WGST 3050 Final Reflection

This year my activism project was an elaboration on my previous project from the year

before. I sought to flesh out my previous work by enhancing my research and broadening my

horizons into new theories and expansions. I spent time conceptualizing my research and

reaching out to find more sources that were both more valid for my solutions project and also

tackled more intersectional topics within the project. It took a while to gather information that I

felt was the most helpful, and I spent a great deal of time narrowing down my bibliography and

adding in sources that I felt were better suited along the way.

I feel like the response to my project has been overall positive. The issue I am addressing

is something that I believe many people can resonate with, as many of us are victims of improper

sexual health education and found ourselves having to self teach most if not all of the content in

ways that may not have always been the most ideal. I received comments from many people

saying that they could identify with my work and encouraged me to go further as well as show

interest in taking part in my final solution. I believe my peers as well as younger high schoolers

and perhaps even middle schoolers are the ones who will most benefit from learning about my

feminist problem. Learning later is always better than never, and many consequences could be

avoided if this research were to be passed to the interest groups.

Figuring out the best way to spread the information was one of the biggest obstacles I

faced while creating my solutions. Sex is a hard topic to discuss and I came to the conclusion

that many adults would not want their children receiving sex education from untrained college

students. I wanted them to get proper information from proper professionals, as most of the

college students had incomplete schooling as well and would merely be speaking from their own

experiences. However, with the inclusion of the professionals there to give factual and scientific

advice, I would like to also have adults closer to the age of the children within the session to

encourage them to ask questions that they otherwise would not ask an adult.

I think one of the biggest logistical factors that I struggled to find was the monetary

aspect of my solution and how to acquire the funds. The issue with money is always up in the air

for any project you encounter, but I find that this figure would only truly become solid once the

solution had been put into motion and research regarding locations and professional speakers had

been done. One of the easier logical factors was who I wanted to have as the audience, and who I

wanted to have as the college students. Obviously I have a sea of peers that would be willing to

volunteer, as I found that most of them are interested as well as passionate about this topic like I

am. I also knew that the audience was going to be high school students with an exception of

some middle school students as they are both currently taking sex education health classes and

about to enter college where the incorrect information could cost them seriously.

Overall, I feel as though this project would be a success if implemented. I’m not sure that

I would feel comfortable enacting this solution now, but maybe in the future when I am more

certified to speak on this matter and have a counseling certification. I believe the information I

have learned will help me in my counseling career as I have both become more sympathetic to

intersectional issues as well as learned a great deal about the issues within our educational
system as well as how it can affect children within it. If I were to implement my solution now, I

feel as though it would be lackluster and not containing all the benefits that I would like to see. I

want to be sure that I am both physically and emotionally prepared to tackle a project such as

this, so I would need time to prepare myself, and perhaps become more knowledgeable on the

topic. Furthermore, I would like to actually be able to record and measure the benefits of

speaking or hearing from serious professionals as opposed to just learning from the curriculum. I

feel as though that statistic would be quite important, and perhaps influential in kickstarting the

sex education reform.

Overall, I was happy to have gotten the opportunity to expand on my Multi-Genre Project

and actually devise a proper solution that could benefit those involved. I’m glad I decided to

stick with the same topic, as I was satisfied as everything fell into place and came together in

completion. As a result I feel as though my first year at UNCC and within the Gen-X community

were purposeful and beneficial to my learning. This topic is both something I am passionate

about as well as something that pertains to my aspirations to become a psychologist within a

school setting. I hope to take this knowledge with me into my career and expand upon it further

as I become more nuanced and knowledgeable on this topic.
