What education level do you prefer to teach; elementary, secondary, higher ed?
During my carrier of 15 years teaching in Thailand, mainly in Bangkok, there were so many
different innovations and rules imposed by the different schools, that is a challenge to keep up with
all of them and to find out, which level to teach. I started off with teaching from Kindergarten to
High school and some cooperate communication business courses for mid-level staff in English and
German. Since I got sent to different schools by an agency. Within, from all these experiences, I
prefer the higher elementary till mid secondary level to teach, as I can better relate to this age group
then to Kindergarten or lower elementary, with singing songs and dance as a teaching medium. It
also depends where the school is located, the cultural parents background, and the school’s policy to
manifest the educational level preferred to teach. Probably, this might change before and after
COVID 19. At the moment I am looking for a new school as I quite my last job as Social Studies
Since I was a young boy, I was fascinated from some of my teachers, the way they could
motivate us and solve challenging situations. But I could not study to get a teacher’s license, it got
chosen for me, that I would instead study in a manufacturing field to produce machine parts. Out of
this situation, I discovered, that many of my colleagues came to ask for help and I could train them
how to improve their productivity in changing the production method. Later in life, I lost sight for
teaching, but it came back, when I decided to live abroad in Bangkok. Firstly, I needed to improve my
English so I could communicate and work as a teacher after taking the TESOL certificate, ever since, it
was almost the only choice for me here in Thailand to work legally. On the other side, I was
interested in getting to know the Thai culture and the way of teaching as a surrogate of having a
family on my own.
Where do you work, and how does your current position connect to education?
At the moment I am in the process of finding another school here around Bangkok. In the
former school I was teaching Social studies, which included economics, geography, the different
methods and concepts of governments and history. My next teaching job will have challenging
students and I am not sure yet with maybe students with learning disabilities, in which this course
should give me more answers on how to deal with the different disabilities in class room, in which I
I had until now not many students with the need of special education but interested in how
to deal with students which don’t talk or have other learning or mental disabilities.
Thailand or back home in Switzerland where I could use English as teaching medium for different
subjects.
Was there somebody who inspired you to get into the field of education?
There were four teachers they inspired me in the way they conducted their lesson, with fun
and knowledge in dealing with different characters in class, in which I would like to get into their
footsteps.
