Task:
Identify a contemporary issue (or phenomenon/event) within a
reputable source that can be understood or addressed using
principles/concepts or theories based in social and/or organisational
psychology.
Doesn’t have to be negative J
Reputable Must have relevance to
sources: Australian context.

Assignment 1- Components
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE/phenomenon
(brief – only 2/20!!)
• Provide a brief description of the issue/problem/phenomenon/event
(doesn’t have to be negative J)
• Provide sufficient information that the reader understands the focus
• You can define the issue/phenomenon/event and reference (e.g., Gender
pay gap refers to….. (ref).

IDENTIFY TWO principles/concepts/theories based in


social and/or organisational psychology that provide understanding of the
issue or which may help to address the issue.
For EACH principle/concept/theory…

1. Use scholarly sources to define/describe the principle/concept/theory.


◦ For the description/definition, scholarly sources can be books or scholarly articles

2. Use scholarly research to explain/demonstrate the link between the


concept/theory and our understanding of the issue or its value in addressing
the issue.

◦ Find studies that have examined the relationship between the


concept/theory and the issue and use these to demonstrate how the social
or org. psych concept/theory provides understanding or can be used to
address the issue.
• Provide details of the studies (sample, method, results)
• Don’t just say… Smith (2012) and Jones (2018) found stereotypes to
be a major antecedent to the gender pay gap.

Structuring the Issue Analysis
Description of the problem:
The gender pay gap is the term used to describe ( ). It is an ongoing issue in
Australia where the average pay for women is reported to be X% lower than for
men, generally. Stereotype and Stereotype threat are two psychological concepts
that can help us to understand why the gender pay gap continues to be an issue.
Concept 1 – Stereotypes

Make sure you draw connections between the literature you report and, based on
this, how the concept helps us to understand (or address) the gender pay gap).
