Sciences, JNU is bringing out a Placement Brochure for the year 2008-2009. The
Brochure provides information about the University in general, and the School of
Computer & Systems Sciences in particular.

It is a matter of great pride for the University in general and the School in particular,
that it is not only providing knowledge and training to the Students but also helping
them in brightening their future prospect and achieving their goals.

I understand that last year many multinational companies such as Accenture,

McKinsey, TCS, Aricent, Conexant, IBM, Sapient,

T he School of Computer & Systems Sciences offers two postgraduate courses- MCA and
M.Tech. and also has the Ph.D. Programme. The School admits about 60 students to the
masters programmes every year. The students in these programmes are among the best in the
country as they are selected from about a total of 9000 to 10000 applicants each year.

SC&SS not only offers courses to students in the fundamental areas of

computer science but also imparts education in emerging and new areas by
constantly evolving the syllabus. This means that the school equips its students
with high quality state of the art technical knowledge. The students are thus
trained to be capable of entering and competing in the global IT market.

Our students are also given opportunity to hone their managerial and team
building skills. This academic year they have successfully organized a national
level techfest TECHNOPHILIA which was highly appreciated by the
participants for punctuality and organization. They have also actively
participated in the management of the conference NCM2C 2007 organized by
the school.

About the University 3

he foundation of the university was laid by our former Prime Minister and Iron Lady Indira
Gandhi who came with the idea in 1966 and JNU was constituted under the JNU act in 1969. In
1969, the simulacrum of a dream university came in full-fledged action.
JNU is being cradled in the lap of Aravali range stretching its wings in more than 10000 acres of
geographical areas. It is situated 17 km away from the heart of Delhi. A university with a mission, an
unceasing quest, dedication has always been spreading its wings and has been acting as a
milestone from the very outset. It has been honored by the UGC as the university with potential for
excellence.
JNU is among the top five universities which have been recognized as 'Model University' &
UGC conferred the status of “University with Potential for Excellence' in Sep. 2001
JNU is not only one of the most prestigious universities in India but also in Asia. International
league tables produced in 2006 by The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES)

Almost every school is organized in a way to meet the basic instinct of academic, social and cultural
plank of students' life. Besides the central library every center provides the quotidian library facility to

storming session to take place. Research lab is reached out to every interested research scholar
according to their area of interest under the aegis of grand standing renowned faculties of school.

NU is one of the high profile universities which initiated the academic program in the realm of
computer science in late 1970's. To meet the demands of growing curiosity and to fulfill the need
of competent software professionals at home and abroad, our institution has been acting as a
beacon under its resolute load-star ever since its birth.
Students from the institution have always relished the challenging work whatever its nature may be,
through good moral fiber. Moral fiber of the students is molded by eminent professors of our
university, through intra-facilities and through seminars conducted regularly to update the day to day
development of the kaleidoscopic nature of information technology. The experienced faculties here
always provide the channel to get charge out of challenging work and also provide the chapter and
verse of the protean character of the technology through special intermittent lectures and by dove-
tailing with students. This interactive and cooperative aura and the method of education are flower of
techniques which have given an umpteen number of talented chartered software professionals, who
bring the laurel to our institution.
With so many institutions providing the same education in computer science, SC & SS advances over
others in alumni's thrall, who pay regular visit through seminars to inculcate and nurture the students
in order to the institution having to look its laurels from the very outset of program in computer science
and to have gumption of the latest technology. SC & SS has reigned supreme, constantly giving that
je ne sais quoi which distinguishes its professionals from other institutions.
Course curriculum of SC&SS is framed keeping the whole basic instinct of Computer Science, which
fuels and gears up the students' talent in entire field, even in Research and Development area. As
history says itself, the alumni working in
domestic and multi national companies
have got felicitations and reward for their
outstanding performance and have
outwitted and pre-empted professionals
from other institutions on several
occasions. The course structure is
updated regularly to fit with the present
demand of the technology.
The SC&SS, from the day of its existence,
designs and offers courses for the benefit
of its large family to promote
interdisciplinary studies in the university
also.
Programmes of Study 5

MCA

MCA Embryonic idea of MCA got birth in 1985. This three-year (six semester) programme
is designed to provide necessary theoretical background and practical experience
in Computer Science and Applications to meet the growing manpower
requirements in the IT sector. In the first five semesters the student undergoes
course work followed by a project in the sixth semester.
Mode of Selection: Students are selected through rigorous process of
examination, nearly 10,000 graduates compete neck to neck and among them
around 30 high brass candidates are selected from the country (to mention, a part of the strength
comes from across the globe also).

M.Tech

M.Tech The M.Tech programme began in 1985. This two year programme(four
semester) programme is designed to help students sharpen their
analytical and conceptual skills and develop methodological rigor in
dealing with real world problems. In the first two semesters the student
undergoes course work followed by dissertation work in the subsequent
third and fourth semester.
Mode of Selection: Students are selected after undergoing a rigorous written test and the interview.
The written test carries a weight age of 70%. Out of the thousands of candidates who appear, 60 to 70
candidates are finally called for an interview conducted by a panel of professors from which only 25
are finally selected. The success ratio is 1:300.

Ph.D. Ph. D
The school has major focus on research and offers integrated M.Tech./Ph.D.
programme and Direct Ph.D. programme. The school currently has more than 40
Ph.D. students enrolled for the programme. The broad areas where research is
going on are Databases, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence & Robotics,
Computer Graphics & Multimedia, Wireless & Mobile Communication , Parallel &
Distributed Computing, Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Natural Language Processing,
Soft Computing, Data Warehousing & Mining, System Software, System Modeling & Simulation,
Digital Image Processing, Scientific Computing, Optimization
Mode of Selection: M.Tech. students can continue to pursue Ph.D. Programme. The students for
the Direct Ph.D. programme are selected based on an interview by an expert panel of faculties of the
school.
Evaluation & Grading System 6

J NU follows a semester system. Each course is for the duration of one semester and is assigned
a specific number of credits. MCA is a six semester programme where a student has to secure
108 credits in all out of which 100 credits is for the course work and 8 credits for the sixth
semester project work. The course work is carried out in the first five semesters where each student is
required to study five courses (Compulsory & Elective) in each semester. Each course of MCA carries
4 credit points. On the other hand, M.Tech is a four semester programme where a student has to
secures 50 credits in all out of which atleast 30 credits shall be for course work, 5 credits for seminar
and 15 credits for the dissertation work. Each course of M.Tech carries 3 credit points.

The University follows a 10 point letter grading scale for evaluation of students academic
performance in the course during the semester. The grades in each course of the semester are used
to compute the Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA). The Cumulative Grade Point Average
(CGPA) is calculated for the student upto and including the semester for which it is required using the
SGPA. On completing the programme the student is assigned a Final Grade Point Average (FGPA)
denoting the final index of a student in the courses.

The objective of this system is to provide a measure of the student performance in each course. The
performance of the student is evaluated continuously throughout the semester. Besides the end

C&SS provides modern and sophisticated computing facilities for common use by students. It
maintains two general labs, one Linux lab and one Microprocessor lab. It has all the
paraphernalia to have the making of student to work miracle with cooperation of faculty
members.

It providers various platforms to work with and inheres in the taste of all manner of working element.

SC&SS provides one to one ratio of student to computer with 24 hours Internet access. The labs are
equipped with a Window server, a Web Server, a Linux Server, Macintosh Machines, Sun Solaris
Machines and around 80 Windows/Linux based systems. In addition 8085/8086 Microprocessor kits
are available. The Servers in the labs are connected to 100 Mbps LAN. The labs also have
scanners, network dot-matrix printer and network Laser printer in order to provide adequate scanning
and printing facilities to students.

The labs are also equipped with the latest softwares catering to the academic needs of the school.

The computing labs in the school continuously acquire hardware and software in order to keep itself
upto date with emerging technologies.

The labs provides an ambience for students to work in coordination to nurture team spirit and bring
out innovative ideas for developing applications.

owering above all academic complexes in university serene element, sitting on the
confluences of the premises of school building is our great and time-honored central library. Its
ground floor has a geographical spread of approx 50000 sq. ft. and the column of nine-storey
building has a floor stretching itself in 6000 sq. ft. The library is one of the largest repositories of books
in the country shelving 5 lakh books and more than 50000 volumes.

It is being given to adding 10000 books on an average per year through the agency of suggestions
from faculties and students from different disciplines. It keeps on replicating the volumes of books as
per requirements.

The library also subscribes around 1000 journals, the real Mc-coy, to quench the thirst of knowledge
of its contemporary research scholars from international and national arena. Besides fertilizing the
talents of university through physical study materials, it provides the virtual study material in the form
of floppy, CD-ROM of books and internet.

It is subscribing around 1000 serials and is in mailing list of nearly all leading Newspapers of the
world. The library is on the mailing list of all publications of Government of India and publications of
some very important International agencies like World Health Organization, UNESCO etc. It is also
subscribing documents of United Nations.

The library has an exchange relation with many Indian and International agencies and National
Libraries throughout the world. The library has its own Local Network connected with a strong server
with 48 terminals inside the library. On line Public Catalogue
of the Library has databases of Books, Serials and other
material. It is a member of Delhi Library Network and
INFLIBNET. The Library is a part of JNU Wide Area Network
and its databases can be accessed from all nodes of
Network.

The library acquires electronic collections mainly via

consortia. Library subscribes to online journals related to
computer science through INDEST Consortia like
Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) digital library.
The online digital library provides the complete collection of
IEEE and ACM journals, conference proceedings and
newsletter articles.

I n addition to the central library of Jawaharlal Nehru University, the school maintains its own library
to support research and teaching activities in the school. In the school library large amount of
information is kept systematically and made available for use.

The school library houses a collection of over thousand books, which have been acquired over the
years with a view to aid high quality and contemporary education in the area of computer science and
applications.

The school library also subscribes to a number of journals and magazines covering a wide range of
fields in computer science in order to keep the student and faculty up to date with the latest
advancements in the field of computer science.

The school library also houses collection of handbooks and manuals to assist researchers and
professionals with readily available facts and information. While most of these resources are found in
printed volumes in our stacks, they are also available on CDs and DVDs.

In order to share past academic efforts of the student, the school library maintains a collection of the
MCA project reports, M.Tech. dissertations and Ph.D. Thesis of students who have passed out of the
school

The collection in the school library continually grows through the acquisition of new resources to meet
the ever-evolving course curriculum and the needs of our students and faculties. The
school library supports the learning,
teaching, research and development
endeavors of the university by providing
appropriate materials and resources in
order to have a fruitful and enjoyable
library experience.

ts high time when flotilla of students career take a golden course into the vast ocean of
software, R & D, and academic field. As far as the placement is concerned, when the
whole world was struggling under the feet of parlous state of economy, we did maintain an
excellent graph of placement by our labour and smarts. Our seniors did maintain it by striking
the dirt and bagging palmary and toothsome package, by their stellar performance. The
alumni of the school have fared well in all kinds of organizations whether it is the system,
application, product or service based.

The Training and Placement Cell of SC&SS provides the opportunity to the students by
interacting with the industries at various platforms, whether it is on-job training, in-house
projects or final placements of the students.

In order to carry out placement activities in the school, a placement committee is constituted
which comprises of a faculty member, acting as a placement coordinator, and representative
from the student community of the school.

It is the devotion of the alumni in several organisations, the faculty members and the students
of the school that has brought SC&SS to this excellent position among equals.

E
very institution is, that is to say, silhouette of the outstanding performance of its students and its
Alumni. SC & SS today is grinning by unfolding the long annals of its Alumni performance. Our
Alumni have been working with grit on all cylinders to date, with their never tiring get-up and go on
every front. They have always been in command, even in hard weather of economy by their smarts and
hard work, and have been coming up roses.
Their dexterous maneuver has put a new complexion to institution. They have been never a bit away to
rack their brains and/or to say our Alumni have always relished the challenging work, to mention, under
reduced circumstances by making silk purse out of sow's ear. JNU SC & SS has a goliath alumni
association under the consanguinity of its Apron strings.
Its Alumni association is constellation of dashing professionals, academicians and entrepreneur from
among three streams, to state, MCA, M.Tech, and PhD with sum total, in the neighborhood of 800 of
eager beaver with rattling good countenance.
There comes one-off in a year, a great fete, Alumni Meet, EUDEMONIA. Its' a great occasion to
commune with our brethren, the common denominator of industry, academicians, entrepreneurs or
where ever they have spread their feathers, in the form of social-cultural conglomeration. Here's a

I n today's fast paced world, science and technology hold the key to the future. Science and technology not only
change our lives but rather they revolutionize it from the way we think to the way we live. Moreover, it is equally
well known that today's students are tomorrow's professionals and there is an indispensable need to foster their
ingenuity and imagination. Bringing together these two extremely potent forces is Technophilia - School of
Computer & Systems Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University's technology festival.

Technophilia 2008 is the second edition of the Technophilia. This fertile land of technology was cultivated by 32
teams from 23 reputed technical institutes and colleges like II T Roorkee, IIT Delhi, IIC, NSIT, Delhi University, Jamia
Hamdard, Jamia Milia Islamia.

Technophilia 2008 provided students a platform to come together and explore the realms of computer science and
technology. Technophilia gave these students a golden opportunity to not only learn but also showcase their talents.

We brought to students competitions that test their skills, extract their talent, promote their imagination, and not to
forget the fun and festive spirit of a college festival!!!.

The Events included some Programming Contests in C/C++ Language on Linux platform, Technical Quiz, Program
Debugging Challenge, Website Designing, Algorithm Design, Puzzle Contest and some exciting non technical events
including LAN gaming.

I t's a great occasion to take cue, beyond price, from the progenitors of respective field of research,
work etc. School organizes seminars at least once in a week, in order to have understanding of on
going research and new technology added to Computer Science, also new working methodology
adopted by industry.

School distills the thought, idea and information from go-getter of contemporary world i.e. we invite
scholars and researchers from the entire gamut of computer science. We ferret out information and
trade our idea & feeling with the man in show by batteries of questions. It's a process to season
academic chores with toothsome research and information.

Stirring seminar does act as to fashion the way of thinking and working of students of SC&SS, JNU.
It's a step to quench the thirst of happenings and to season academic session with latest
development and research in national & international arena of Computer Science. We lay the red-
carpet to scholars from different universities, national and international, industries in order to have
heartening effect on the fetish to have a world-beater. It's conducted in order to have its talent
equipollent with contemporary highly known institution meeting exacting & copasetic standard of
software field. We would like to enlist some lectures by scholars & industrial person, on different topic.

The National Conference on Methods and Model in Computing is second in the series organized by the School of Computer
and Systems Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The aim of this conference is to provide a platform to the
researchers from all the disciplines of computing especially from computer science and engineering for sharing their ideas
and stimulating thoughts.
The scope and theme of the conference have been made wide to bring researchers from various disciplines to a common
platform for enabling discussions and exploring new ideas on interdisciplinary research. However, based on the contents of
the papers and convenience of interaction the conference is organized in three broader themes, namely Software
Engineering and Databases, Soft Computing and Communication Networks and Distributed Systems.
The papers on Software Engineering and Databases not only cover Software Engineering and Databases discipline, but
accommodate the papers focusing on design and implementation Issues. Wide range of contents covered under this theme
includes component based approach, cohesion, software quality etc.
The papers contributing to the sections on soft computing not only present application of various Soft Computing
techniques for data analysis or mining what also cover a wide range of types of databases. The works on classical
techniques, such as Neural Networks, Genetic Algorithms, Simulated Annealing, Support Vector Machines etc. are
supplemented by applications of Fuzzy Logic and Rough Set Theory .
The papers on Communication Networks and Distributed Systems cover variety of related topics from area .This includes
Mobile Networks, QoSc Services issues Network Security ,Multimedia Applications etc, and on Distributed Systems it
covers task Scheduling ,Parallel Interconnection etc
NCM2C received number of papers from researchers across the country working in various disciplines . All the papers
reviewed by experts engaged in research in the related areas. Based on suggestion and comments received from the
reviewer twenty six paper were accepted for presentation and publishing in the proceedings. We hope the proceedings of
NCM2C 2007 will prove valuable reference for the readers engaged in research and academics.
