MANAGER SCENARIO

Manager Scenario

Hello, my name is Christian Ochoa, I have recently been promoted as a Manager for a

local Super Market, where I have 30 employees available to work for me a total of 40 hours per

week. Out of this list of employees, I have 20 males of which 15 of them are under the age of 25

years old and I also have 5 males who are 30 years of age and older. I also have 10 females who

are all under the age of 35 working with me at any given point of the day. My employees are

hard workers and it is safe to say that this group is very honest, and I do not have any issues

since shrink has always been accounted for in the store, as well as spoilage, any sort of food that

goes to waste that needs to be discarded.

My crew takes care of the store and I, as a team we have never had any problems in that

department, however, there are some issues that I must constantly deal with especially as the

weekend gets closer, for example, most young employees under the age of 25 will want to leave

early on Friday nights and then again will want to come in late on Saturday Mornings. that very

difficult to agree to since my scheduled includes the younger guys come in on time on a Saturday

morning. Saturdays are the days of the week when it is most busy, people are usually getting

ready for Bar-b-q’s or getting ready for the up and coming work week. Now, on the other hand I

have not had a problem with my female staff, they are always on time to work and will stay until

the last customer is done shopping. I have noticed that I do not have the issue with my staff who

are older closer to the age of 35 of nor do I have the same issue with the women who work for

me. I have noticed that the younger males closer to the age of 25 have been the ones calling in

late multiple Saturdays and as a matter of fact these are the same guys who have been working

for the store now for over two years.

My problem is having so many able-bodied males available to work at the Super-Market

at the busiest day of the week “Saturday” and at the same time having my staff call in sick or late

at a constant. They do not understand that they are the face and make the wheels turn for of the

company. I was young once and I know that now that the guys are of age, and they want to go

out on Friday nights and party with their friends. I have heard from the girls that some of my

guys have shown up to work hungover and this is no condition to show up period. I am going to

have a meeting to address the fact that for insurance purposes we cannot have employees show

up hung over or not rested at all, since this could be a liability. Some of these same guys drive

forklift for the store as well as pallet jacks which are heavy machinery that is used to haul

hundreds of pounds of merchandise produce simultaneously into the store while customers are

walking the isles. During times like these I would rather have all employees who are older

preferably with in the ages of 35 to 50 working during higher traffic times. the truth is that I

believe older employees are more responsible and they will have a reason not to go out on Friday

nights and show up bright eyed and bushy tailed on Saturday mornings. Now on the other hand, I

also need to consider the fact that employees who are younger can work at a faster pace and for

longer periods of time with less fatigue. So, it is imperative for the company to employ the

younger faster group of employees is always needed to speed up the production all around the

store.

There are ways that I have contemplated to fix these issues with my younger crew

members such as I will be addressing on a pre-shift Saturday morning meeting that there will not

be random drug testing and I will also need to implement a three strike rule where if an employee

needs to call in for any reason other than medical. After three call ins then they could be demoted

to potentially losing their job. I wish this was not the way to treat my guys since I do have to

work with them on a daily basis and at times, I will also have to talk to my employees in a

motivational manner addressing that we need to have people step up and help out in areas that

the see need improvement. I believe that if I talk to them with will understand. I know that my

employees enjoy their job, and I say this because for one I think they are here at work more that

they are at home. I always like to think of my guys as family, but there is the bigger issue which

is customer safety and insurance liability purposes. So, I believe that by being stricter and if I

have to fire some of my best to teach a lesson then I will. This way everyone else who is serious

about working can step up their pace at work and take up the spot that will be vacant.

I have read your excerpt and would like to congratulate you on on your recent promotion

as Manager to your local Food Market. Now, in your writings I have noticed a few of your

comments which I believe are very important to consider if you are remotely considering firing

your employees for the reason of coming in late to work on a Saturday morning. Please take in to

consideration that you have honest employees who have been employed with the company for at

least Six months and to my understanding you have having this recurring issue with your veteran

employees the ones who have worked with you for at least three to five years, and lastly consider

that your employees have been acclimated to the work where they are now proficient in pace and

accurate to company standards.

“Also, because there are some, that taking pleasure in contemplating their own power in

the acts of conquest, which they pursue farther than their security requires;” (Hobbes). If you

have considered firing your employees. You must for one understand that these gentlemen are

challenging you to a contest of power and will, they are attempting to push your limits to see

how far they can go with out you breaking or also trying to see how much you will bend to check

your limits. Understand that the position of power you have now has also been held by other

men, like you who in certain cases will attempt to enforce their will upon all employees and will

command respect. Please do not be such a man, and understand your workers need you to be

stronger than them in order to maintain order.

Secondly, you must understand that all these gentlemen need to have a passion for what

they do, as I previously mentioned, “The passions that incline men to peace, are fear of Death

and desire to such things as are necessary for commodious living: and a hope by their industry to

obtain them.” (Hobbes.) Your workers need to find a desire to come to work, in certain cases this

may involve your younger employees obtaining a new vehicle or a serious relationship, your

employees need to have a drive to show up even at the earliest time in the mornings. Hence this

is the reason you do not have problems with employees who are of an older age. I believe your

workers are at a good age to become more responsible towards your direction since they have

been working for you for the past three to five years.

Finally, you need to have a set of standards between your workers, operating machinery

while you have clients walking the store at the same time is ridiculous. How can you expose your

employees and customers to such perils? People are hauling tremendous amounts of weight, I

have said this before and you are so fortunate to not have been sued or even worse fired from

your job, this is your responsibility to assess the physical state of your workers you need to be

out on the floor at all time to do so. I consider you fortunate to have kept your job.

In conclusion, I know you have mentioned that your intent is to fire your workers when

in reality you need to keep up with your duties as a Manager for the Food Market you work with,

you are failing at your job and there are many actions that need to be taken to run a smooth

operation. Please do not consider this a criticism but rather an instruction to help you save your

employees and keep your customers safe for years to come.
