The Difference between ‫ـ ﹲﺔ‬‫ ﻟﹸــﻐ‬and ‫ﺡ‬

 ‫ﻼ‬‫ﺻـﻄ‬‫ﺍ‬ Terminologies

Every word may have more than one meaning, depending on how it is used.

‫ـ ﹲﺔ‬‫ – ﻟﹸــﻐ‬the literal meaning of a word in the original 3rabic language that the 3rabs used
‫ﺡ‬ ‫ﻼ‬‫ﺻـﻄ‬‫ – ﺍ‬the technical meaning of a word
• literal meaning- an agreement
• technical meaning – the agreement of certain group of scholars of a particular science1 on giving
something a name after moving it from its original usage.

Example:

‫ـ ﹲﺔ‬‫ﻟﹸــﻐ‬ ‫ﺡ‬
 ‫ﻼ‬‫ﺻـﻄ‬‫ﺍ‬

An understanding In Jurisprudence - a certain kind of

‫ـﻘـﻪ‬‫ﻓ‬ understanding of the ruling of the outer

action of an individual

A kind of purification of In Fiqh - a certain kind of purification

both physical and spiritual
‫ﺍﻟﻄﻬﺎﺭﺓ‬ that is needed to carry out an act of
worship i.e. wudhu’, ghusul &
tayammum

A way or a method e.g. ‫ﺍﷲ‬ ‫ﺔ‬‫ﺳﻨ‬ In Minhaj – a certain kind of way of the

Anything that came before Referring to the first three generations of

Muslims.
‫ﺳﻠﻒ‬

There are several different sciences in Islaam in which many different terminologies are used e.g. Arabic (12 Sciences); Basics of

Jurisprudence; Jurisprudence; Basics of Tafseer; Tafseer; Tareekh; Mustalah; Jarh wa Ta3deel; at-Takhreej; al-Faraa’idh, etc. These
different sciences use terms that may not necessarily mean the same in the 3rabic language, let alone with other sciences.

A turning; changing In Arabic Science – a certain

 ‫ﺗ‬‫ﻭ‬ ‫ﻑ‬
 ‫ﺮ‬‫ﺻ‬ kind of turning/changing of
“..and in the veering of words from one form to another

In Arabic Science – to gather

A gathering of something
‫ـﺔ‬‫ﺿﻤ‬
 the lips and pucker it to produce
the “u” sound

An opening In Arabic Science – to open the

‫ﺔ‬‫ﻓﹶﺘﺤ‬ mouth by moving the upper jaw

upwards and the lower jaw downwards
to produce the “a” sound

A break In Arabic Science – to “break”

‫ﻛﹶﺴﺮﺓ‬ the lips as if smiling, to produce
the “i” sound

Stillness In Arabic Science – the stillness

‫ﻜﻮﻥ‬‫ﺳ‬ of the lips to produce a “pause”

to silence the letter

A strain or pull; stretch In Arabic Science- the pulling

‫ﺓ‬‫ـﺪ‬‫ﺷ‬ or stretching of the letter to

produce a doubling effect

Principle If two (2) identical letters come in a row, the first one bearing a sukoon and the second being a ‫ﻙ‬‫ﺤﺮ‬
 ‫ﺘ‬‫ﻣ‬
(vowelled), the two will be fused together and marked with a ‫ﺓ‬‫ﺷﺪ‬ to indicate a doubled- letter.

A movement In Arabic Science – the movement

‫ﺮﻛﹶـﺔ‬ ‫ﺣ‬ of the lips when pronouncing the

letters
