Army’s “Pamaskong Handog” brings joy to Dabaweños

The 10th Infantry Division, Philippine Army on Sunday morning, December 19,
2010 brought fun, foods and gifts to the residents of Barangay Salvacion, Mawab,
Compostela Valley Province.

Lt. Col. Romeo Cabanalan, Acting CMO officer of the 10th Infantry Division led
the soldiers belonging to the Division Headquarters, 66 th Infantry Battalion and the 72nd
Infantry Battalion providing various services to the people of Mawab which include
entertainment, parlor games, food distribution, gift-giving, free haircut and shoe-repair.
The event started at 8:00 o’clock in the morning with parlor games given to the delight
of hundreds of 3 to 6 year old children. It was followed by musical numbers rendered by
the 10th Infantry Division combo. Children’s favorite “Jollibee” mascot also showed its
dancing prowess and gamely joined the 10ID marching band in its exhilarating
performance.

Barangay Chair Joseph Arvin Garillos was very appreciative of the special event
hosted by the Philippine Army in his barangay. He said, “Karon lang gyud nahitabo ang
ingon aning programa dinhi sa among barangay ug nalipay gyud ang mga tawo sa mga
pagkain ug regalo nga gipanghatag sa mga sundalo” (This is the first time that an
activity like this was conducted in our barangay and our people are very happy to
receive the food and gift items given by the soldiers).

The 72nd Infantry Battalion under Lt. Col. Lyndon Paniza also had their gift-giving
activity yesterday at the New Cathedral Church in Tagum City. The program, which was
implemented in partnership with the Kiwanis Club International, Tagum Chapter,
benefited 150 indigent children of the “Ginagmay na Kristuhanong Katilingban” (GKK)
Chapter of the New Cathedral Church.

Other Army units in Davao Region also implemented their activities in support to
the “Pamaskong Handog” program. The 1003rd Infantry Brigade under Colonel
Lysander Suerte was the first to come with a gift-giving program in Sto. Tomas, Davao
del Norte. Task Force Davao under Colonel Rey Leonardo Guerrero collected and
distributed food packages to indigenous people and Muslim communities through its
“Pinaskuhan sa Lumad” program. The 69th Infantry Battalion under Lt. Col. Aniano
Orap-Orap and the 84th Infantry Battalion under Lt. Col. Gabriel Viray supported the
“Pinaskuhan” program by doing the actual distribution of the gift packages to the lumads
in their respective area of responsibility. The 1001 st Infantry Brigade under Colonel
Roberto Domines held their Christmas Party with the poor indigents of Maco,
Compostela Valley Province. In partnership with the local government unit of Sta. Cruz,
Davao del Sur, the 39th Infantry Battalion led by Lt. Col. Oliver Artuz celebrated
Christmas by giving gift items to the residents of Barangay Zone 1 of said municipality.

These activities were implemented as part of the 10ID’s peace and development
outreach program. Lt. Col. Cabanalan, in his message, said “Through this simple
program our people will appreciate the way soldiers celebrate Christmas away from
home.”
