Reflection Paper

Thinking back to the start of this year over four months ago, a lot of things were different in my

life; Corona was just a drink, Zoom was just a verb, and the Internet was just for fun. Throughout

this semester, my perception of the Internet has changed as I have achieved three important goals

outlined in the course syllabus; becoming familiar with a majority of Google based applications,

creating a web-based personal portfolio showcasing knowledge gained over the semester, and

discussing the functions of computers in classrooms, businesses, home, and other environments.

I would describe myself as being very technologically literate both before this course and now.

Having been born in the year 2000, I grew up in a world where the influence of technology in

our society has exploded and I have never known a life that does not involve computers. Coming

from this background of having computers from a young age, I would say that, for myself and

many others my age, using technology seems natural. In high school I also took the course AP

Computer Science Principles where I took this knowledge a step further into the world of

programming. Although I mainly used computers and the Internet for entertainment purposes, I

came into this course with a beneficial background in technology.

While before the start of this course I knew a fair amount about computers and the Internet, there

were still things I didn’t know how to do and applications I was uncertain of using. For example,

I hardly ever used Google applications, specifically Google Drive. The modules calling for the

application of Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms within the Google Drive allowed me to

become more comfortable with their functions and I learned the variety of unique features that

made these applications useful in my professional and personal lives.

Another important thing I learned in this course was how to build both a website and

professional portfolio. Creating a website always seemed to be a daunting and unfamiliar task

and was something I thought I would never even attempt to do. Not only did I end up being able

to create my own website efficiently, but I also was given the guidance to build a portfolio that

could demonstrate my professional abilities. This new knowledge will allow me to display

myself, along with my ambitions and skills, to future employers in a refined and professional

manner.

This course also improved my capability to discuss the functions of computers in many facets of

life. Throughout all of our course modules, I had to use a wide variety of computer and Internet

applications. Some I knew how to use already and others I had never used before. By becoming

comfortable with exploring new applications and brushing up on my knowledge of familiar ones,

I now feel greater confidence in my ability to utilize and navigate different technology in the

future. This confidence will most definitely make the transition from academic and personal

application to future uses in my professional life.

In all honesty, at the start of this semester I felt as though this course wouldn’t be very useful to

me. I thought I knew more than enough about computers, the Internet, and their many

applications. However, I can now say that I gained additional experience and confidence that’s

invaluable to my future. If I can take away one lesson from EDT 180, it’s that you can never

know too much.
