JTC SAYS:

All the licks in this set use D Ionian (D E F# G A B C#) as the basic melodic framework, and
you’ll see how you can add interesting “flavour notes” without leaving the Ionian sound.
But to start with, we’re going the other way… removing notes to create a simpler melodic
palette. The first measure uses D major pentatonic (D E F# A B) and then Marcelo gradually
adds notes to build up to the full Ionian scale… a G in measure 2 and a C# in measure 3.

JTC SAYS:

The A/D chord is basically an A major triad (A C# E) over a D bass. You might expect this to
sound like an A chord, but it actually functions more as a Dmaj9 without a 3rd (F#). That’s
why the D note still sounds like the root when you use it in your solo lines. This lick uses the
full Ionian scale, but still with some intervals which suggest the major pentatonic from Lick 1.

Again, Marcelo starts by stripping the full scale down to the major pentatonic (D E F# A
B). There’s an F note (the minor 3rd) at the end of measure 1, adding a touch of “outside”
tension, and then we get a longer chromatic passage in measure 2. This sort of chromatic
idea is easy… just fill in the gaps between scale notes, making sure you land on the next
beat on a strong scale note.

Remember what we said about the A/D chord really functioning as a Dmaj9 without the
3rd? Check out the line in measure 1 – a great rippling Dmaj9 arpeggio (with the 3rd!) This
continues into the next measure, where Marcelo completes the pattern by bending that B
note up to C# (the major 7th) and then D (the root).

This lick starts with the same rippling arpeggio style, but using many different three- and
four-note shapes. Unlike the previous example, we have several B notes, adding the
sweeter sound typical of the 6th. Also notice how Marcelo often changes his approach for
the Bsus2 and Gsus2 chords in these licks, changing his target notes to fit the chords and
often using a slower melodic style.

This lick starts with a series of short phrases at different fretboard positions. When the D
chord enters in measure 2, we’re using D major pentatonic again, and notice how this fits so
well over the Bsus2 chord? That’s because D major pentatonic has exactly the same notes
as B minor pentatonic, so it’s a familiar sound!

The basic line here is pretty simple, but Marcelo decorates it with lots of quick grace-note
slides. You don’t have to use the same fingering as him, but it’s worth taking the time to plan

This lick starts in style, with a two-octave Dmaj9 arpeggio, followed by a Dmaj7 arpeggio,
which then descends through a D major arpeggio at the end of measure 2. The slower line

The opening phrase initially sounds pentatonic, but it’s a mixture of A major pentatonic (A
B C# E F#) and D major pentatonic (D E F# A B), both of which are found within the full D
Ionian (major) scale. In measures 3 and 4, Marcelo descends with a cool 4-note-per-string
pattern. Most of use will have to use three fingers and quick position shifts, but if you have
large hands you could try using all four fingers together!

JTC SAYS:

At the start, you’ll see a technique that Marcelo uses a few times in this package… playing a
note, and then repeating it with a grace-note slide from above or below. This is a great way
of adding variety to a simple melodic line. In measure two he slides into the C# note from
the C… this is a phrase you’d more commonly hear in the key of A major (it’s that bluesy
major/minor ambiguity) and it shows how that A/D chord can be interpreted in two different
ways. Is it an A chord with a different bass note, or is it a Dmaj9 with a missing 3rd?

Marcelo starts with a cool repeating pattern that moves up the fretboard. A new pattern
starts in the second half of measure 2, this time with a legato feel. Finally, the lick ends with

JTC SAYS:

This lick uses tapping to create wide-interval legato lines. Marcelo uses two fingers of his
picking hand to tap the high B and C# notes at the start. After the lick has descended to the
A string in measure 3, Marcelo then uses a quick string-skipping move to go back to the top
again… try to play precisely here, avoiding unwanted string noise.

Interesting note choices will only work up to a point; if you play all your licks with the same
rhythm patterns, no one will hear your interesting altered notes. You also have to make
the rhythm interesting! Here, we’re making a sudden switch to a triplet feel, and using very
wide intervals in measures 1 and 3. The wide-interval lines are based on Dmaj9 and Bm9
arpeggios.

More triplets and the jerky staccato feel adds rhythmic interest. Once again we have the
C-C# slide over the A/D chord, reminding us of this chord’s ambiguous sound. Marcelo uses
some great slide moves in measure 3… he plays the notes A-B four times, but moving across
three different strings, and using slides to change position smoothly.

Here’s another example of using interesting rhythmic patterns. Marcelo plays a pattern built
from a 16th-note sextuplet followed by a single 8th note, and then repeats it twice. The
pattern covers a beat and half, so it shifts across the pulse each time you repeat it.
