New Exchange Archiving Agent: Exchange Mailbox Agent - Early Release Feature
The Exchange Mailbox Agent is a comprehensive solution that incorporates separate archiving and cleanup
operations. You can move mailbox messages to secondary storage and use these messages as an archive copy.
Cleanup jobs create stubs on the production storage. The stubs point to the messages that were moved as part of
the archiving and cleanup operations. The archived messages are available for quick and easy retrieval by
administrators and end users.
With the Exchange Mailbox Agent, content is managed at the user level, rather than at the subclient level. Users are
contained within a single subclient where you can assign discrete Exchange policies at the user, database, and user
group levels. This eliminates the need to manage load balancing across multiple subclients.
Key Features
The Exchange Mailbox Agent is easy to configure because all data is associated with one virtual client, which
makes it simple to scale your data protection system horizontally. As your business needs grow, you can add or
remove physical clients at any time without any disruption.
Metadata (From, To, Subject, receive time, size, and so on) is indexed, which allows you to retrieve data quickly.
Content indexing indexes entire messages.
Multistreaming means that archiving, cleanup, and restore jobs can run in parallel and this increases
throughput. In addition, each job type can run in multiple streams.

Live Sync Replication of Virtual Machines for VMware

9/5/2017 Commvault Systems Page 31 of 98
The Live Sync feature enables incremental replication from a backup of a virtual machine (source VM) to a synced
copy of the virtual machine (destination VM). The Live Sync operation opens the destination VM and applies
changes from the source VM backups since the last sync point. If no new backups have been run since the last Live
Sync, the scheduled Live Sync does not run.
Key Features
Initiate replication automatically after backups or on a scheduled basis (for example, daily or once a week),
without requiring any additional action from users.
Minimize the impact on production systems by using backup data for replications, avoiding the need to read
the source VM again for replication.
Copy backup data to remote disaster recovery (DR) sites with deduplication to minimize wide area network
(WAN) traffic, and run Live Sync at the DR site.
In cases where corruption on the source VM is replicated to the destination VM, users can still recover a point-
in-time version of the source VM from older backups.
Service Pack 2 provided the following enhancements:
Failover orchestration: Run automated workflows to test boot virtual machines, perform a planned failover, or
perform an unplanned failover.
IP address configuration for destination virtual machines:
For source virtual machines running Windows that use static IP addresses, you can configure destination
network IP addresses using DHCP or static IP addresses.
Run an immediate Live Sync operation for virtual machines that have unapplied changes from recent
backups.
Enhanced reporting: Run a Job Summary Report with the Live Sync option to generate a report for replication
jobs.
Improved error handling:
If the result of a Live Sync job cannot be validated, the destination virtual machine automatically reverts to
the last valid state for the virtual machine.
Live Sync jobs are automatically failed after three attempts, enabling a new job to start after issues are
resolved.
After three unsuccessful retries, Live Sync is disabled for virtual machines that cannot be successfully
synced.
Service Pack 3 provided the following enhancements:
Failback capability for virtual machines that have been failed over to a secondary site. You can fail back to the
original primary site or to a new site. This operation ensures that any incremental updates from the secondary
site are replicated back to the primary site.
You can replicate virtual machines to vCloud as well as to a vCenter. When replicating to vCloud, you can specify
the organization, virtual data center (vDC), vApp name, and vApp owner.
New reports for failover and failback operations.
New Status field to show failover and failback status in the Live Sync Monitor.
Live Sync information added to the Health Report.
Service Pack 4 provides the following enhancement:
You can configure a schedule for backing up virtual machines that have failed over to a secondary site. Backups
of destination VMs support failback operations.
Applicable Agents
Virtual Server Agent for VMware
Licenses

Setup Requirements
Live Sync is supported for virtual machines using hardware version 7 or later.
To add virtual machines to the Live Sync schedule, the virtual machines must have been backed up at least
once.
Live Sync can be used to replicate virtual machines from a streaming backup, auxiliary copy, or backup copy.
You cannot replicate virtual machines from IntelliSnap backups.
9/5/2017 Commvault Systems Page 32 of 98
To support failover and failback operations, perform the following tasks:
The workflow engine must be installed with the CommServe system.
Create the allowToolsToExecuteOnServerOrClient additional setting on the CommServe node with the value 7
(category EventManager and type Integer).
Virtual machines included in a failover operation must have been replicated at least once, and must have a
status of In Sync, Needs Sync, or Failover Failed.
Virtual machines included in a failback operation must have a status of Failover Complete or Failback Failed.

Support for VMware Virtual Volume (VVol) - Early Release Feature

VMware Virtual Volumes (VVols) provide a logical view of virtual machine storage. The Virtual Server Agent (VSA)
supports IntelliSnap backups with VVol for any hardware storage arrays that provide VVol support, as well as
IntelliSnap backups for virtual machines that reside on Virtual SAN (VSAN) storage that includes VVols.
The VSA leverages VMware software snapshots to perform more efficient and granular IntelliSnap backups of VVols
that are associated with a virtual machine. By using a software snapshot, the VSA reads data directly from storage
and limits the data captured in the snapshot to the data for the targeted virtual machine. Backup, backup copy,
retention, revert, browse, and VM recovery operations can address storage for each virtual machine, eliminating
the need to create and manage snapshots for each datastore that contains virtual machine data.

Dynamic Load Balancing and Throttling for Virtual Machine Backups

The Virtual Server Agent (VSA) dynamically distributes virtual machines for backup across available VSA proxies, at
the beginning of the backup job and while the backup is running. When a backup operation starts, the first VSA
proxy listed for the Virtual Server instance acts as a coordinator, controlling traffic for backups across all proxies.
Key Features
Dynamic distribution improves performance, enhances scalability, and ensures fault tolerance for backup
operations by providing the following functions:
Better coordination across multiple jobs or large numbers of subclients
Adaptive dispatch logic
Load balancing across the backup infrastructure
Throttling for proxies and datastores
Improved failover in the event that a proxy or coordinator becomes unavailable

Virtual Server Licenses for Virtual Machines or Sockets

New Virtual Server licenses enable you to protect virtual machines on a per-VM basis or on a CPU socket basis.
The Protected Virtual Machines and CPU Sockets on Hypervisor Hosts licenses provide alternative methods of
virtual machine licensing.
With the Protected Virtual Machines license, licensing is enforced based on the number of VMs protected.
With the CPU Sockets on Hypervisor Hosts license, licensing is enforced based on the number of CPU sockets
in use on physical hypervisor servers configured with the Virtual Server Agent.
If you apply either of these licenses on a CommCell environment monitored by capacity licenses, Virtual Server
Agent jobs will not count towards capacity, causing the capacity usage to decrease.

Live Mount of Virtual Machines

The Live Mount feature enables you to run a virtual machine directly from a stored backup. You can use this feature
to validate that backups are usable for a disaster recovery scenario, to validate the content on the backup, or to
access data from the virtual machine directly instead of restoring guest files.
Virtual machines that are live mounted are intended for short-term usage and should not be used for production;
changes to live mounted VMs or their data are not retained when the virtual machine expires. The VM expiration
period is set through a VM Lifecycle Management policy.
Applicable Agents
Virtual Server Agent for VMware
Licenses

Setup Requirements
Requires vCenter 5.x or 6.0.
Perform a Refresh Datacenters operation on the VMware instance:
Under Client Computers > virtualization_client > Virtual Server, right-click VMware, point to All Tasks, and
then click Refresh Datacenters. In the Refresh Datacenters dialog box, the Refresh VM Status and Discover
VMs check boxes are not required for Live Mount; ensure that those check boxes are cleared and click OK.

Define a Live Mount provisioning policy to limit the impact that live mount operations can have on the
operating environment. See Creating a Provisioning Policy for Live Mount .
The virtual machine owner or the user group associated with the VM owner (client computer) must have
Browse and Live Browse permissions assigned. See User Administration and Security - Getting Started .
The vCenter user account must have permissions set as described in Permissions for Custom User Accounts ,
including Virtual Machine > Interaction > Device connection as well as all permissions for streaming backups
and restores.
If a firewall is used, provide settings as described in Entering Required Firewall Settings .

Live Recovery for Virtual Machines

The Live Recovery feature enables virtual machines (VMs) to be recovered and powered on from a backup without
waiting for a full restore of the VM. This feature can be used to recover a VM that has failed and needs to be placed
back in production quickly, or to validate that a backup can be used in a disaster recovery scenario.
Applicable Agents
Virtual Server Agent for VMware
IntelliSnap for VMware
Licenses
Virtual Server (for streaming backups)
Hardware Snapshot Enabler (for IntelliSnap)
Setup Requirements
Live VM recovery is supported for recovery from:
Streaming backups and backup copies using magnetic disk libraries
IntelliSnap backups using NetApp snapshot engines
Live VM recovery is not supported for:
Backups to tape libraries
Archived VMs
Multiple VM restores
Simultaneous live recovery and live browse operations for the same virtual machine
The Live Recovery for Virtual Machines feature requires Version 5.x or 6.0 for vCenter and ESX.
The user performing the live recovery operation must be an owner of the virtualization client and VSA proxy
used for the operation. For more information, see Ownership and Permissions Needed for Virtual Machine
Recovery .
The vCenter user account must have permissions set as described in Permissions for Custom User Accounts .
The ESX server that is used to mount the NFS datastore for the browse and restore must be able to resolve the
MediaAgent (which uses 3DFS components to perform the live recovery). To ensure connectivity, create a host
file entry for the MediaAgent on the ESX server.
If a File Recovery Enabler for Linux is configured as described in Deploy a Virtual Machine for UNIX-Based File
Restores and the default File Recovery Enabler is configured for the instance, the restore will use the default
File Recovery Enabler for Linux for the live recovery operation. Otherwise, the MediaAgent that performed the
backup is used.
The same requirements that apply to a MediaAgent also apply to a File Recovery Enabler when it is used for live
recovery.

Block-Level Browse for VM File Recovery

With block-level browse, users can browse and recover files without requiring metadata collection during backup.
This feature uses a block-level driver to mount a pseudo disk for browse and restore operations. For Windows VMs,
the pseudo disk is mounted on a MediaAgent. For Linux VMs, the pseudo disk is mounted on a File Recovery Enabler
for Linux. The browse and restore is then performed from the pseudo disk. The pseudo disk provides file system
information so that browse and restore operations can read directly from stored backup data, without relying on
content indexing.
Block-level browse replaces 3DFS Live Browse as the underlying mechanism for Live Browse and Live File Recovery.
Block-level browse is supported from streaming backups, auxiliary copies, and backup copies. It is not supported
from IntelliSnap backups.
Service Pack 5 extends block-level browse support to all hypervisors that are supported by the Virtual Server Agent.

Optimized Replication for OSDP C-Mode
Optimized Replication for OSDP C-Mode delivers a much more efficient and less time consuming method of
replication than reading the entire source volume. The feature achieves this efficiency by using a driver that
monitors the source volume continuously to determine which blocks have changed. Then, only the changed blocks
are replicated.
Optimized Replication for OSDP C-Mode applies to UNIX and Windows file system volumes that are replicated to a
NetApp C-Mode filer.

NFS Object Store provides an NFS interface to the Commvault Content Store so that users can protect and recover
their data by using native NFS client software.
NFS ObjectStore does not require a dedicated Commvault Data Agent package on clients. NFS shares are mounted
on clients and then become part of the file system namespace and are accessible to applications through the native
file system interface. Applications can seamlessly access their data directly from the backup media.
NFS ObjectStore can support powerful use cases, for example running SQL queries on database backups without
actually recovering entire database.
Key Features
Provides a native NFS interface for users.
No additional software required on the NFS clients.
Supports multiple versions of files.
Setup Requirements
The following components comprise an NFS ObjectStore system:
A CommServe server.
A Linux MediaAgent with the NFS ObjectStore software. The NFS ObjectStore software runs the service that
provides an NFS server that interfaces with the ContentStore. A configured disk cache provides quick access to
recently used data.
An Analytics Engine. This can be located on the same machine as the CommServe, or on a different machine.
This is automatically installed with the MediaAgent on Windows machines.
A backup MediaAgent. You can install the MediaAgent on the same machine as NFS ObjectStore, or a different
machine.
NFS Clients. NFS Clients are any machines that can mount an NFSv3 or NFSv4 share.
Note: A minimal server installation requires one Windows computer for the CommServe software and for the Index
Server, and another computer for the NFS ObjectStore software.

The capabilities assigned to a user group are
converted into a role. The naming convention for a
converted role is userGroupName_Role.
Predefined roles
These are system-created roles that represent typical
security needs and can be customized by the
administrator, for example, the Compliance role.
There are new XML templates for use on the command
line. However, there is support for backward
compatibility for the old XML templates. If old XML
templates are used, roles are automatically created using
the same naming convention as used for converted roles:
userGroupName_Role.

Virtual Server Agent With Service Pack 7, the Virtual Server Agent includes v11 SP7 VDDK Support for the
(VMware) VDDK 6.0.2 and VDDK 6.5, and loads the appropriate Virtual Server Agent
VDDK as required when the vCenter version is
identified.
Virtual Server Agent The Select VM Client Group option on the Advanced v11 SP5 Overview of Smart Client

To achieve the same result, create a smart client group
with the rule Clients discovered using VSA Subclient.
Perform a Refresh to update the client group after
adding this rule, or after discovering virtual machines
while performing a backup.
Virtual Server Agent By default, VSA proxies use LZO compression for v11 SP4 Data Compression for
(all hypervisors) storage policies created in V11 SP4 or later. Prior to VSA
SP4, VSA storage policies use GZIP compression.
Virtual Server Agent The upgrade to v11 Service Pack 4 includes .NET v11 SP4 Preinstallation Checklist
(all hypervisors) framework 4.5 (for Windows machines) and the latest for the Virtual Server
VDDK driver (for VMware). You must reboot machines Agent on Windows
where the Virtual Server Agent is installed after these
components are installed.

Virtual Server Agent The Protected Virtual Machines and CPU Sockets on v11 License Requirements
(all hypervisors) Hypervisor Hosts licenses are now enforced for virtual
machine licensing.
With the Protected Virtual Machines license,
licensing is enforced based on the number of VMs
protected.
With the CPU Sockets on Hypervisor Hosts
license, licensing is enforced based on the number
of CPU sockets in use on physical hypervisor
servers configured with the Virtual Server Agent.
If you apply either of these licenses on a CommCell
environment monitored by capacity licenses, Virtual
Server Agent jobs will not count towards capacity,
causing the capacity usage to decrease.
Virtual Server Agent With v11 Service Pack 4, the Enable Granular v11 SP4 Metadata Collection,
(VMware) Recovery option in Advanced Backup Options is no Granular Recovery, and
longer selected by default for streaming backups, Live Browse
including IntelliSnap backup copies. This change
applies to new backups or backup schedules created in
SP4 or later. VMware now uses block level browse to
get file and folder information when metadata is not
collected.
Virtual Server Agent By default, V11 uses short names for virtual machine v11 bUseIndexNameForVMDK
(VMware) disk (VMDK) files, while V10 used full names. After
upgrading a Virtual Server Agent (VSA) proxy,
MediaAgent, or 3dfs server to V11, you must create the
bUseIndexNameForVMDK additional setting to
support backward compatibility:
Configure this setting on the 3dfs server or
MediaAgent if the 3dfs server or MediaAgent is
running V10 and the VSA proxy has been upgraded
to V11.
Configure this setting on the VSA proxy and 3dfs
server or MediaAgent if the VSA proxy is running
V10 and the 3dfs server or MediaAgent has been
upgraded to V11.
If both the VSA proxy and the 3dfs server or
MediaAgent are running V10, the additional setting is
only required if you encounter issues with long VMDK
names.
Virtual Server Agent After upgrading a VSA proxy to V11, Live Browse v11 Live File Recovery
(VMware) operations on ext4 file systems will, by default, start
3dfs services on the MediaAgent that performed the
backup rather than on a File Recovery Enabler for
Linux. This is different behavior than in V10, where a
File Recovery Enabler would be used if one was
configured.
Virtual Server Agent For full virtual machine restores, the Register Virtual v11 Restoring Full Virtual
(Hyper-V) Machine with Failover Cluster option is now available Machines
in the Settings dialog box when you click Configure
from the Restore Options dialog box.
Previously, the option was available in the Restore
Options dialog box.
