Assignment 1

On the agreeing side of, “does morality require vegetarianism,” it is concluded that morality
does require vegetarianism. Nathan Nobis said that we should stop consuming meat and the
purchase of animal-based products, he also said that being a vegetarian or vegan is an obligation.
Modern techniques of animal agriculture and slaughter, especially “factory farming,” is the reason
why most people turn to vegetarians or vegans. These animals are kept indoors most of the time,
cramped in overcrowded pens, starved to death and the exposure of cold air also causes them to
die. When people learn the suffering of these animals, especially after they’ve actually seen it, they
don’t want to be involved with it anymore. Another reason said that supports the agreeing side is
that meat is not needed to live. Most health issues, such as heart diseases, obesity and so on, is
caused by a meat-based diet. A singer stated that becoming a vegetarian (or vegan) is a way to test
our virtuousness.

On the disagreeing side of, “does morality require vegetarianism,” it is concluded that
morality does not require vegetarianism. From the point of view of the “no” side, the discussion is
not about how consuming meat is able to be put in our lifestyle in a positive way, it’s not about
whether consuming meat is morally right or not. A virtue recognized by Fearnley-Whittingstall is
responsibility in purchasing and husbandry. Responsibility in husbandry is defined as the acceptant
of the moral status of the animals we farm for our consumption. We should also acknowledge the
fact that domestic animals are living creatures that should be respected, cared for and valued.
Another virtue recognized by Fearnley-Whittingstall is thrift, it means to stop wasting the animals, as
much as you can, it also reminds us to not forget to respect the animals that died for our
consumption and the farmer who have worked hard to raise the animals for us.
