LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Name: Brooke Smith

Grade Level: 5th
School: Arlington Elementary School
Date: 1/30/2020
Time: 11:05

Reflection from prior lesson (if you did not teach the previous lesson,
what did you observe that will help you prepare and teach this lesson?): I
did not teach the previous lesson. This is a project based on the most recent
unit the students just took an assessment. It is all about weather, water
cycle, and the different spheres around Earth.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:

5-ESS12-1: Develop a model to describe the interaction of geosphere,

biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere. (SEP: 2; DCI: ESS2.A; CCC:
Systems)

5.SL.5 Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual

displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of
main ideas or themes.

5.W.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and
organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Lesson Objectives:

I can accurately create and present a weather report that includes either a
live forecast or a 7-day forecast by the end of the week.

I can correctly include and discuss 5 scientific terms from our current unit by
the end of the week.

I can find a relevant image to use and enhance my report by the end of the
lesson.

I can correctly write a script by the end of the week.

Materials Needed:

Lesson Plan Format document last revision: June, 2010

- Laptops
- Meteorologist Report Sheet
- iPad
- Green Screen

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:
-        One student that will openly tell you he hates group work.  He
would much
                    prefer to work individually.
-        One student with cochlear implants
-        4 students on IEPs
-        4 students in Title I
- Students will just have come in from recess.  They are able to get
their snack and have milk break at this time.  They will need a
few minutes to get settled.
- Lunch comes directly after this class. Students may get antsy.

A.  The Lesson

1. Introduction (5 minutes)
 getting attention
o “Clap once if you can hear me”
 relating to past experience and/or knowledge
o Bring up the news. Ask students to raise their hands if their
parents watch the news on TV. Then ask for a raise of hands of
how many students watch the news or have seen the news on
the TV. Introduce our Meteorologist Report that we will be
spending the next week on.
 creating a need to know
o It is important to understand the weather and how what happens
in the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere can
affect the weather we have.
 sharing objective, in general terms
o I can make a Meteorologist Report on a live or 7-day forecast.
o I can correctly use 5 scientific terms we have learned in our unit
within our report.
o I can find a relevant image on the internet to enhance my report.
o I can write a script.

2. Content Delivery (include time allotment & instructional
methodologies)
a. Explanation of Report (15 minutes): I will hand out the paper to go
along with the report. I will introduce the report. I will go through

each section and answer any questions. The students will be
deciding on a place and time frame for the report. They will also
need to include 5 scientific terms from our unit we just finished.
They will need to somehow relate to the students’ report. They will
also need to select an image they will use. This can be an image
from a live forecast or a 7-day forecast. They will then need to write
a script for what they and their partner will be saying during their
report. Once they have practiced their report, they may record it on
the iPad. They will use a green screen app to record their report on
the image they already had selected. The recording will not happen
until all of the previous steps are completed and signed off by a
teacher. After explaining everything to the students, I will show
some examples from the previous years.
b. Work Time (30 minutes): The students will spend this time working.
They get to choose a partner. They will brainstorm ideas. Once
they land on an idea, they may get their laptops and begin their
report. Tara and I will float the room to check in on students
throughout this time.

3. Closure (5 minutes)
a. I will first have the students put any laptops away. I will then ask
students to share the ideas they have landed on with the class. I
will also answer any remaining questions. I will also tell the
students to watch the news tonight to see what the meteorologist
does on the TV. I will tell them to pay attention to how he talks and
what he does and think about what things they could do to make
their report awesome.

B. Assessments Used
 Report Sheet: This sheet provides me with the information the students
are going to use in their report. This shows me how the students are
doing on their reports and with the content.
 Script: Their scripts really show me if they are accurately including the
scientific terms into their report. It also shows me if the students are able
to write their report in a correct script form.
 Meteorologist Report Video: This will show me if the students were able
to meet the standards and objective for this lesson.

C. Differentiated Instruction
 We have 3 teachers in our room during this time to help students. This
makes it really easy to spend time with groups that need the extra
help. I will be able to keep checking in with students and working one-
on-one with them if they need. The students also have their books,
notes, and the internet to help them. The students are also working in
pairs together on this report.
