Protection Application Example

380 kV OHL

If the Zone 2 reach is set to 80% of the total impedance up to the zone 1 reach
on Line 3 (shortest adjacent line) then the total positive sequence impedance at
the Zone 2 reach limit is:

( X 2 − X Line1 )
R 21 = RLine1 + ⋅ RLine 3
X Line 3
X 21 = 0.8 ⋅ ( X Line1 + 0.8 ⋅ X Line 3 )
24.64 − 80 ⋅ 0.21
X 21 = 0.8 ⋅ (80 ⋅ 0.21 + 0.8 ⋅ 17.5) R 21 = 80 ⋅ 0.025 + ⋅ 1.5
17.5
X 21 = 24.64
R 21 = 2.672

The corresponding zero sequence impedance is calculated as follows:

( X 2 − X Line1 ) ( X 2 − X Line1 )
X 2 0 = X 0 Line1 + ⋅ X 0 Line 3 R 2 0 = R 0 Line1 + ⋅ R0 Line 3
X Line 3 X Line 3
24.64 − 80 ⋅ 0.21 24.64 − 80 ⋅ 0.21
X 2 0 = 80 ⋅ 0.81 + ⋅ 86.5 R 2 0 = 80 ⋅ 0.13 + ⋅ 7.5
17.5 17.5
X 2 0 = 103.4 R 2 0 = 13.76

This is graphically shown for the X values in Figure 12. A similar drawing can
also be made for the R values. Always use the zone 2 setting in the X direction
as a reference. Now apply the derived values, X21, R21, X20 and R20 to the
following equation:

R E 1  R0 
= ⋅  − 1
RL 3  R1 
RE 1  13.76 
= ⋅ − 1
RL 3  2.672 
RE
= 1.38
RL

Apply setting RE/RL for Z1b..Z5 equal to 1.38

1119 Zero seq. comp. factor XE/XL for Z1B…Z5: This is the XE/XL setting
corresponding to the RE/RL setting 1118 above. Therefore apply the derived
values, X21, R21, X20 and R20 to the following equation:

XE 1  X0 
= ⋅  − 1
X L 3  X1 
X E 1  103.4 
= ⋅ − 1
X L 3  24.64 
XE
= 1.07
XL
