Technology

And Its Impact On Children

Having a child can be very stressful and hard to maintain. Every mom knows that being a

mom is not easy. For some people, having a child may be like living hell and for others it may be

a dream come true. Every parent should want the best for their child, so the main question

comes up. Should I give my child technology or should I wait till my child is older to start using

such advanced technology? The question can be answered simply. Children should not be

allowed to use advanced technology such as smartphones and other technology for long

periods of time. It has been proven that technology can enhance the intellectual capacity of

children, but most of the time this technology is just being used and abused which can often

cause many problems growing up. These problems can be Social awkwardness, lack of

awareness, and the lack of social skills along with many others.

Discussion

People just don’t understand what it is like to have a child. When having a child, you

need to be very responsible and already extremely independent. Having your kid use

technology at a young age can greatly decrease their future opportunities. There has been

many studies that show that the smartphones that are given to these children actually make

them less intelligent. When giving a child a smartphone, they will most likely be addicted to the

technology and will only pay attention to that smart phone rather than going outside and
TECHNOLOGY AND ITS IMPACT ON CHILDREN 3

playing with the other children that live around them. As a child, it is important to go outside

and play with other children or even interact with them. This builds social skills which are very

necessary within their future. If a child does not have social skills, then they will struggle in life

and no parent should want the child to struggle in their lifetimes. Obviously struggle comes and

goes, but the struggle can be limited to which a child should endure. The journal of technology

studies has conducted research where we can see just how many children and use their phone

in high school. The amount that was shown was unbelievable. Almost every student uses their

iPhone in school during their high school career. At this age, children should have a phone. The

reason why they are always on their phone during school is because they were not taught to

have enough limitations and strength to stay away from their technology. The smart phones are

meant to drag you in and keep you there. This is how they get their profit up and how they

benefit from the humans that are lacking the intellectual powers of knowing that these phones

are not healthy. Phones are like video games. Being on your phone all the time is basically

useless. Playing video games is very addicting but he can waste a lot of time. This is the same

way that a phone works. Having a phone keeps you trapped and makes you want to keep using

it, but the more you use it and the more you like it, the more time you waste without realizing

that you’re wasting time. Think about this, your child could either be on the phone playing

games that have no benefit, or your child could be outside playing with their friends or even

practicing for a sport. Giving children technology at an early age is never a good idea. It’s the

equivalent to releasing the Boogeyman to be a pet. It is always a big decision when you are

deciding something for your child because even the smallest things will affect your child’s

future. This puts a lot of pressure on the parents like a sea of waves constantly crashing on
TECHNOLOGY AND ITS IMPACT ON CHILDREN 4

them, but every parent should know that the child needs the social skills and social awareness

for becoming an adult and this is just a small amount of knowledge that should be common

sense for the parents.

Tough Decisions

When your child is looking at you with their bigeyes and asking for a phone, it will be a

tough decision but you need to say no. There are many reasons and research to support your

decision, but your child will obviously not understand and they will think that you are the devil.

When a child has a phone at such a young age, the child will tend to get less sleep. At such

young ages, it is critical to ensure that your child gets enough sleep for them to Grow and

become the adult that they eventually will be. Sleep is one of the most important things that a

child needs. Along with food and water, sleep is high in the rankings in which the child needs.

Scholastic scope had conducted research and determined their sleep is very important and

when a child has technology at such a young age they’re asleep hours tend to decrease. As a

child we do not fully understand what is best for us, and that is why the parents make the

tough decisions. The decisions will decide your child’s future. Even if the decision is getting your

child ice cream after their big win in their football game or not. The child will remember the ice

cream and remember to focus on the little things that make them happy. This is just one

example of how such small decisions can impact your child’s life. Now imagine if you did not

allow a child to have social interaction for the majority of their childhood. This is basically what

the phone does to them. There’s a virtual jail that keeps you locked inside virtual reality. The

children clearly don’t see what is happening and they need to be guided through the decisions
TECHNOLOGY AND ITS IMPACT ON CHILDREN 5

that they are making. This is why being a parent is tough and the decisions that they have to

make are very important for their child’s future. Just like mentioned earlier in the passage,

every parent should want the best for their child so why not make it happen and I don’t give

your children technology. They need the sleep to be the best that they can when later years

come by.

What Are The Pros And Cons? The pros of having a smartphone as a child can be heavy if the

parents limit how much the child uses the phone. There is a phrase that I have found from

Bronson, P. Current events, it says “ Smart phones, smart kids' '. This just goes to show how

people believe that technology can make kids smarter, but at the same time it is very

dangerous and to make kids be less smart. For a kid to have advanced technology, it will be

common sense that the kid will then become smarter than the rest. The problem is not the

technology, the problem is the humans. Humans will take such advanced technology and then

play games like candy crush saga. This is a waste of time and technology. We were blessed to

have this magical device in our hands and what we do with it, we download card games and

play them on . our phone. We live in this virtual reality where everything is OK and we cannot

be touched. With all this technology that can answer any question that comes to our mind, any

math problem that we see on a paper, and any problem that we have with our physical well-

being we use it to play video games. This is the reason and example of why technology is not

bad, but if you limit it then it will be good for you.Technology is like having a gun. You can use a

gun for self protection or hunting, or you can use the gun for mass murder. The gun itself is not

bad, it just depends on how the Holder of the item uses it. The gun does not go around and fire
TECHNOLOGY AND ITS IMPACT ON CHILDREN 6

itself, the human is what makes it go off and what makes it do what it does. No you’re probably

wondering what does a gun have to do with your smartphone. Well A gun related to a smart

phone by being controlled by the user. The technology itself is not bad but the user can make it

to where it is bad and can decrease their mental well-being.

Conclusions and Future Study

We can conclude that children should not have technology at a young age, but if they do

then it should be monitored and controlled by the parents. The only problem with this is that

some parents are just not good parents. Not every parent can monitor their children’s phone

while taking care of them and putting food on the table. Some parents can’t even afford phones

which forces their kids to go outside and play with the other children. Personally, I grew up in

the projects where nobody could afford anything. If you had a phone you were considered rich.

This forced me to go outside and play all the time and I loved it. There’s nothing wrong with

being an active child. Having technology as a child will keep you indoors and make you explore

the world less. As a child, you need to explore and you need to build the social skills and

awareness of things around you. When Pokémon go came out, we saw that people were

actually dying because they were on their phones so much and they weren’t paying attention to

everything that was happening around them. This just goes to show how addicting phones can

be. Phones are meant to be addicting and they are pretty good at it. No parent would want

their child to be not aware of their surroundings. Every parent wants their child to be safe and

having a technology to be addicted to at such a young age will give them the lack of awareness.
TECHNOLOGY AND ITS IMPACT ON CHILDREN 7

The answer is simple: if your child has a phone then only allow them a couple hours a day on

the phone and take them to the park regularly to make friends and be active outdoors.
