So what does being a good corporate citizen actually mean? There are many ways that
companies can show that they are good corporate citizens but the common thread is as follows:

Corporate citizenship recognizes that businesses have a responsibility to respect the individuals,
the community and the environment in a way that when devising or implementing any rightful
business strategy they will abide by laws and regulations, and adhere to high ethical standards.

Individual citizens also have responsibilities and rights. Together with corporate citizens these
entail a set of social values that provide a benchmark upon which they can perform their
respective roles in harmony with the wider community, for mutual benefit.

1.Ê Ôaintaining a high standard of business ethics

2.Ê Working as part of the community;
3.Ê Protecting the environment;
4.Ê Providing good corporate governance;
5.Ê Engaging in fair trade and business practices, as well as fair workplace relations.

It is believed that when businesses apply high standards of service, thereby instilling consumer
confidence in their products and services, they ensure that not only will the business succeed in
its endeavors, but also that the community as a whole will benefit from the positive effect this
has on maintaining dynamism in the economy.

For example Google, provides some form of equity in the company to all its regular employees,
and encourages its engineers to devote 20 percent of their working hours to independent projects.
Ôicrosoft, of Redmond , Wash. , gains kudos for bridging the ³digital divide´ between
technology haves and have-nots around the world, for accommodating disabled workers, and for
providing restricted stock options to most employees.

^+% , It is a prerequisite that all corporate entities provide

a satisfactory procedure for governance of their corporate affairs. This governance should be
adequate enough to ensure that all their affairs are legally and morally above board. In this day
and age even extremely large corporations can crumble and fall due to becoming embroiled in
scandals. Just take Enron or Hollinger International as examples. Both very big corporations that
fell to the ground and are now non existent. Dnd let¶s not forget about powerful people too, like
Ôartha Stewart. We all know what happened to her and I¶m sure you would rather not spend
some time in jail because of less than honest investing.

    + One of
the most important factors in maintaining any business is being fair and equitable to your
customers and your employees.

If possible have in place systems and measures that will ensure adequate feedback between the
managers of the company and their employees/customers. By doing this you will have a record
of the current ³health´ of your company which will help you to make any of the adjustments
required to ensure that your employees and customers feel fairly treated.

Dnd as we seen from the previous article it seems that the statistics prove that companies who
are known to be good corporate citizens and treat their employees well also have a healthier
bottom line.

Once upon a time, the corporate heads of many organizations had one concern: ³How much
money can we make and how fast can we make it?´ Well, money still matters, of course. But
today¶s employers are finding that they have to care about more than just profits if they want to
keep their employees happy. The environment, health, and safety have never been more in the
spotlight, and as a result, employees want to work for companies who take these factors into
consideration.

Global warming is the effects on the global climate due to humans putting excessive amounts of
green house gases, primarily CO2, into the atmosphere. The green house gases trap heat and the
planet gets hotter and hotter. This is called the Greenhouse Effect.

 "

For millions of years, the naturally occurring greenhouse effect has played a crucial role in
determining the Earth's climate. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane have
trapped the Sun's heat near the Earth's surface, helping to evaporate surface water into clouds,
which later return the water to Earth.

Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth's average temperature would be -18 degrees Celsius.
The Earth would be a lifeless frozen wasteland. Instead, the greenhouse effect raises the Earth's
average temperature by a full 33 degrees Celsius. Rain and the sun's warmth trapped by the
greenhouse effect allow plants to grow and soils to form, and sustain the diversity of life. Plants
and soils absorb carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air. For millions of years, a
complex mixture of biological and hydrological systems released just enough carbon dioxide to
maintain a fairly stable balance of these gases in the air.

OÊ If your workplace does not have an organized recycling program, encourage your
employer and fellow employees to start one. Organize one yourself by (a) establishing
conveniently located collection sites, (b) providing collection boxes or containers, (c)
informing and reminding co±workers of the sites, and (d) arranging for pick±ups by a
