CLASSES OF ACCOMODATION ON INDIAN RAILWAYS

Five different classes of accommodation can usually be found on Indian Railways trains:-

Second Class (SC)

India’s poorest people travel in second class, as well as those who haven't been fortunate
enough to secure a ticket in sleeper class. Reservations aren’t required and the concept of
overcrowding really is taken to a new level.

Sleeper Class (SL)

Most of India's middle class travel in sleeper class. Carriages are divided into open-plan
compartments with six beds in each. The beds are stacked vertically in three tiers on
either side of the compartments.

Three Tier Air Conditioned Class (3A)

Three Tier Air Conditioned Class, known as 3A, offers a significant step up in comfort
and quietness. The carriages in 3A are laid out in the same manner as in sleeper class.
However, the windows are covered with tinted glass that’s unable to be opened, and air-
conditioning keeps the carriages cool. Sheets, pillows, blankets, and towels are provided
to passengers.

Two Tier Air Conditioned Class (2A)

Two Tier Air Conditioned Class, known as 2A, attracts India’s upper class travelers.
There’s much more space, as there are only four beds in each compartment. The beds are
stacked vertically in two tiers on either side. Just like in the other classes, there are also
two tiers of beds along the aisle outside the compartments. Bedding and towels are also
provided, the same as in 3A.

First Class Air Conditioned (1A)

First Class Air Conditioned, known as 1A, is found only on the most popular inter-state
train routes. The cost is around double that of 2A and is comparable to that of flying.
Compartments have lockable doors, carpet and either two or four beds, stacked vertially
in tiers. Sheets, pillows, blankets, and towels are also provided.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

It is available during all 24 hours.

ffered through Mail express, super fast , Rajdhani & Shatabdi
Trains.
About 1520 Trains runs daily.
Variety of compartments based on comfort :

• AC first class.
• AC sleeper.
• First class.
• AC three tier.
• AC chair car.
• Sleeper class
• Ordinary chair car.
Types of concerns & complexities:

• 44 types of quotas.
• 8 types of trains.
• 9 types of classes.
• 162 types of concessions.
• 127 types of bogies

WEBSITE DESIGN CONSTRAINTS

1. Bookings should be made as far in advance as possible (up to 90 days before

departure), especially during the busiest traveling times from November to
March. Otherwise, you’ll need to be prepared to be flexible about your travel
dates and times, and class of accommodation.
2. It's recommended that we book our tickets online to avoid the often maddening
Indian bureaucracy and disorderly queues. However, the Internet reservation
website can be slow and temperamental. If you happen to get an error message
(such as "service unavailable"), try refreshing your browser or go back to the start
and re-enter your transaction. Patience is the key here.
3. Sometimes the station name doesn’t reflect the place name (for example, the main
railway station in Kolkata/Calcutta is called Howrah), so it pays to do a little
research. You can do this by using the Indian Railways Trains at a Glance
timetable.
4. Indian railways operates a number of quota schemes. Last minute bookings are
allowed through a "Tatkal" quota on some of the most popular trains, whereby
beds are released for reservation five days in advance.
5. Foreign tourists can avail of a special tourist quota, which can also help in getting
a bed during peak times. The availability of both quotas can be checked when you
check the availability of your desired train on the Indian Railways Passenger
Reservation Inquiry website. Unfortunately, the website's capability for bookings
using these quotas is limited so it's best to make them over the counter.
6. Cancellations happen often, particularly in the 24 hours up to departure. If you’re
waitlisted, you’ll have the best chance of getting a bed in sleeper class as the
majority of beds (and therefore cancellations) are in this class.

WORKING OF THE PROPOSED SYSTEM

• Find the name and number of the train you want to travel on by going to the
Indian Railways Passenger Reservation Inquiry website. Click on "Train Berth
Availability" under "Services". An on-line Indian Railways Trains at a Glance
timetable is also available to assist you.

• Enter the details of the station you want to depart from and the station you want
to travel to, your journey date, and class of accommodation that you want to
travel by.

• If there are no trains running directly between the stations you've selected, you’ll
get an error message and will need to go back and try some different station
names. Otherwise, you’ll be presented with a list of trains. Select the desired train
and class you wish to travel by (and quota if relevant), and check the availability
of beds. You can also check the train fare and route at this point.
• If there are no beds available on your particular train, the availability will show as
Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC). You can still book a ticket and you’ll
be given a seat on the train, but not necessarily a bed unless there are enough
cancellations. If the train is fully occupied, availability will be shown as Waitlist
(WL). If you book a ticket in the waitlist queue, you won’t be allowed to board
the train unless there are enough cancellations for a seat or bed to become
available.
• Once we've found a suitable train to travel on, make note of its name and number.
• If we're booking over the counter, print out the reservation form. Complete the
form and take it to a reservation office. Alternatively, you can obtain a reservation
form at the office and complete it there. Try to go to one of the facilities for
international tourists (click on the yellow "Tourist Bureau" menu near the top of
the screen) as these places are much more efficient and customer friendly. Be
aware that you must pay with US dollars, UK pounds, Euros, or Indian rupees
and an Encashment Certificate if purchasing a ticket there.
• If we're booking on line go to the IRCTC Online Passenger Reservation Site and
register. Log in and then enter the station details of your travel, date of travel, and
class of travel. Select e-ticket (electronic ticket) and click on "Find Trains". Select
your train from the list that appears at the bottom of the page and click on "Book
Ticket". Complete the electronic reservation form, including the Photo ID
(passport) details of one of the passengers, and click on "Go". You’ll be shown
the details of your booking and you should review these.
• If our details look fine, click on "Make Payment". Choose the bank that you want
to use to process your payment. For international credit cards, select AXIS PG.
Otherwise, if you’re using an AMEX card, select American Express. Enter and
submit card details.
• All transaction will be processed and we’ll be provided with a booking
confirmation. Print this out and carry it with you when you travel.
• All bookings, made both over the counter and on line, are assigned a 10 digit
PNR number. If we’re in the RAC or WL queue, we can check the status of your
booking on the Indian Railways website by clicking on "PNR inquiry", then
entering our number and clicking on the "Get PNR status" button.

PROPOSED WEBSITE HOMEPAGE

Following is the front- end representation of railway reservation website which is

partially completed and there is a lot more to be done on the back- end. In the front-end,
there is a coverability of all the aspects of reservation as:-

 Hyperlinks to different pages associated with this webpage

 Services and Information
 A separate section for online reservation
 A section for any user search
 A section for railway ticket booking
 A section to view the fares
 A section to visualise categories of raiways along with other article to be searched
So, working on this website would include the use of asp, html, javascript with the
inclusion of Ms Access. Here links to different websites would be produced on a seperate
window.

CONCLUSION

This project is under the stage of development where we need to provide a better
interface for reservation. Basically it revolves around the following concepts:-

RESERVE SEAT :- A passenger should be able to reserve a seat in the train

specified by him if available. For this he has to fill a reservation form with the
details about his journey.

CANCEL RESERVATION :-There may arise a case when the passenger

wants to cancel his reservation .For this he has to fill a cancellation form
providing all the details about the ticket reserved by him. The clerk then checks
for the entries from the database and cancels the reservation finally returning the
ticket amount with some deduction.

UPDATE TRAIN INFORMATION & REPORT GENERATION :- Only

the Administrator has the right to make changes in train details(train name, train
no. etc.).The system should also be able to generate report when needed in the
form of reservation charts , train schedule charts etc.

VIEW RESERVATION STATUS & TRAIN SCHEDULE : All the users

should be able to see the information about the reservation status & train
schedule, train name, train number etc.

It further includes:-

o Seat availability
o Train berth availability
o Train schedule
o PNR enquiry
o Fare enquity

So, the final view of the webpage would provide the utilisation of:-

 Javascript
 ASP
 Access
