We did remember them By Helen Tatchell

As the darkness slowly sank and the lavender-pink sky

blended with the dawning blue, the Last Post played
on a bugle as Australians stood on their driveways,
balconies and verandah’s with candles and torchlight,
heads bowed.
The year 2020 will be remembered for many things;
the coronavirus pandemic, a shortage of ‘panic buying’
toilet paper but, most importantly ANZAC Day, that
the nation embraced and commemorated in silence and
solitude.
It has been 105-years since the landing at Gallipoli on
April 25 1915, a date that has witnessed an abundance
of wreaths laid at local cenotaphs and memorials;
veterans have marched, and school students have
studied the history thereafter. This year there was a
new way to remember those who fought in WWI and
for those who did not return.
Moorabool united as the stillness of the historic
morning was broken by warbling magpies and rowdy
ravens, not a breath of wind as radios echoed the
live stream of the ANZAC Day service from the war
memorial in Canberra.
Leading into Saturday 25 April 2020, drawings on
paper, chalk and paint was used to decorate windows
and garage doors and even driveways, of homes.
Whilst in home isolation, one young 12-year old boy
from Darley was inspired to draw and paint a poppy
with the words Lest We Forget in his driveway.
Sam Chetcuti has attended a service every year since
he was born; his great-grandfather served in WWII.
“He was inspired to do the drawing to say thanks to
his great-grandfather,” mother Jac told the Moorabool
News.
“Since born, he has attended services locally at
our Bacchus Marsh RSL and also at the Shine of
Remembrance in Melbourne.”
Ms Chetcuti said it took her son a couple of hours to
complete the artwork as “we made the paint ourselves”.
“He also wanted to make his dad and Nannu (Maltese
for grandfather) proud,” she said.
Once completed Sam placed his great-grandfathers
photo and war medals on the driveway mural.
Sam’s great-grandfather was Sgt Costantino Chetcuti
(23 March 1916 - 10 November 1999) who served in
WWII 1939-1945 with the Maltese regiment of the British
Army. His grandfather served with the Australian

OUR SERVICES
Yes, we are still here for you! In the spotlight this week, we
check in with our Child,Youth and Family Services team.
It’s been ‘business unusual’ for the Child, Youth & Family
Services unit, as the team completely redesigns and
changes the way they engage with our community and
continue to find creative online ways to support children,
families and young people.
It is unusual for the team to be spending so much time
behind a screen and while we are physically distancing from
each other, our social connections and how we engage
with the community is more important than ever. The

services via phone/video from home/office and will see
babies under eight weeks in person at a centre as required.
Support to vulnerable children and families through either
social support or the provision of material aid support
continues to be a priority for the team.
Youth Services continues to deliver programs and

Bark up the right tree

By Caitlin Bewley
(3rd Yr Swinburne Uni)

The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) are asking Moorabool

residents to ‘make like a tree and leave’ your vote online for this
year’s competition, that involves a local icon.
For the first time in the Victorian Tree of the Year competition’s
duration, the nine shortlisted trees are from regional Victoria, one
is the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour.
National Trust of Victoria media spokesperson Miriam Fox, said
the “initiative has the power to bring communities together in a
time of social distancing to celebrate culture, nature and life.”
“The current isolation restrictions have resulted in the public
discovering their love for both nature and their local community,”
she said.
“In just one day we’ve had an amazing 674 votes from Victorians
supporting their local leafy giant,
“Whilst simple, this is a great initiative with the hope of bringing
together Victorians in a time where a sense of community is so
important,” Ms Fox said.
National Trust is the state’s leading advocate for the protection of
trees and celebrating the positive impact they have on our lives.
Voting will run until May 10 and is as simple as going to the
National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Facebook page and click
‘Like’ on the tree you think should win.

The Victorian Tree of the Year contest aims to raise awareness of

the conservation of the state’s natural heritage, and the benefits
trees provide to our culture and way of life. The National Trust
of Australia (Victoria) is the state’s leading advocate for the
protection of trees, celebrating the benefits they provide to our
communities. Since 1982 the Trust has classified over 20,000
trees in 1,200 places across the state on the National Trust
Significant Tree Register.
As Victoria begins to recover from the devastating impact of the
summer bushfires and learns to navigate the ongoing COVID-19
pandemic, this year’s competition holds special significance
in celebration of nature’s giants that adorn local communities
