Activity
The students will use the online resource “Trading Card
Maker” from the website read write think, to create their own
fictional book character trading cards. Through this activity they
will show their skills of character and story analysis.
To prepare for the activity, the students will have had a
full week to finish reading a book of their choice at their
appropriate reading level. I will have provided in class
independent reading time for the students to accomplish this.
Throughout the week I will have exercises on character analysis
that will include elements needed to complete the trading card.
The exercise will include answering two questions a day that I
provide about their characters, and writing their answers in their
reading journals.
On the day of the activity, I will read a book to the class.
I will ask probing questions about the book’s story elements and
characters. After I finish, I will explain the purpose of trading
cards and how they can be a fun way to share information with
friends. I will pull up the trading card maker app on the
computer and project it onto the white board. I will
demonstrate how to use the app, using the main character from
the book we just read as my example. The students will assist
me in filling out the card. The students will then create their
own cards on the computer, using their book and their reading
journal as resources. I will adjust the length and duration of the
exercise based on the student’s ability. The student’s trading
cards will be assessed for
1) Using Complete Sentences
2) Accuracy- The answers were relevant and
accurate to the book.
3) Completion- All of the elements of the trading
card are completed on the app.
After the card has been completed, it can be printed out for
actual trading with classmates.
