Lesson Title: Acting out stories

Subject/Unit: Strategy Demonstration

Purpose (goal of lesson): To retain given information and explain how acting out stories can
help teaching (specifically with ELL students).

Behavioral Objectives (what you want students to accomplish): Have an “ah ha” moment
with understanding how fun it is to learn from this skill.

Time (total time) – (make sure to include time for each activity): (15 minutes)

Materials Needed: Partner and I, slideshow, computer, white board, marker, book, enthusiastic
students, and acting out story handouts.

Anticipatory Set (spark class interest?): With the activities!

Timing Instructional Content (activities – very detailed as if you were writing them
for another teacher to teach! Number your activities – putting the individual
time it will take for each activity – No activity should be longer than 5
minutes!! You will lose your audience’s attention!)
● Introduction to:
○ S1: Us (our names)
■ (Begin to use slideshow from computer)
○ Strategy (definition, ask students how they think they would use acting out stories
in a lesson)
■ (Write down ideas on the whiteboard)
● (Whiteboard, marker, computer, slideshow) 2-3 min
● Show S2 and read on to slide 6
○ S6: read, show the video
● Take a book out, explain to students our current activity, and read a portion of the book.
○ After reading, write down characters for volunteers to choose from.
● (Book, whiteboard, marker) 2-5 min
● Have one of us read again and have volunteers role play
○ As students are acting, one person silently passes out handout.
● (Book, enthusiastic students, handout) 2-5 min
● Show S7 and read slide
○ Bring up about the handout and explain. This will lead to Closure.
● (handout) ~2 min

Timing Closure (end of lesson): Talk about the benefits and positive things about using the
strategy for all kinds of students including ELL. (Creates an involvement within the students,
much more interactive than others (participation), much easier to follow through the story than
just reading) 2-5 min

Assessment (how will you evaluate? know if students reached the objectives?): If involved
or not. Ask them what they learned out of the activity, or just a raise of hands who would enjoy
using this strategy in their future career.

Filler Activity: (what will you do if you get done early?): Ask them more relevant questions
(ex: If they have seen this used before in any class setting) or talk further into the topic (maybe
talk about examples of when used in the past).

Teacher Tips (suggestions that would make lesson go smoothly):

● Follow the rules (all)
● Stay confident, act enthusiastic about what you’re teaching and keep in control of
students attention
