information technology infrastructure is composed of physical and virtual resources
that support the flow, storage, processing and analysis of data. Infrastructure may be centralized
within a data center, or it may be decentralized and spread across several data centers that are
either controlled by the organization or by a third party, such as a colocation facility or cloud
provider.

Components of system infrastructure

10 | P a g e
Data center infrastructure often includes the power, cooling and building elements necessary to
support data center hardware. The data center hardware infrastructure usually involves servers;
storage subsystems; networking devices, like switches, routers and physical cabling; and
dedicated network appliances, such as network firewalls.

A data center infrastructure also requires careful consideration of IT infrastructure security. This
can include physical security for the building, such as electronic key entry, constant video and
human surveillance of the premises, carefully controlled access to the server and storage spaces,
and so on. This ensures only authorized personnel can access the data center hardware
infrastructure and reduces the potential for malicious damage or data theft.

11 | P a g e
Outside of the data center is an internet infrastructure, which includes transmission media, such
as fiber optic cables, satellites, microwave -- line of sight -- antennas, routers, aggregators,
repeaters, load balancers and other network components that control transmission paths. Internet
infrastructures are designed, built and operated by internet service providers (ISPs), such as
Verizon and AT&T. When a business engages an ISP for internet access, the ISP typically ties
into the data center infrastructure within a dedicated and secured building space.

The role of cloud computing is changing the way infrastructures are designed and implemented.
Where traditional, business-owned data centers are private, capital-intensive resources, cloud
computing enables organizations to access a cloud provider's data center infrastructure and
services for a fee. This infrastructure-as-a-service (IAAS) model allows flexible computing on
demand. Users can invoke a cloud provider's compute, storage and services without the need to
deploy those resources locally -- and adjust cloud infrastructure usage as workload needs change.

The software-as-a-service (SAAS) model offers similar benefits for specific workloads. A third-

party provider hosts hardware, software, servers, storage and other infrastructure components,
and it allows users to access the provider's hosted workloads instead of deploying and
maintaining those workloads locally. For example, users can employ SAAS workloads for
databases, HR applications, analytical applications, office productivity suites and many others.

Dimension of information system infrastructure

According to Star and Ruhleder, there are 8 dimensions of information infrastructures.

1. Embeddedness
2. Transparency
3. Reach or scope
4. Learned as part of membership
5. Links with conventions of practice
6. Embodiment of standards
7. Built on an installed base
8. Becomes visible upon breakdown

How infrastructure was created

12 | P a g e
Our organization has a traditional information infrastructure that follow a formalized process that
starts by analyzing and accessing business goals, making architectural and design decisions,
building and implementing the design, and then optimizing and maintaining the infrastructure.
The process usually involves detailed expertise, including data center building design, subsystem
and component selection, and quality construction techniques.

However, the way IT infrastructures are created is continually changing. Traditional

heterogeneous infrastructure development is a highly manual process that requires enormous
integration, optimization and systems management efforts -- especially when integrating servers,
storage, network and other components from diverse vendors.

Today, some vendors provide pre integrated and pre optimized collections of compute, storage
and network equipment that optimize the IT hardware and virtualization platform into a single
system that can be deployed, expanded and managed easily. This modular approach is
called converged infrastructure (CI). This notion has advanced into single-vendor systems that
offer even tighter integration and management over compute, storage, network and virtualization.
This advanced approach is called hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI).

Infrastructure management
Regardless of how it is created, an IT infrastructure must provide a suitable platform for all the
necessary IT applications and functions an organization or individual requires. This means the
design and implementation of any IT infrastructure must also support efficient infrastructure
management. Software tools must allow IT administrators to view the infrastructure as a single
entity, as well as access and configure granular operating details of any device in the
infrastructure. This single-pane-of-glass objective results in more effective and efficient
infrastructure management. Solid management also allows admin to optimize resources for
different workloads, and to more readily understand and handle the impact of any changes on
interrelated resources.

13 | P a g e
Infrastructure management is often divided into multiple categories. For example, a building
management system (BMS) provides the tools that report on data center facilities parameters,
including power usage and efficiency, temperature and cooling operation, and physical security
activities. Systems management includes the wide range of tool sets an IT team uses to configure
and manage servers, storage and network devices. Increasingly, systems management tools are
extending to support remote data centers, along with private and public cloud resources.
Management tools are also making extensive use of automation and orchestration to improve
efficiency, reduce errors and comply with established best practices or business objectives.

14 | P a g e
CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE

Cloud infrastructure refers to the hardware and software components -- such as servers, storage,

a network and virtualization software -- that are needed to support the computing requirements of
a cloud computing model.

Cloud infrastructure also includes an abstraction layer that virtualizes resources and logically
presents them to users through application program interfaces and API-enabled command-
line or graphical interfaces.

In cloud computing, these virtualized resources are hosted by a service provider or IT department
and are delivered to users over a network or the internet. These resources include virtual
machines and components, such as servers, memory, network switches, firewalls, load balancers
and storage.

Cloud infrastructure components

In a cloud computing architecture, cloud infrastructure refers to the back-end components -- the
hardware elements found within most enterprise data centers. These include multi
socket, multicore servers, persistent storage and local area network equipment, such
as switches and routers -- but on much greater scale.

Major public cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Google Cloud Platform,

offer services based on shared, multi-tenant servers. This model requires massive compute
capacity to handle both unpredictable changes in user demand and to optimally balance demand
across fewer servers. As a result, cloud infrastructure typically consists of high-density systems
with shared power.

Additionally, unlike most traditional data center infrastructures, cloud infrastructure typically
uses locally attached storage, both solid-state drives (SSDs) and hard disk drive (HDDs), instead
of shared disk arrays on a storage area network. The disks in each system are aggregated using
a distributed file system designed for a particular storage scenario, such as object, big
data or block. Decoupling the storage control and management from the physical implementation

15 | P a g e
via a distributed file system simplifies scaling. It also helps cloud providers match capacity to
users' workloads by incrementally adding compute nodes with the requisite number and type of
local disks, rather than in large amounts via a large storage chassis.

Cloud infrastructure as a service

While cloud infrastructure is the hardware and software components required for cloud
computing, infrastructure as a service (IAAS) is a cloud model that gives organizations the
ability to rent those IT infrastructure components -- including compute, storage and networking
-- over the internet from a public cloud provider. This public cloud service model is often
referred to as IAAS.

16 | P a g e
IAAS eliminates the upfront capital costs associated with on-premises infrastructure, and instead
follows a usage-based consumption model. In this pay-per-usage model, users only pay for the
infrastructure services consumed, generally on an hourly, weekly or monthly basis.

Cloud providers typically price IAAS on a metered basis, with rates corresponding to usage at a
given level of performance. For virtual servers, this means different prices for various server
sizes, typically measured as an increment of a standard virtual CPU size and corresponding
memory. For storage, pricing is typically based on the type of storage service, such as object or
block, performance level (SSD or HDD) and availability -- a single storage location or
replication across multiple geographic regions. Capacity is measured by usage per unit time --
typically per month.

IAAS vendors also provide discounts for sustained usage, or the use of a consistent level of
compute capacity for a specified amount of time, or reserved capacity, where users can prepay
for a guaranteed level of capacity for a month, year or multiple years.

IAAS vendors include AWS, Google, Microsoft Azure and IBM.

Information System Security

This massive increase in the uptake of e-commerce has led to a new generation of associated
security threats, but any e-commerce system must meet four integral requirements:

 Malicious Attack – Worms can cause a great deal of damage–often they are used to
“jam” communication channels by means of a DoS attack. A worm is capable of
spreading worldwide, via the Internet, in minutes. Trojan: A Trojan is a malware program
that, unlike viruses or worms, cannot copy itself and infect files.

 Data leakage– The unauthorized transfer of classified information from a computer or

datacenter to the outside world. Data leakage can be accomplished by simply mentally
remembering what was seen, by physical removal of tapes, disks and reports or by subtle
means such as data hiding.

 Fraud- Nowadays online fraud is increasing very fast. This sort of act may result in
direct financial loss. Frauds must be transferred from one account to another, or financial
records of the business might simply be destroyed.

Identified two risks that will cause severe damage and security
management which can prevent or manage those risks
