GRAMMAR LESSON PLAN

Level:upper intermediate
Age: 16-17
Materials: pictures

Assumptions: Ss know the prepositions ‘on,in,at,under,in front of,behind’’

OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the students
1) will have covered the meaning of ‘by,beside,near,next to ‘
2) will know the difference between ‘near,by’ and ‘next to ,beside’
3) will tell a place by using these prepositions

WARM-UP
Time: 2-3 minutes
Materials: picture
Interaction: T- Ss
What students do: answering the teacher’s questions
Aims:
- To make Ss wonder the subject.
-To motivate Ss to read the text

STEPS
1) The teacher shows a picture of a cover of a book.Then T asks questions about
it.
2) T asks questions about Ss’ personal experiences

LEAD-IN TO CONTEXT
Time: 3 minutes
Materials: Text
Interaction: T-Ss
What students do:Read the text and then answer the questions on the paper.
Aims:
- To make Ss understand the text generally
- To move into the grammar smoothly

STEPS
1) The teacher asks questions about the reading text “When did the parties
happen?”. Then she asks ‘What did the guests do during the afternoon ?’
2) After that,T writes the answer of the second question.
ELICITATION

A) MEANING
Time: 4 minutes
Materials: Pictures

What students do:Answering the questions
Aims:
- To help Ss infer the meaning by themselves
- To make them speak

STEPS
1) T writes the sentence on the board.Then she asks ‘yes-no’ questions about
the meaning of them.
’They were lying by the shore’.
*Are they far away from the shore?
*Are the close to the shore?
*They are on the sea or around the sea?
‘It is beside the kitchen’
*Is there any room between the kitchen and the hall?
*Are they very close to each other?
‘I was sitting next to the window’.
*Does it mean I was sitting beside the window?

2) After getting answers,T shows pictures and wants Ss to choose the correct
one for the sentence on the board.
B) FORM
Time: 2 minutes
Interaction: Ss-Ss and T- Ss
What students do:Answer the questions
Grouping: by partner
Aims:

- To make Ss infer the form


- To make Ss realize the rules by themselves

STEPS
1) T asks questions about the form of the sentences
2) Ss anwers them and infer the sentence structure

C) FUNCTION
Time: 1 minute
Interaction: Ss-Ss and T-Ss
What students do: pair work and think about the usage of the subject
Grouping: by Partner
Aims:
- To show the usage of the subject in daily life
STEPS
1) T asks the question ‘When do we use these prepositions in our life?’
2) Ss turn to their partners 30 seconds and discuss about it.
3) T gets the answers

RESTRICTED USE ACTIVITY


Time: 3 minutes
Materials: picture and worksheet
Interaction: T-Ss
What students do: Look at the pictures and answer the questions
Aims:
- To make the Ss practice the subject
- To test how much did they know about the subject

STEPS
1)T shows a picture.Ss look at the picture only 30 seconds.
2)T close the pictue and Ss answer the questions.

AUTHENTIC USE ACTIVITY


Time: 3 minutes
Interaction: Ss-Ss
What students do: Work in pairs.One of them is a guest,the other is a student from
Gazi University.The guest asks a place that he wants to go in the school area and
the other tells that place.
Grouping: pair work
Aims:
- To help Ss communicate
- To show ss the subjects they have covered in their daily life

STEPS
1) T tell Ss to work in groups.,
2) One student is a guest and the other is a student in Gazi University.
3) The guest asks a place (e.g library)and the other tell its place by using
‘in,near,by,next to,beside,0n’.

STEPS
1) T asks ‘tell me what you have covered today?’.’Is it necessary for you?’
