9-12
ES.12 The student will investigate and understand that energy
transfer between the sun and Earth and its atmosphere drives
weather and climate on Earth. Key concepts include a)
observation and collection of weather data; b) prediction of
weather patterns; c) severe weather occurrences, such as
tornadoes, hurricanes, and major storms; and d) weather
phenomena and the factors that affect climate including
radiation, conduction, and convection.
The class will be considered synchronous learning
because the teacher will meet with the student
online for a video conference. This sol strand will
be something that has already begun in a previous
class but the sub-topic for this activity would be
focused on c) severe weather occurrences, such as
tornadoes, hurricanes, and major storms. The
teacher will talk about different severe weather
occurrences with the class. The focus today will be
on tornadoes. The teacher will talk about it and
then share a link with the class to watch a video
on what causes tornadoes. Then the activity that
they will have to do to enhance learning will be to
use a tornado simulation. All the student needs to
do is click on the link that the teacher will provide
for them and start adjusting the funnel width and
speed then press go. After they do that it will ask
them to pick what the EF scale value would be for
the type of damage that it showed. There is other
information on the page with the tornado
simulation that can guide them on the
measurements of the tornado. The teacher should
encourage them to read up on it because to make
 sure that they understand the content there will
be a short quiz on the information they just read
and did a simulation for.
