Case Study #3 — Instructional Technology Plans

According to EducationTechnology.net, instructional technology is “the branch of

education concerned with the scientific study of instructional design and development [and] the

main purpose of instructional designers is to create engaging, effective learning experiences.”

Basically, an instructional technology plan is a document that provides guidelines for teachers

and schools to ensure that students are effectively building their technological skills. The target

audience for an instructional technology plan is the students who are being taught the

information.

For the classroom, teachers create instructional plans which outline ways to teach students

different things, including activities and resources. In my Math for Instruction class, we recently

had to create a math-related instructional plan. The main sections of the plan were the grade

level, the concept area, the standards, the mathematical practices, prior knowledge, knowledge

progression, resources being used, and lesson structure, which included things such as guided

and independent practice, reflections, and assessments. An instructional technology plan—or any

instructional plan in general—should be written because, according to Education.gov, “Planning

for the classroom is an important part of educating and behavior management. Proper classroom

planning will keep you organized and on track while teaching, thus allowing you to teach more

and manage less.”

Teachers must teach sets of information to groups of children that all have their own

learning styles. Jonra Springs writes on TheClassroom.com, “The teacher is typically assigned a

curriculum guide containing the set of information the class is expected to learn.” From this,

teachers must create lesson plans focusing on different learning styles, which resources to use,

and how to assess the students.

The basic sections that are included in an instructional technology plan are (1) the district

LEA information, (2) the vision and goals of the instructional technology plan, (3) an action

plan, (4) technology and infrastructure inventory, (5) curriculum and instruction, (6) technology

investment plan, (7) status of technology, (8) implementation, and (9) evaluation.

Section 1, the district LEA information, contains things such as the number of students

enrolled in the district, and the name and title of the district administrator. Section 2, the vision

and goals of the instructional technology plan, contains things such as the district’s mission

statement and the planning process for the instructional technology plan. Section 3, an action

plan, mentions things such as the target audience for the plan. Section 4, technology and

infrastructure inventory, contains things like internet provider information and how many

students with disabilities are provided with assistive technology. Section 5, curriculum and

instruction, mentions the district’s plans for using technology to improve teaching and learning.

Section 6, technology investment plan, mentions the technology investment planned for the next

5 or so years. Section 7, status of technology, talks about any developments there may have been

since the last instructional technology plan and how the district plans to increase students and

teachers access to technology. Section 8, implementation, mentions the timeline and major

milestones for implementation and an action plan to integrate technology into the curriculum to
improve student learning. Section 9, evaluation, contains the strategies that the district will use to

evaluate the effectiveness of the instructional technology plan.
