Time Allowed: 120 minutes.
Total Marks: 100
Materials allowed: Textbook, lecture notes and University approved calculator
Notes:
1. All symbols have their usual meanings.

Ques. 1 [20 Marks]

(a) The displacement of a certain object in metres is described by y(t) = A sin (5t + phi),
where t is measured in seconds. It is known that the object’s displacement at t = 0
is 0.048 m and that its velocity at t = 0 is 0.062 m/s. Compute the values of A and
phi.
(b) A plate slides over a horizontal flat surface, which is lubricated with an oil whose
viscosity is 0.9 s/m2. The contact area is 0.16 m2.
a. Assuming that the oil film is 1 mm thick, compute the damping coefficient.
b. How much force is required to keep the plate moving at 0.5 m/s?

Ques. 2 [20 Marks]

The disk shown below has a radius of 0.25 m, a mass of 10 kg, and an inertia of 0.4 kg.m2
about its centre. The free length L of the spring is 1 m and its stiffness is 25 N/m. The disk is
released from rest in the position shown and it rolls without slipping. Calculate its angular
velocity when its centre is directly below point O. Assume D1 = 2.25 m, D2 = 2 m.
Ques. 3 [20 Marks]
A boxcar of mass 18 000 kg hits a shock absorber at the end of the track while moving at 1.3
m/s. The stiffness of the absorber is k = 73 000 N/m and the damping is c = 88 000 N.s/m.
Determine:
(a) The maximum spring compression and
(b) The time for the boxcar to stop.

Ques. 4 [20 Marks]

A 225 kg motor is supported by an elastic pad that deflects 6 mm when the motor is placed on
it. When the motor operates at 1750 rpm, it oscillates with an amplitude of 2.5 mm. Suppose a
680 kg platform is placed between the motor and the pad.
Compute the oscillation amplitude that would result at 1750 rpm.

Ques. 5 [20 Marks]

A motor mounted on a beam vibrates too much when it runs at a speed of 6000 rpm. At that
speed the measured force produced on the beam is 240 N. Design a vibration absorber to
attach to the beam. Because of space limitations, the absorber’s mass cannot have an
amplitude of motion greater than 2 mm.
