Sound
Fill in the blanks with the words given below.
Vibration medium Longitudinal closer Vibration Energy
1500 Parallel 5000 m/s vacuum close 330

1. Describe how sound is transmitted.

Sound is a form of Energy that is transferred from one point to another by the
Parallel particles. As sound is a Longitudinal wave, the direction of medium of the
particles is parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave.

2.
As sound is propagated by the vibration of particles, sound requires a medium to
travel. Unlike light, sound cannot travel in vacuum.

3. The speed of sound is dependent on the medium it travels in. The closer the atoms in
the medium, the faster the sound.

Speed of sound in air is 330 m/s while speed of sound in water is approximately 1500
m/s. As the particles in a metal are very close, the speed of sound in metals is
approximately 5000 m/s.

5. State the definition to the term echo.

a sound or sounds caused by the reflection of sound waves from a surface back to the
listener.

6. State a use of ultrasound.

Doctors uses ultrasound to study a developing fetus (unborn baby)

7. What is the pitch of a sound wave related to?

A high pitch sound corresponds to a high frequency sound wave and a low pitch
sound corresponds to a low frequency sound wave

8. What is the loudness of a sound wave related to?

A larger amplitude means a louder sound, and a smaller amplitude means a
softer sound.
9. Name the type of sound waves?

Transverse waves

10.A ship’s echo sounder transmits a pulse of sound. It is then reflected to the ship
by a shoal of fish to a receiver 0.2 s later. If the shoal of fish is 120 cm below the
ship, what is the speed of the sound in water?

120x2 =1200 m/s

0.2

9. State two use of sound waves.

Ultrasound waves are used widely in medicine.
Bats also use sound waves for navigation.

10. Explain how sound waves are transmitted.

Sound is transmitted through the air as sound waves from the environment.

11. Explain why it is not possible for the sound to be transmitted in a vacuum.

Sound can't be carried in the empty vacuum of space because sound waves need a

medium to vibrate through such as air or water.

12. State one use of echoes

echo uses sound waves to create pictures of your heart's chambers

13. Explain the meaning when a person is said to have a high-pitched voice.
if a man has a high-pitched voice, it's probably partly due to his genetics,
although he's probably got tense vocal chords too.

14. State the difference between pitch and loudness.

The pitch of a sound depends on the frequency while loudness of a sound depends
on the amplitude of sound waves.
