Elizabeth Kane is the daughter of Jacob Kane and the twin sister of Kate Kane, the
Batwoman. When Kate and her sister were ten years old they and their mother were
kidnapped by Intergang, the Religion of Crime. Her father's black ops activities around the
world had hurt their interests and they wanted to use his family as hostages against him. This
was in the early days of Intergang when they were not as powerful and competent as they are
now. Colonel Kane was able to find out where they were holding his family and stormed the
location with his men. An Intergang fanatic though who was standing guard over the family
pulled his gun and shot Kate's mother through the head just moments before a sniper's bullet
took him out, despite her frantic pleas and offers of a deal. Kate was forced to hear her
mother's last desperate moments and thought that in seconds it would be her turn. It was her
father though who freed her and took her away from the dreadful scene. What happened to
Elizabeth the Kane's never found out, despite years of intensive searching by Jacob. This
traumatic incident explains a lot about the driven and obsessive nature of father and
daughter in their war on crime and their willingness to employ such extreme measures as the
Colony and becoming Batwoman.

It was not until many years later when she had become Batwoman that Kate found out what
happened to her sister. Early in her career as Batwoman she naturally pursued the Religion of
Crime, working with her old flame Renee Montoya and Nightwing. In a confrontation with
Bruno Mannheim the leader and prophet of Intergang was supposedly killed when the firetrap
of a cult hideout they were fighting him in went up after a flaming brazier was knocked over
and ignited a barrel of oil. This left Intergang rudderless and for a while it split apart into
numerous factions, each accusing the others of being heretics and fighting for dominance.
The Intergang presence in Gotham though found a new leader after a while, the High
Madame. Batwoman moved to dismantle their renewed operations and cult activity and
capture this priestess of crime. When she did catch up to her she was faced with a woman
who looked disturbingly like herself. The High Madame was clearly mad though, calling
herself Alice, as in the Lewis Carroll Wonderland stories, and speaking mostly in quotes from
the books. Her half-mad followers seemed to think that she was divinely inspired and that her
crazy drivel was revelatory and prophetic.

Kate succeeded in capturing this Red Alice, and attempted to interrogate her. When she did
so though she became a bit more lucid and started addressing her as sister and talking about
their childhood. When Kate demanded an explanation for this she giggled and asked if she did
not recognize herself. To Kate's horror she realized that this twisted creature was Elizabeth
and that she had been in Intergang's clutches all this time. What had they done to her sister?
With Batman's experience in mental deprogramming she attempted to restore sanity to her
long-lost sibling. Given her propensity for Lewis Carroll Batman suspected that Jervis Tetch,
the Mad Hatter, had been employed to brainwash her. Red Alice though turned out to be
more than just a poor madwoman. When she had Batwoman alone with her she whispered
things to her, things that made Kate feel as though she was going mad. Kate ended up freeing
her while caught up in a delusion that she was rescuing her sister and making an escape from
their kidnapping when they were children.

Red Alice has appeared and disappeared irregularly in Batwoman's life ever since. She does
not actually run the Religion of Crime, but she is a divine inspirational figure who they rally
around. This has not entirely stopped Intergang's internal feuding, several different factions
are contesting the meaning of their chief priestesses utterances and seeking to have control
of her. Batwoman has actually had to rescue her sister from one group that sought to kill her
in the belief that she would rise from the dead. Red Alice does have strange powers of her
own. She can cause a mental disassociation state in those around her by talking to them.
People see their fears and hopes, dark desires and scenes from the past, which Alice can use
to manipulate them. She also has the power to heal and even raise from the dead, restoring
her injured and slain followers. From Kate's descriptions of her witnessing or experiencing
these powers Batman is suspicious and afraid. He knows that Intergang has links to Darkseid,
unknowing though they are, and these sound like New God powers to him, the sort of things
that Genesis Boxes can do. Elizabeth was gone for a long time with no hint of what happened
to her. Was she on Earth for all that time, or was she taken somewhere else? Batman knows
that the slavers of Apokolips take interesting people back to their world for breaking and
brainwashing, despite the best efforts of the Green Lanterns to monitor and guard against
this. The daughter of Colonel Kane, enemy of Intergang, would be of such interest. The
Justice League has marked Red Alice as someone they want taken into their custody the next
time she resurfaces.
