An abstract of the paper
 Astrology and later astronomy has had a profound influence over the past few millennia on
both eastern and western cultures. It was believed2 that heavenly bodies had a direct or indirect
influence upon people, their lives from birth to death and even beyond. Both uneducated and
educated people were keen to know their future in all dimensions such as way of life, achievements,
economic conditions, health, long life, love- marriage- off springs, calamity etc., and hence they
resorted to this branch of learning, irrespective of criticism from rationalists, non- believers,
intellectuals and the like.
 Indian traditional astronomers such as Bhrugu, Pundit Dhundi Raja, Varahamihira in their
astronomical treatises and compilations (samhitas) have spoken extensively about the effects of
samvatsaras (one full year) on individuals and the world at large. Samvatsara is a time in which
planet Jupiter (Guru griha) crosses the sign of one zodiacal sign(rashi) with his average speed and will
be nearest or farthest to the Earth and is in touch with auspicious or inauspicious rays. It takes sixty
years for Jupiter and Saturn (Shani) to reach the zero degree of the Aries (Mesha) sign. Various
angels found between Jupiter and Saturn has their influence on samvatsaras.
 The traditional astrologers say that a person born in each samvatsara, month (masa), fortnight
(paksha), lunar day (tithi) and day (dina) has different personality traits compared to other members
of the same family. The modern psychologists such as Meyer Friedman and R. H. Rosenman (1950)
have come out with four types of personality such as A, B, C, and D and a combination of A-B, C-D etc.,
These personality types exhibit same type of behavioral patterns worldwide and have striking
similarities with the people born in different samvatsaras.
 In this paper, I propose to enlist the characteristics of different samvatsaras (from Prabhava
to Krodhana), the behavior of people born in such samvatsaras and compare them with the modern
personality types. A set of horoscopes would be analyzed as a part of this study.
 It is hoped that such an inter-disciplinary study covering the Indian knowledge system with
the modern knowledge system would reveal the ancient Indian wisdom in a new perspective for the
benefit of mankind. (c) Prof MKS, STAIT Intl Seminar Paper, Jan 9-10, 2010, New Delhi
CONCEPT OF SAMVATSARAS
3

Samvatsara = sam + vas (Nivase) Saraha

The seasons dwell happily
= One full year
Planet Jupiter (Guru) with his average speed crosses the
journey of one zodiacal sign (Rashi)
• Jupiter takes 12 Samvatsaras to complete
one round of the zodiac.
• Guru sometimes nearer to the earth or
farther from the earth
Hence each Samvatsara is different
Jupiter

CONCEPT OF SAMVATSARAS
4
• During his journey Guru contacts auspicious or inauspicious
rays in the Galaxy ( stars, planets etc)
• In Virodhi samvatsara (2009-10)
• Guru (Jupiter) moved in makara rashi
• (from 27-03-09 to 1-5-09, 30-07-09 to
• 19-12-09), and in Kumbha (Aquarius) rashi
• from 1-5-09 to 15-03-10)
• Saturn (Shani) moved in Simha (Leo) rashi
• from 1-5-09 to 09-09-09) and in Kanya (Virgo) rashi
• 10-09-09 to 15-03-10).

The nine Planets

(c) Prof MKS, STAIT Intl Seminar Paper, Jan 9-10, 2010, New Delhi
Movement of Jupiter (Guru) & Saturn (Shani)
• At the beginning of creation,
5
Jupiter and Saturn were on zero
degree of Aries (Mesha)
• Saturn’s daily motion is
two minutes/year (Kala) Saturn

• Saturn takes 3 years to cover the entire Zodiac

• Jupiter’s movement- five minutes/year takes 12 years to cover the
entire Zodiac
• LCM of 30 and 12 = 60
• Hence, Jupiter and Saturn take 60 years to reach zero degree of
Aries sign
• Samvatsara combined with month (masa), fortnight (paksha),
lunar date (tithi) and day (dina) impact people & country
• Various angles between Jupiter and Saturn have influence on
Samvatsaras
