Determination of Force
Press tools shear off the required work pieces from the strip.
Yield strength is a material property and is the stress corresponding to the yield point at which the
material begins to deform plastically.

Plastic deformation is the ability of a solid material to undergo permanent deformation, a non-
reversible change of shape in response to applied forces.

Rollover - When the punch impacts the sheet, the clearance between the punch & die allows the sheet to
plastically deform and "rollover" the edge.
As the tool penetrates the sheet further, the shearing results in a vertical burnished zone of material.

Ultimate tensile strength (UTS), often shortened to tensile strength (TS), ultimate strength is the
maximum stress that a material can withstand while being stretched or pulled before breaking.

Brittle materials the ultimate tensile strength is close to the yield point

Ductile materials the ultimate tensile strength can be higher.

The cracks take place when the punch has penetrated about 40% of sheet thickness.

Further motion of the punch only pushes the fractured piece through the die.

Shear strength is a material property that describes a material’s resistance against a

shear load before the component fails in shear.
