Drainage Area Calculation for Horizontal

Wells using OFM

1. Drainage Area Calculations

Oilfield Production analysis usually include

drained area calculation-mapping in order to
indentify new development targets.
X X
Bubble maps showing the drainage radius can
serve as a rapid process to quickly identify
areas for new infill drilling locations.

Anyway, drainage areas for horizontal X

completions, need to be analyzed separately, X
taking into account the Horizontal Productive X X
Section and the cumulative fluid production
2. Conventional Drain Radius Calculation

Vertical well drainage radius calculation of a reservoir under

hydraulic control, is based on the following equation

7758 A h (1 S w Sor ) *
Np STB
Boi

solving for rev from the area gives:

43560 N p Boi
rev ft
7758 h (1 S w Sor )

* Taken from: “OilField Manager Mapping Applications” Schlumberger Information Solutions

2. Conventional Drain Radius Calculation

rev is the radius of a perfect circle that represents the top and
bottom of a cylindrical section of the reservoir pore space that
is completely drained by the well’s production

2. Conventional Drain Radius Calculation
OFM - CV Creation
In order to successfully create OFM calculated variables for
dynamic drainage radius calculation, user can use the following
equation and apply the respective changes for any given OFM
Project

Drain.Vert.Radius = rev =
@Sqrt ((Oil.Cum * Res.Bo) / (Res.So * Res.Hnet * Res.Phi * 3.1416))

3. Horizontal Well Radius Calculation
Joshi* proposes two of the most used descriptions for the
“shape” of the area described by the fluid production of
horizontal wells such as:
Method I: Composite Rectangle Shape Method II: Elliptical Shape

Horizontal Productive Section

*Taken from: “Horizontal Well Technology.” By Sada D. Joshi PH.D
3. Horizontal Well Radius Calculation
-Method I-
Method I assumes that the drainage area presented as two half
circles at each end and a rectangle in the center. The height of
the rectangle is equal twice rev and the circles radius is
equivalent to rev

3. Horizontal Well Radius Calculation
OFM – CV Creation
As specified previously, the horizontal well drainage area
calculated variable can be defined as:
 Drain.Horiz.Area.MI=
(((Drain.Vert.Radius)^2)*3.1416)+(2*Drain.Vert.Radius*Headerid.HLong )

Even though the horizontal well drainage area has an “elliptical”

shape, OFM user can obtain a drainage radius of a circular shape
with an equivalent area in order to be visualized on bubble maps:

 Drain.Horiz.Radius.MI=
@Sqrt((Drain.Horiz.Area.MI)/3.1416)
3. Horizontal Well Radius Calculation
-Method II-
Method II assumes that the drainage area is smaller than Method I
calculation and it describes an ellipse with the major half axis equal to half
of the horizontal productive section plus rev and a minor half axis equal to
rev

3. Horizontal Well Radius Calculation
OFM – CV Creation
Also, the horizontal well drainage area calculated variable for
Method II can be defined as:
 Drain.Horiz.Area.MII=
(3.1416)(Drain.Vert.Radius+Headerid.Hlong/2)(Drain.Vert.Radius)

Due to the graphical description of the Drainage Area, by Method

II, OFM users can obtain the calculation of an equivalent circle
radius in order to be deployed at a Bubble map:
 Drain.Horiz.Radius.MII=
@Sqrt((Drain.Horiz.Area.MII)/3.1416)

3.2 Bubble Map Creation
- Ellipse Shape Map -
A way to obtain horizontal drainage area shapes in the bubble
map, is achieved by the definition of the “Ellipse” at the bubble
map “Properties” pane.
In order to successfully define the axis of the ellipse, user must
create the following CV
X.Axis.DA =
(Drain.Vert.Radius)+((Headerid.Hlong)/(2))
Y.Axis.DA =
Drain.Vert.Radius
3.2 Bubble Map Creation
- Ellipse Shape Map -
In the new Bubble map, it’s necessary to
include both of the previous CV that
carries the definition of the axis of the
shapes and the radius for shape method
select variable, for both parameters.

3.3 Bubble Map Creation
- Equivalent Radius-
Now that the previous variables are created, the user can define a single
variable in order to be used to calculate the drainage radius for every
completion, no matter if it is horizontal or vertical.

Drain.Radius
@If(Sc.Welltype="HORIZ",Drain.Horiz.Radius.MI,Drain.Vert.Radius)

This Variable can be used in a Bubble Map in order to show the drained
area for every completion. In the case of Horizontal completions, this
calculation will result in the size of an equivalent Drainage Radius of a
CIRCULAR shape
