Education
I have been learning the violin for about 6 years now. I began learning in High School
through an itinerant lesson programme of about 20mins a week. My teacher was
Helena Sowinski and she taught me right through high school for about 4 years. Last
year, I studied at Otago University doing a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Music. I was
taught by Tessa Peterson. I am now studying at the New Zealand School of Music at
Victoria University after transferring. My teacher here is Martin Riseley. I did all 3 levels
of NCEA music and have done no graded exams.

Musical Achievements
In 2016, my percussion chamber group ‘Stick With It’ won the Southland district round
of the CMNZ competition and competed in the Christchurch regionals. We also won the
KBB award. The following year, my percussion group were awarded the KBB award and
best performance of an NZ work and best performance of a student composition. My
string trio ‘Danse de Trois’ won an adjudicators award.

I was awarded the Alex Lindsey Memorial Scholarship in Violin playing in 2017 which is
awarded to an outstanding violinist in the Southland region. In the same year, I was
Concertmaster of my school’s production orchestra and a featured soloist in our
school’s concert orchestra final concert. I was awarded two trophies at prizegiving. One
for Outstanding Musical Ability and one for Contribution to Music. A few years
beforehand, I was awarded a trophy for Most Improved Musician. At the Southland
Instrumental Competitions that year, I was awarded first place in the violin sections for
under 18 year olds in 2 or 3 categories, and second place for a violin duo.

In 2018, I was awarded outstanding contribution to music at my residence hall ‘St

Margaret’s College’. I was asked to perform at the Otago University Intercollege Awards
Ceremony where I performed alongside a friend a piece of my own arrangement. I was
a member of the Dunedin Youth Orchestra where I played in both the Second Violin and
Percussion section for the whole year. I was also a member of the Kaikorai Metropolitan
Brass Band and St Kilda Brass Band.

This year, I was awarded the Galambos-Winter Violin Scholarship for an outstanding
first year violinist. I was a percussionist in the winning composition at the Lilburn
Composition Competition. I am a percussionist in Hutt City Brass Band and we recently
were awarded first place awards in all categories at the Wellington Regional Brass Band
Competition.

Aspirations
In the future, I aspire to study overseas, possibly in Europe. I intend to get as much
experience and education as I can. I would love to play for orchestras like the NZSO.
However, overseas orchestras would be amazing as well. I would love to do more with
chamber music as connecting with other musicians is important to me.
