James Alexander Abrahams
Nationality: British
I have just finished a degree in Physics with Philosophy. Physics at Manchester was insanely
awesome but I'm definitely no physicist. The study of the way that science shapes society and the
philosophy and justification of it interested me way more and unfortunately there wasn't a great deal
of that in the course. I'm quite happy to actually let someone else actually calculate the path
integrals.
This general attitude spills over into what I'm trying to achieve with this course. I'm very interested
in the world of technology, the web and what the register called Web2.0rhea whilst not actually
knowing how to code anything myself, I'm happy to let others do it. So I will be researching in how
Web 2.0 concepts can influence how churches connect and communicate within themselves and how
that can change aspects of church life (such as control).
I'm a committed Christian and attend a church in Rusholme and so have a amateur interest in theology and the philosophy of
religion. This idea came from my gap year where I worked in a suburban church focusing on youth work but dipping into
working in most areas of the church. This is where I was part of a team that built the precursor to my future product.
In my free time I'm essentially a gamer. I'm fed up with reading fiction ever since coming to the realisation that Asimov is
dead and is never going to complete the 4 part robots trilogy. So instead I get that area of art from games, particularly PC
games and more RPGs and strategy games. Since 12 I've been interested in massively multiplayer games and general how
online communities work but unfortunately don't have the time for them anymore. I also have a passing interest in stand up
comedy with Stuart Lee being my favourite since his BBC show.
So essentially I'm a geek! I'm currently searching for new music to get into but I would label my music tastes as generally
euphoric I think. So recently I have gotten into the cheesy end of trance and some psy-trance alongside trip hop whilst I used
to be a drummer in a Christian Extreme Metal band. I tended to be into the more cheesy end of Metal (Nightwish, Maiden etc).
I'm into DC not Marvel.
Sharifa Al Harthy

Sharifa Al Harthy is senior Research Analyst at policy and studies department at the research council
of Oman, currently she is program director of Educational Innovation assistance program and acting
as a Research Area Manager in Education and Human Resource Sector in the Research Council. She
received her masters degree from Huddersfield University in Human Resource Development. She
worked as a research assistant where she contributed on building a promoting The Science and
Technology strategy for the Sultanate of Oman and the administration structure of the research
council. In addition she contributes in Developing and initiating several projects such as Educational
Innovation assistance program. Community Innovation assistance program, Academic Innovation
assistance program and National University students eco-house competition. She worked as Deputy
Director for Applied Science Directorate at Ministry of Education. She contributed as a key member in

I was born in Amman-Jordan. I am a M.Sc holder in Business Information Technology from The Uni-
versity of Manchester, Manchester Business School) since 2008. I also hold B.Sc. in Computer Infor-
mation Systems from Al-Ahliyya Amman University since 2006. I am a Lecturer at Princess Rahma
College, Al-Balqa Applied University, Jordan. I did my undergraduate project in E-Voting which was
designed for the Jordanian government. E-Voting project enables citizens to vote in the Jordanian Par-
liament Election through the Internet. This web project was designed using ASP.Net program language.
The project was graded with (90%). My postgraduate dissertation was about E-Government Services
in Jordan. The dissertation was investigating the reasons behind the lack of citizens’ access to EGov-
ernment Services in Jordan. The dissertation was graded with (Merit). I have certificates of excellence
in Visual Basic, ADO, and ASP.Net. I have 2 years of work experience in teaching and researching in
the areas of Information Technology & EGovernment. My areas of interest are E-Government, E-
Services, Web2.0, and Knowledge Management. I enjoy a variety of sports in particular football, table tennis, squash, and
swimming. I also enjoy travelling and learning different cultures and languages. I am looking forward to be an expert in the
field of e-government, help governments in the developing countries to implement their e-government programs successfully.
Mirta Amalia
Nationality: Indonesian
I was a telecommunication consultant with four years experience working in a multinational
telecommunication service company. I was previously trained as a software engineer and hold a
Masters degree with distinction in Management and Information Systems from a UK leading
development policy and management institute. I have developed an interest in research on the links
between knowledge management and innovations. My research interests has brought me to start
thinking about publishing in this area. I enjoy travelling and watching sports such as football
(though I do not have a favourite team), men's tennis (I hope to one day have the opportunity to
watch the Wimbledon Men’s singles Final(, formula 1, motogp and basketball. In the end, I am
someone who is eager to learn and grow, and at the same enjoy every moment.
Adeela Amjad
Nationality: Pakistan
Having done my bachelors in Electrical Engineering and then Masters in Business Administration
from my home country, getting an education in an international setting is still a dream to me.
MBS remains the first choice for many Asian students like me aspiring to get a foreign degree.
As I am interested in developing my research skills before I consider a PhD, Mres seems to be a
tailor-made program for me.
When I envisions myself in five years from now, I imagine myself as a faculty member of a
leading business school or working hard to expand my own fledging business. The most I expect
to have is both of my dreams getting fulfilled side by side. I hope MBS will help me achieve my
dreams.
Susel Arzuaga Palomino
Nationality: Cuban
Alumni from MBS with an MSc in Corporate Communications and Reputation Manager. I was a
research assistant during the programme with the topic ‘Social Networks at work: ethical issues
and practical implications.’ My dissertation ‘Employee engagement, turnover and performance:
improving employee effectiveness through strategic management’ was a demanding and satis-
factory project awarded with 92% as a final mark. I did my undergrad in Journalism and Corpo-
rate Communications an the University of Havana.
After I graduated in 2003 I was corporate communications assistant in several Cuban companies
and simultaneously, in 2007 I started teaching at the School of Communications in Havana.
Throughout my student and professional life I’ve collaborated with social projects in my home
country such as environmental campaigns, public health issues and community education.
I'm passionate about research—micro foundations, multi-level analysis and employee communications being my favourite top-
ics—but I also enjoy an active life outside of academia. I love dancing, salsa above all, cooking and doing sports, not that I'm
that good at any in particular! I have a serious reading addiction and a dream to become a
professor in a research orientated university where I can combine teaching and investigation.
Yamileh Garcia Belen
Nationality: Dominican Republic
Master in Finance and Economics from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom, in
2009. I have worked at the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic (CBDR) since 2006,
where currently I occupy the position of Technical Coordinator of the Foreign Exchange
Reserves Management Department. At the CBDR, I have also been responsible for the Risk
Management Area, and have been able to participate in various training programs with the
World Bank Treasury, in subjects

related to risk management, financial quantitative analysis, and strategic asset allocation. After obtaining my Bachelors
Degree in Economics, at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) of Santo Domingo in 2006, I have
participated in a Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics, at the Instituto Tecnico de Santo Domingo (INTEC).
During my undergraduate studies, I participated as Vice-President and Academic Affairs Chairperson of the Economics
Students Committee at PUCMM. Later on, during my MSc studies in Manchester, I was able to join the Rotaract International
Club of Manchester, as Professional Development Chairperson.
In my free time, I enjoy cooking, good poetry and literature reading, travelling, exercising, and scuba diving in warm waters!
My PhD research topic adopts an inter-disciplinary approach that combines the empirical corporate finance framework with the
analysis of international capital markets to shed more light on the understanding of risk-management decisions of large
financial corporations. Further, it aims to understand the impact of financial firms’ risk-taking behaviour to non-financial firms
investment ability. Working in a vibrant environment such as the Accounting and Finance Division at MBS will certainly help
me in developing my research at highly competitive standards, while allowing me to pursue my aspirations to influence
actively in a policy-making institution, in my country or abroad.
Kimberly Cartwright
Nationality: British
My name is Jo and I have been a student at MBS for the past 4 years. For my undergraduate degree I did a BSc (hons)
Management and for my masters I did an MSc Human Resource Management + Industrial Relations.
In my time away from education I worked as a supervisor in a local pub restaurant (my gap year) and as a manager at a large
sports retailer—both of which motivated me to follow a career in the academic route as opposed to the private sector.
Many of my hobbies have had to be put on hold somewhat during university but I enjoy keeping fit at the gym, swimming,
horse riding, taking the family dogs for along walk, mountain climbing and badminton.
Many of my aspirations centre around travelling, one day I hope to see the world i.e. Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, South
America, South Africa and many more. I hope to go to some of these countries next summer.
I am quite a family orientated person which is part of the reason I chose to do my PhD at Manchester Business School—my
family live 20 miles south of Manchester so much of my weekends are spent there.
Ceray Ceylan

After a six year public administration education in Turkey, I came to the UK and did my MPA
(Master of Public Administration) in MBS. I did the MPA programme because it really looked like
what I wanted to do. During the MPA, I realised, that I can explore further things in MBS with
its great academic staff and atmosphere. Then I am her, with the people who have already
known that knowledge is power.
I believe that today, politics and public administration are two inherent subjects and during my
MPA programme, I learnt this to be true. For this reason I would like to search how political
dynamics, such as military, religion and international relations can affect the policy making
process.
Taking photos, reading and travelling are my favourite things especially when I do them with
my friends.

I received my B.Sc in Electronic Information Engineering in 2008 from Xi’an University of Technol-
ogy. I completed my MSc Study in Data Communications, Electronic and Electrical Engineering,
University of Sheffield and will receive this Msc degree in November 2010.
I am a person with nice personality and wide range of interest. In my spare time, I like singing,
yoga, badminton, cooking, jogging, Pilates, reading and aerobics.
Sean Chung

My aspiration is to establish my career and continue to work/lecture in academia in the long
term. I have worked in academia for approximately 6 years to date, with a mix of other work
experiences in family business, the private and public sectors over the years. I have also had
the opportunity to study in the US, the Caribbean, and Hong Kong and now the UK. I look for-
ward to building on those past experiences that have certainly contributed to the person I am
today. I enjoy meeting people of different cultural backgrounds and spending lots of time out-
doors with my family.
Ilma Nur Chowdhury
Nationality: Bangladeshi
I graduated from Manchester Business School from the MSc Marketing programme in 2009. I completed
my BBA from the Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka. The earliest memory I have
regarding the realization that I want to pursue a career in academia was when I was in grade five. I
guess my mother had a lot to do with it because she was a teacher herself. My MSc experience at
Manchester further reinforced my interest in research in the marketing field. During my undergraduate
years, I worked part-time in consultancy companies such as E.Gen Consultants and also taught GED and
IELTS English at various test preparation centres. I completed the City and Guilds International Diploma
course on Teaching and Training in 2006. I was also a member of UNFPA National Youth Forum
which works towards raising awareness about adolescent reproductive health in Bangladesh. I was
awarded the “Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship” by Zonta International in my third
year at university. I was the valedictorian of my class and I joined the Brands and Development function
of Unilever Bangladesh upon graduation. I worked in Unilever for over a year and I was the brand
manager for Vim, Surf Excel and Rexona (Sure). The experience has been invaluable in helping me
understand key management processes and brand-building strategies, gain consumer insights and learn about the application of
market research data. I joined the Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka as a Lecturer in January 2010. Before
that, I worked as a Research Associate in the Investment Climate Research Cell at North South University Business School,
Bangladesh. During my three month stint, I assisted in the implementation of the Academic Partnership Program between North
South and International Finance Corporation, World Bank. The MBS PhD studentship has provided me an opportunity to increase
my career potential and do what I love at the same time. I developed my interest in Services Marketing and Business-to-Business
Marketing during my MSc and hence my doctoral research represents an overlap of both areas. On the personal front, I am
married to a businessman whose company manufactures aluminium ladders in Bangladesh and who is currently enrolled in the
MSc Supply Chain and Operations Management programme at Nottingham University Business School. I love reading, watching
movies and spending time with my family, especially with my three nieces and two nephews.
Ben Dehe
Nationality: French
I came over to Manchester to study a Msc in Operations Management. Since January 2010, I
have started a Knowledge Transfer Partnership project between MBS and NHS Bradford, looking
at the new healthcare facilities planning and development in Bradford district. This project is
enhancing my enthusiasm to undertake further research. Prior this, I first graduated from Aix-
en-Provence University (France) in Logistics and Transport Management. I then pursued in Sup-
ply Chain Management in the University of Huddersfield. Before joining MBS, my main work ex-
periences were in the automotive industry. I worked for Renault and Rolls-Royce Motor cars as
Logistics and Production planner. However, my interest has now shifted toward the service sec-
tor and particularly the implementation of quality programmes within healthcare.
Fani Dima
Nationality: Greek
I was born in Corinthos, a small town about an hour from Athens. I was lucky to spend my
childhood in a traditional Greek family where I had the attention of my parents, brother and
grandparents. I spent a lot of time in nature, playing in the fields; something I really miss
nowadays.
I always had very influential people in my life; from my parents to my teachers. As a teenager,
they helped me realise how important it is to me to contribute to society. My first attempt was
when I joined the environmental group of my school and participated in the forestations of
many areas of Corinthos.
When I graduated from High School in 2001 I moved to Athens to study Economics in the
National University of Athens. During my studies I developed my interest in the sociological
aspects of economics and management as well as my interest in IT.
After graduating from the University, I knew I wanted to continue my studies towards an MSc
relevant to my interests. However, I decided to work for one year before I apply so I can re-
search in depth the institutions and the programs that I wanted to apply for.
In September 2007 I started my MSc in Information Technology, Management and Organisational Change studies in Lancaster
University. I was overwhelmed by the educational system of Britain which is so different from the one in Greece. I was getting
introduced to the latest theories and management ideas and I was encouraged to develop critical thinking.
During the two years between my graduation from MSc and my PhD application, I worked as an ERP Consultant for Microsoft’s
ERP for SME’s called Dynamics NAV. Through that position I gained very valuable market related and training experience. I
was interacting with clients from a few different areas and I was running some of the end user training sessions.
Partly because of the fulfilment I felt working in an environment that supported intellectual motivation and partly because of
my personal interest in contributing in the progress of our society, I decided to seek the opportunity to follow a research-
based career.

Adrienne Foos
Nationality: American
Adrienne Foos graduated in 2006 with a BA in Philosophy from the State University of New York at
Geneseo and in 2010 with an MBA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. She has worked for the
last year as a graduate assistant on such topics as collaboration and innovation in social media,
customer perceptions of value in electronic retailing and commercialising in virtual worlds.
She looks forward to continuing her research on internet marketing. Adrienne aspires to work in
academia through researching, publishing and teaching upon successful completion of Manchester
Business School’s postgraduate research programme.
Adrienne is excited to move to Manchester from Rochester, NY. Living as an international student and
immersing herself in a new culture will be a great experience. Extra-curricular activities include a
lifelong passion for horse riding. Adrienne hopes to continue her riding in the UK and looks forward to
connecting with other students who love horses. She also enjoys reading, music and walking her three
dogs.
Sebastian Forkmann
Nationality: German
Sebastian Forkmann received degrees in Management, Business Administration and Marketing
form Universities in England, Germany and the United States. Both the curriculum he completed
during his Master's program at Clemson University, as well as the research he conducted there
and the resulting publications were the basis for his decision to continue pursuing a path in
academia. In addition to his passion for scholastic research, Sebastian has consistently applied
marketing principals and concepts in a professional setting; most recently in the form of a
market research project for the automotive industry. Furthermore, Sebastian co-founded an
early technology start-up in South Carolina that provides software solutions for higher education,
which he saw grow from its early stages as a competitor in the New Venture Championship at
the University of Oregon to its participation in a local incubator program. Sebastian is enjoying
the practical experience from this venture and has shared his background with local students as
a guest lecturer on Entrepreneurship at the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina.
Outside of school and work, Sebastian enjoys reading, soccer and the outdoors, and is eager to explore more of what
Manchester has to offer.
Studying at the Manchester Business School presents a significant opportunity for Sebastian to further his goal of becoming a
scholar in business and management and continue making meaningful contributions by addressing relevant issues for

Sara Guediri

I completed the first two years of my BSc Psychology in my home country Germany,
at the University of Hamburg. As I am originally from Berlin, and wanted the
experience of living and studying in a different country, I decided to transfer to
another city with a great reputation, and so completed the final year of my
undergraduate degree in Manchester at the Metropolitan University. During my time at
MMU I developed a keen interest in Occupational and Organisational Psychology, and
as I enjoyed living in Manchester so much I was thrilled when I was offered a place on
the MSc in Organisational Psychology at Manchester Business School, which I
completed in autumn 2009. Throughout the course, I found the area of safety culture
and safety management particularly interesting. My Masters dissertation focused on the effect of leadership style on
organisational safety climate and safety behaviour. I thoroughly enjoyed the research process during my MSc project, and am
now looking forward to continue with this in my PhD studies. For this, I will examine how different leadership styles and
interactions between co-workers can shape the value of safety within an organisation.
I am a huge fan of music and so love going to different gigs around the city. I am also a keen runner, an avid cinema-goer,
and have a reputation amongst my friends for baking lovely cakes and muffins!

When I was a child, I had a dream that someday I would become a teacher. And here I am now,
being a teacher and pursuing my doctoral degree. After I graduated from my Bachelors Degree in
Architecture I worked at a property company as an architect for about three and a half years. I
realised that I still needed more knowledge in the Managerial field and took my masters degree
at Prasetiya Mulya Business School, Jakarta, Indonesia. My next occupation after finishing my
masters degree was as a marketer at a fast moving consumer goods company. I worked there for
almost four years and then decided to move into education to pursue my dream as a teacher.
Since 2006 I have been working as a faculty member at the Prasetiya Mulya Business School in
the Human Resources and Organisation Department. Being a teacher is more exiting that I have
ever thought before. Gaining new insights and knowledge, improving my personal skills, obtaining a great opportunity to study
further and having more friends, are some of the things I can get by becoming a lecturer.
I teach both undergraduate and graduate students and also non-degree students (executive development programs, in house
training program and so on). Each type of student has distinct characteristics that require specific teaching methods. On the
other side, however, these make my life more colourful and exiting.
I also had been assigned as a full time MBA program Manager since 2007—2010 along with my main job as a lecturer. My
responsibility is to make sure the quality process of Full time MBA program and to manage and develop academic systems of
the program. In my daily activities I have to resolve students’ academic and personal affairs problems by conducting
consultation or counselling sessions.
During my spare time, besides reading and listening to jazz music, I also like to paint dogs and sceneries using acrylic paint on
canvas. Someday, I want to learn about impressionist painting as my interest to express my passion in arts.
Knowledge has become a very important determinant to make people survive and achieve goals. Therefore, I am pursuing
higher knowledge by studying my doctoral degree now. I also have interest in knowledge management field of study, in
Jennefer Hart
Nationality: British
Jennefer Hart has most recently been working as a research assistant within the Design Group at
the Open University. She has been there for one year working on a JISC funded research project
entitled ‘ATELIER-D’ which aimed to create an online learning and teaching environment to support
design education. The project explored the potential use a variety of different web 2.0 technologies
that could augment the core characteristics found within the traditional face-2-face design studio or
‘atelier’. Jennefer recently completed and MRes in Human Computer Interaction at Lancaster
University and also holds and MSc in Information Technology from the University of West England.
Prior to this she graduated with a BSc in Textile Design from Huddersfield University and worked for
over 15 years as a Design Manager within the Textile and Garment industry where she gained a
deep understanding of the design process. She also completed a PGCE within Art and Design when she became interested in
the use of technology to support Design Education.
Her past research involved the evaluation of social networks and user experience, location-based gaming and understanding
collaborative learning. Recent conference papers include NordiCHI (October 2008) and ACM CHI (April 2009). Her PhD focuses
upon evaluating user experience and user engagement within interactive technologies with the view to gain a deeper
understanding that can inform the design process.

Nor Farina Israel
Nationality: Malaysian
My name is Nor Farina Israel and come from Malaysia. I am married and currently pursuing my
postgraduate Research programme under the supervision of Dr. Judy Zolkiewski and Dr. Jamie Burton.
Before this I have worked for 16 years at a telecommunication company in Malaysia and served different
industries namely the banking and finance, retail, hospitality and transportation. A good exposure which
eventually made me decide to work on my current proposed topic or research.
I love travelling and am taking this opportunity to study as well as travel Europe during my free time. I do
listen to music as to be in touch with the younger generation but my favourites are mostly R + B songs,
some classical and Malaysian local songs. Watching movies is a family affair back home and our latest was Salt and Inception.
Above 40 and still studying? I took my master degree part time and it was sure hectic but I truly enjoyed studying. With the
support from my family, I hope to achieve my dream of holding a PhD and to inspire my daughter to continue learning. After
all life is a cycle of continuous learning and never forget to share your knowledge with people.
Andrew Jervis
Nationality: British
Hello. I'm Andy. I'm originally from the Isle of Man, went to school in Yorkshire and USA and
then undertook my undergraduate BA at Lancaster University in Management and
Organisation. After graduating from Lancaster in 2006 I worked for a Isle of Man based bank
(Conister Trust PLC) for 18 months before travelling around Australasia and South East Asia
for 9 months. Upon my return at the end of 2008 I set up my current company Jerverd Ltd.
Through Jerverd Ltd I have created a couple of web based businesses—Quickhubs.com and
urcar,com.
Outside of work and education I love sports. Football, golf, running and the gym are my big
favourites but I like to give most a try. I also love travelling and backpacking—just throwing on a rucksack with a few clothes
and a toothbrush and not quite knowing where I will end up or what will happen is a dream holiday. As well as travel and sports
I like cooking, playing my guitar and you’ll find me stumbling around Glastonbury each summer.
My aspirations are to take my business to the next level and have fun and freedom along the way. Obviously as I've found out
over the past couple of years this doesn't come easy and this is one of the reasons I've gone for the MEnt. In joining the MEnt I
hope to enhance my business acumen and entrepreneurial skills and am looking forward to working with other like minded
people.
Evgeny Klochikhin
Nationality: Russian
I was born in Tambov, Russia, which is about 500 km from Moscow. In 1992 I entered Tambov
classical gymnasium and finished it in 2002 with golden medal (first-class certificate). The
school gave me quality knowledge of English, French, History and Literature as well as Maths
and Chemistry. At the same time I attended piano classes at Music school where I was laureate
of several regional contests. I also participated in theatre activities taking roles in various plays.
In 2002 I left Tambov to enter one of the most prestigious and elite Russian Universities—
Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO-University) - to study international
relations. At MGIMO I have become BA in Regional Studies specialising in Northern Europe with
a good knowledge of Finnish, English and French as well as politics, economics, international
relations and history.
In 2006 I continued my studies and two years later got first-class MA in International Relations with a medal for academic
excellence (all A student). In 2008 I joined postgraduate course at MGIMO studying political aspects of innovation more deeply.

In July 2009 I joined the press office of the president of European Jewish Congress.
In my career I have already realised several international projects including corporation projects between MGIMO and State
University of New York, MGIMO and George Washington University, and others. As part of EJC President PR team, I was
successful in prompting several big events including Third International Holocaust remembrance Forum “Let my people Live!”
in Krakow, Poland, and meetings of International Luxembourg Forum on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe.
I am extremely glad to have joined Manchester Business School this year and will do research on “Political aspects of
innovative development: international experience and Russia’s strategy”. My research interests range from international
relations, politics, business and management to innovation, development, political risk assessment and disruptive technology.
My goal is to find a link between international development problems and innovation looking at the latter as a means of
developing markets, eradicating poverty and hunger, fighting spread of lethal diseases, and incorporating the entire world
society into the process of idea generation and technology development.
My future aspirations are to successfully defend my PhD thesis and continue academic career which seems really exiting to me,
At the same time I will be happy to realise business ideas that I have and succeed in launching some interesting

Vajk Miklos Lukacs de Pereny Martens

I have worked during 5 years as a consultant for various national and international organisations
such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), German Development
Bank (KfW), Peruvian Trust Fund for National Parks and Protected Areas (PROFONANPE), Latin
America and the Caribbean Network of Environmental Funds (RedLAC) and CARE in projects ranging
from climate change mitigation and adaptation to avian influenza prevention control. These projects
include professional assignments in Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Guatemala.
Since 2006, along side my consultancies, I have worked as Lecturer in Political Science and
Development Studies as well as Humanities Department at the faculty of Engineering and
Architecture, Universidad de San Martin de Porres in Lima, Peru and also as an Academic Tutor in
Development Studies at Victoria University of Wellington. During my time in New Zealand I also had the opportunity to intern
at the embassy of Peru in Wellington as Foreign Policy Analyst, a position officially endorsed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
of my country, However, to present, my dearest and most remarkable achievement is my social business which I set up jointly
with my brother and a friend on March 2007 in Villa Maria del Triunfo, one of the five poorest districts of Lima. “Santicucho”, a
traditional Peruvian food restaurant, provides stable employment to four friends and serves approximately 5000 hard working
customers per month with tasty, nutritious and affordable meals.
I hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Universidad Mayor de Chile, a Diploma in Financial Management
from ITESM—Guadalajara, Mexico, a masters degree in Development Studies from Victoria University of Wellington (NZAID
Scholar 2004-2005, Govt. of New Zealand) and a MSc in Innovation Management from Manchester Business School, University
of Manchester (Chevening Scholar 2009-2010, Govt. of the United Kingdom.) In addition, I am a graduate (egresado) of the
masters in Political Science—Public Policy from Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru and in 2006 I was awarded an ITEC
Scholarship by the Govt. of India to undertake a professional course in small enterprise Development at the Entrepreneurship

I Sumaira Sultan Minhas am a graduate of Software Engineering from International Islamic
University, Islamabad. I hold a bachelors degree in Computer Science from the same university.
Although by profession a professor, I have great liking for learning, not only about my field, i.e.
computers or software, but literally about everything. My interests range from latest hardware/
software technology to less technical stuff such as poetry and novels. My favourite pastimes include

Born in the paradise island of Mauritius, I came to England in 1993 to study Business Administra-
tion. After two years of study, I began my working career as a Secretary/PA and worked my way
up into Senior Management roles working for many private companies in various industries; IT,
Finance, Travel, Export/Import, Transport and Supply Chain. In 2003, I left employment to under-
take a 3-year BA (Hons) in Business and Management with the University of Hull. After graduating
with an Upper Class 2-1, I returned to employment and worked for the second largest supply chain firm in the UK for a year
before returning to education. I took my MSc in International Business and Management at the Manchester Business School in
2008 and graduated with a Distinction and an award for the Best Performing student on the course in 2009. I secured a place
on the doctoral degree for 2009/10 but chose to defer my entry for a year after being awarded a PhD Studentship with the

Linda Reid

I am a detective chief inspector in Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and have been seconded to the
Manchester Business School (MBS), in the University of Manchester (UoM) as a Visiting Fellow. I am
working with colleagues from the UoM to develop a strategic relationship between GMP and UoM and
to create a Crime Science and Security Institute.
I was born and educated in Staffordshire, England and went to work in the Metropolitan Police in
London when I was 18 years old. I have lived and worked in many counties in England, including
Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex. In addition to being a police officer, I am a
qualified teacher and have worked as a Human Resources Manager. I have a degree in English
Studies (B.A. Hons.) and a post-graduate Certificate in Education (Cert. Ed.). I am also a member of
the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (MCIPD).
I came to Manchester in 2005 and have worked as a detective since that time. Manchester is an interesting and busy city, with
many policing challenges. I have completed an MSc in International Police Science.
I have two grown-up daughters and spend much of any spare time walking my dogs and socialising with friends. I have
wanted to study for a PhD for some time, and it would be true to say it is my most important ambition right now.
Simon Reynolds

Growing up I never envisaged myself coming as far as I have within
academia. I was very sports orientated when younger, particularly
focused on golf. At seventeen I could only see myself either playing
or eventually working within a golf environment. So a sports
scholarship to the States seemed like the perfect opportunity to
pursue such a dream, but when the opportunity presented itself,
moving so far away to unfamiliar territories seemed daunting. I
therefore, eventually chose to study in the UK at undergraduate level
on a sports technology / golf operations related course at UCLAN in Preston. I enjoyed my BSc
(Hons) degree, despite its ups and downs, but once I graduated a lot had changed over three years.
I had not completely abandoned golf, but the passion was not now as strong. I was at a loose end
and felt my degree was quite specific, limiting my
career options. Consequently I looked to broaden my skills and make myself more appealing to potential employees. This took
the form of a MSc in Financial Management, which luckily UCLAN allowed me to complete despite not having a background in
Finance or Business. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and felt comfortable with the subject of
finance, business and management. After my Masters I took a year out, working at a local golf club with the intention of saving
some money so that I could go travelling
abroad. During this time I obviously gave my available options serious consideration. Ideas included completing my PGA,
professional golfers qualification, which I dismissed for various reasons, mainly viewing it as a step back. I looked at various
Graduate
schemes in a variety of organisations and industries, but nothing really appealed to me.
Additionally, the prospect of such a career path was, and still is not helped by the current economic climate and recession. It
was my girlfriends father who planted the idea of a PhD in my head. I enjoyed education and didn't know what I wanted to do

with the rest of my life, so why not study further? Since applying for a PhD at MBS my desire to complete a PhD grew whilst I
was away travelling around Europe. Upon my return I realised MBS was a great choice and my subject area was very relevant
and appropriate within
the modern business environment. It was therefore, a delight to hear the good news of a successful application just a few days
after returning to the UK. Without the support and advice from my parents I would not have got to where I am today. From an
early age they have encouraged and fully supported me through difficult life and educational decisions. I owe them a great
deal, so I hope the completion of this PhD will give me the opportunity to pursue a successful career and give something back
to them whilst making them very proud of my academic achievements. I think this PhD will open up many doors and enable
me to meet some interesting and valuable contacts. I therefore look forward to three years of research, working with
individuals within the business world and MBS. In this period I also plan to learn a new language, as business is now such an
international affair. Hopefully one day I will be able to offer valuable advice and information to make the business world a
better place.
Stefania Ricci

My name is Stefania Ricci, I am 25 years old and was born in Taranto, a coastal city in Apulia
(Southern Italy).
When I was child I was convinced that my passion was somewhere in the artistic side. From my
childhood to the end of my adolescence I have studied dance and classical ballet, therefore I had
the opportunity to exhibit in local theatres very early.
After accomplishing the high school of art and architecture I started to change my mind. I felt I
didn’t know anything about the world and I discovered to be very interested in understanding
economical and social matters, especially regarding not industrialized countries, for this reason I
chose to study Social Sciences with Development Studies.
At that time I also regretted I had never learnt a foreign language, thus I started to study English
alone at 19 years old. Listening soul and blues music, my favourites, helped me enjoying to study
English so much that I can say that Steve Wonder, Ray Charles, Barry White and George Benson
have been my best English teachers.
The most significant experience of my life was my journey in Tamil Nadu (India) as an international volunteer, I was 21
years old. I still remember the day when I went to Rome to get the Visa for entering in India, I was not able to speak
English and “google translate” made me ask something so weird that all the people there burst into laughing. Fortunately,
my English improved quite fast and I could carry out my duties which included collecting documents and data for setting
child sponsorship projects. In addition, I could spend time with children and residents, and it allowed me to
experience Indian culture in-depth. I would suggest everyone who comes from western countries to go to poor countries
and live there for awhile, it can change your way to understand concepts such as life, death, love and luck.
Two years after, I had the opportunity to spend a training period abroad in Malta (three months) and another in Spain (five
months). Both have been crucial in developing my personality and my communicational skills, other than giving me the
chance to be in contact with other culture and styles of live and learn Spanish language and cooking paella.
I firmly think that travelling is very important for opening mind and therefore eyes. I feel that my stays abroad have been a
good exercise for my character, have enlarged both my curiosity and my spirit of observation and have helped me shape my
personality and focus my aspirations.
Now I am going to start a PhD at the Manchester Business School, and it represents a very important goal in my life since
during my university studies I have developed a strong passion for researching, and the Manchester University is one of the
leading centre of academic research in the World.
Fatemeh Salehi Yazdi

I have studied Computer Engineering—software at University of Tehran. Then I completed my master
in Marketing and E-Commerce at a joint program between Tarbiat Modares University in Tehran, Iran
and Lulea University of Technology, Sweden. My dissertation aimed at investigating alliance network
of Iranian enterprises active in Nanotech industry. I enjoyed working on that and was awarded
Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC) Encouragement grant.
I have worked as an expert at Iran Nano Business Network (INBN) for two years. The career was a
great opportunity for me to enrich my knowledge and experience in the field of high-tech business.
INBN aims at empowering Nanotech forms through governmental financial and consultative supports
and fostering cooperation among them. Working at the heart of a high tech business network, I deeply dealt with Nanotech
company managers and became familiar with their challenges in product commercialisation, marketing and establishing
international partnerships.
Because of my interest in the area of high-tech business and inter-organisational relationships, I decided to deepen research in
this field through MBS’s PhD program in Business and Management. I hope it would be a great start for the long way I have in
learning about the world of high tech business.
Besides gaining knowledge Id like to live a great life in Manchester during the PhD program. I'm eager to make new friends,

Sebastian Schulze-Marmeling

Born in Berlin, Germany, I hold a BA in Politics and Administrative Science from the University of
Konstanz, Germany as well as an MA in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management from the
University of Warwick. My PhD at MBS will be about collective industrial relation and individual dispute
resolution across European countries.
Before coming to Manchester, I've been working for a German NGO in Poland, the International
Labour Office (ILO) in Geneva, the European Foundation for the improvement of Living and working
conditions (Eurofound) in Dublin and for a German Member of Parliament in Berlin.
Jaime Humberto Sierra Gonzalez
Nationality: Columbian
I have a multi-disciplinary education that started with a Bachelor of Education, continued with a
Diploma in International Relations and then led me to study a Masters course in Economics (all this
in Columbia) and, later, a Master in Economics in International Business and Finance in Rome.
I have worked as a language teacher, as a translator and from 1999 I became interested and active
in Economics Research. I spent three years in Rome as a Research Assistant and upon returning I
was contracted by the Management Department at Universidad Javeriana. There, I teach, do
research and consultancy. I am a member of Research group CINNCO where topics such as
knowledge and innovation are at the core of our activity. I love the academic career and that is why
I am about to start and PhD program.
On another account I am single but I have a full time engagement to Aikido, a traditional Japanese art. I also enjoy reading,
listening to music and dancing sometimes, watching films, playing basketball, walking and travelling. I am fond of good wine
and a nice chat too.
Iljin Sung

I am a student commencing my Ph.D. study from this September in Accounting and Finance
department at MBS. I am from Seoul, South Korea. I earned a M.S. degree in Economics from
Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, U.S.A. in 2008 and a M.S. degree in Finance from Korea
University after receiving a B.S. in business administration from Seoul Women’s University.
I worked as a lecturer to teach finance and statistics classes in several universities in Korea. My
research topic is about empirical market microstructure, which includes such issues as the extension
of Roll (1984) model with switching information regimes and duration effect. My research supervisors
are Professor Michael Bowe and Dr. Stuart Hyde. In my free time, I enjoy watching a sci-fi movie,
and playing table tennis, badminton, or basket ball.
Tarlok Teji

A passion for shopping!
My research topic is “Accounting for retailers’ Success: the key measures for sustainable
performance” in the Business Strategy and Management area of MBS. Having spent the last 30 years
in and around retail outlets it seemed a good academically grounded reason to spend the next three
years—shopping. Any colleague who has a passing interest in or a need to shop is welcome to join
me in my research quest.
I have recently retired from Deloitte where I did a lot of shopping as well—working with retail
companies around the world helping them improve their performance with a particular focus on
governance, risk, regulations and compliance and this meant having to do some shopping missions.
I love shopping so much that I spend three long weekends a year at the institute for Retail studies at the University of Stirling
in Scotland talking with retailers who are on their MBA training programmes. We talk about how to make money from retail
activity. As a teaching assistant, I help with the retail Finance module.
Most recently, I have gained an interest in retail development in emerging markets– yes its shopping again but outside the
UK. Maybe this research topic could be extended to do some shopping trips abroad? Any suggestions welcome.

Susana joins Manchester Business School from Navigant Consulting, her current employer for three
years, after completing a MSc International Business and Management at the University of
Manchester. Prior to this, she worked in the Renewable energy, housing and regeneration sector for
several years throughout which she gained exposure to a variety of private and public sector clients,
playing an integral role in planning and attending public consultations. Since joining Navigant Susana
has enhanced her public service experience by working on various Health, ICT and Education projects
including Building Schools for the Future (BSF), Primary Capital Programme (PCP) and Academies.
Susana is a keen sportswoman and plays in the Manchester Softball League for the Aardvarx softball

I love playing badminton, but due to the limited time and busy year, I did not have too much time more rewarding experience. After my PhD studies I would like to pursue an academic career and hope to find the right

usually watch some movies, listen to music or do some cooking. I love cooking but am not good at it. If I am quite upset,
disturbed or angry with something, I will cook for all the staff that I have. At present, cooking has been an efficient way for
me to release my emotions. In my mind, since last September, the most obvious difference comparing to my previous
university life, except thinking in English, speaking in English and dreaming in English, is the dependence on computers. The
bar culture is so popular in Dublin but I do not like it. So computers became my main entertainment. During holiday, I would
like to travel to other countries. In each trip, I prefer to act like a different person enjoying some particular experience. I also
like performance. If there is any drama performance or such kind of thing, I would like to take part in it.
Postgraduate study is a huge project and may be boring. Therefore, I want to make it colourful and meaningful. I will make as
many friends as I can both in the same area or different majors. More friends from different fields can bring out new ideas or
sparks and inspire our daily life. I’ve got high expectations on studying in the University of Manchester and look forward to
meeting you, guys!

I am a trained lawyer having read law at universities in Durham, Fribourg and Bruges, and having been called is the Bar in
2006.

Before commencing practice I worked in London as a political assistant for and MEP and member of the house of Lords, and
also as a lecturer in constitutional law.

I enjoy my practice as a barrister here in Manchester but have a real interest in banking reform and economics which is not
quite quenched by the work I do—and hence my reasons for embarking on a PT PhD.

I like travel, foreign languages and general outdoor sports and activities.

My aspiration—I want to be in the generation which sees the banking sector being properly reformed to meet the needs of our
society and future!
