1. What are the basic principles of prestressed concrete?

Prestressed concrete is basically concrete in which internal stresses of a suitable

magnitude and distribution are introduced so that the stresses resulting from external

loads are counteracted is a designed degree.

 Large prestressing force are applied to the member by the tendons, high bearing stresses

are developed at the ends by the anchoring devices. The anchorages are generally

designed to be meant for use only for high strength concrete work.

 Busting stresses liable to at the ends of the beam cannot be satisfactorily resisted by low

strength concrete work.

 When stress transfer to concrete has to take place by bond action, the concrete should

have a high strength concrete.

 Shrinkage cracks will be very little when high strength concrete is used.

 Due to the high modulus of elasticity of high strength concrete, the elastic and creep

strain are very small resulting in smaller loss of prestress in all steel reinforcement.

2. Distinguish between the terms uniaxial, biaxial and triaxial prestressing.

These terms refer to cases when the concrete is prestressed in only one direction, in two

mutually perpendicular directions and in three mutually perpendicular directions

respectively.

Uniaxial Prestressing

When the prestressing tendons are parallel to one axis, it is called Uniaxial Prestressing.

For example, longitudinal prestressing of beams.

Biaxial Prestressing

When there are prestressing tendons parallel to two axes, it is called Biaxial Prestressing.

Triaxial Prestressing

When the prestressing tendons are parallel to more than two axes, it is called Multiaxial

Prestressing. For example, prestressing of domes.

3. Differentiate (a) concentric and eccentric prestressing (b) full and partial prestressing.

(a) The concentric or axial prestressing members in which the entire cross section of

concrete has a uniform compressive prestress. In this type the centroid of the tendon

coincides with that of the concrete section. Where as in eccentric prestressing is a

section at which the tendons are eccentric to the centroid, resulting in a triangular or

trapezoidal compressive stress distribution. In this form of prestressing, the centroid of

cross-sectional areas of tendons is not located at the centroid of the cross-section. The

distance between the centroid of the cross-section of the concrete member and the center

of gravity of tendons is called as the eccentricity of tendons. Due to this eccentricity, a

moment, whose magnitude is equal to the product of the prestressing force and the

eccentricity, is applied on the concrete cross-section.

prestressing in which tensile stresses are permitted, up to a limited extent, in concrete

under working loads. As the permitted tensile stresses may, under some conditions, crack

the concrete, some untensioned reinforcement is also provided along with tendons.

Where as in full prestressing is a prestressed concrete structural member is said to be

fully prestressed if sufficient prestresses are introduced so that tensile stresses in the

member, everywhere, are completely eliminated.
