FLASHCARD GAMES:

SEQUENCE ( 1-4 people) -

Goal of the game:​ Bank as many cards as possible by avoiding Thief Cards and
saying the Chinese words out loud
1) Designate 3-5 cards to be the THIEF CARDS. This means that if you ever are
dealt one of these cards, you lose any cards that you have not BANKED.
2) Write the Chinese on paper for the 3-5 cards that you have chosen as the
THIEF CARDS
3) SHUFFLE ALL cards, place them in a PILE facing down, and have one
person DEAL
4) DEAL to the person to the left. That person must say the word aloud and try
to make a sentence with it.
5) IF the card is NOT A THIEF CARD, that player has a choice
a) BANK - Say “bank” and store the card away. It cannot be lost because it
is now in the bank.
b) RISK - Say “risk” and get dealt another card. Continue to do this for as
many cards as you like to try and build up more points, BUT………..
6) IF you are dealt a THIEF CARD, you LOSE any cards that you have NOT
BANKED. Those cards get returned to the deck. You may reshuffle as
needed.
CHARADES (2-4 people)
Goal of the game: ​Act out the meaning of words so that your partner can guess the
Chinese correctly
1) Put the cards face down.
2) Set a timer for 2 minutes.
3) One player takes a card and acts out the meaning.
4) Other player (s) guess the Chinese word
5) See how many you can guess correctly in 2 minutes.
6) Switch roles. If the student is acting, you should be saying the Chinese word
while you are acting it out. Mom, dad or caregiver who doesn’t speak Chinese
may guess in English.
SENTENCE MOUNTAINS (1 person)
Goal of the game: ​Use as many words as possible in the creation of a sentence
pyramid.
What is a sentence mountains?
A series of connected words placed in order to create as many word combinations
as possible.
Example:​ Let’s say your set of words includes the following:
I, have, want, look, dog, cat, pizza, house, you, eat, smile, this, happy
Sentence mountain example using those words:
1) Lay out a subject to begin the sentence.
2) Stagger the cards as you build the sentence possibilities.
3) Say each possible sentence aloud in Chinese and tally your total points.
4) 1 point per sentence.
5) In total, this “sentence mountain” earns 6 points because there are 6 sentences.
