2010, as expected, was a year of
change in Prince George’s County.
The county saw a massive change in
its political leadership, but also saw a
lame duck leader in shame.
Former County Executive Jack
Johnson, and his wife, Councilwoman
Leslie Johnson, D.-Dist. 6, were
arrested by federal authorities on Nov.
12 on corruption charges. It was part
of a larger scheme in which nine other
people were arrested including three
Prince George’s police officers.
The investigation included a
wiretap that famously caught the
Johnsons trying to destroy a $100,000
check that Jack Johnson allegedly took
from a developer, and trying to hide
$79,600 in cash in Leslie Johnson’s

This news has overshadowed a
county, which had high hopes after
September’s primary elections. The
county saw a change of the guard in
the county executive, state’s attorney,
sheriff and five of the nine council
seats.
Of course the major change was
the election of Rushern Baker as the
new county executive. Baker defeated
former Sheriff Michael Jackson, who
was seen as Jack Johnson’s protégé.

just a political victory,” Baker said at
his victory celebration. “This is not
the finish; this is the beginning line.

Budget Looks Bleak

Among his first tasks, newly
christened Prince George’s County
Executive Rushern Baker recently
announced some sobering news
regarding the county’s budget in
fiscal year 2012.
“There is very little revenue
growth in 2012 and beyond,” Baker
said. “The property tax assessment
continues to decline. The income tax
will grow at a rate of less than one
percent due to the regional economic
conditions. There’s additional
expenditure pressure for 2012 for
education, pension, healthcare and
key program areas.”
Due to that, the county is looking
at a deficit of at least $77 million.
Baker says that number could rise
to $105 million if the burden of

increasing the commercial tax base in
the county and he got help in that area
from state and regional partners. Gov.

still fighting on behalf of the county
on that matter as they believe the
shifting of the burden could bankrupt
Maryland counties, especially Prince
George’s.
“I feel like if the state is really
focused on education then it should
fully fund the teacher’s pension, so
I cannot agree with that decision,”
said Sen. Douglas J.J. Peters, D.-
Dist. 23.
Given the bleak figures, Baker
and his financial analysts are going
through every line of the budget to
figure out where they can cut costs.
That means the county hiring freeze
will continue with the exception
of sworn positions, and furloughs

moguls and models, the world lost a
number of standout figures in 2010.
News of their deaths sent shockwaves
throughout the public, as fans
mourned their losses. Here, the AFRO
remembers some of the nation’s most
recognized faces and the memories
they inspired.
Dorothy Height, 98
Thousands poured into the
Washington National Cathedral on
April 29 to honor Dorothy Height’s
legacy as a pioneering civil rights
leader and educator. Height served as
a past president of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority and was president emerita
of the National Council of Negro
Women, which she led for 40 years. At
her funeral, President Barack Obama
wept openly and said, “Dr. Dorothy
Height deserves a place in this
pantheon. She, too, deserves a place in
our history books. She, too, deserves a
place of honor in America’s memory.”
Vonetta McGee, 65
Vonetta McGee, a leading actress
in popular 1970s films Blacula and
Shaft died at a hospital in Berkeley,
Calif., on July 9 after suffering a heart
attack and spending two days on life
support.
Raymond Haysbert, 90
Raymond V. Haysbert Sr., the
pioneering community leader and
business giant behind Parks Sausage,
died May 24 at Baltimore’s Union
Memorial Hospital of congestive heart
failure, according to reports. Haysbert
was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, amid
abject poverty. After working for a
coal company, he joined the Army Air
Corps and was a fighter pilot with the
celebrated Tuskegee Airmen. By the
early ‘50s, Haysbert was working as
a business teacher in his home state.
In 1952, he’d settled in Baltimore to

status. Seventeen years later the
company went public, and by the end
of the decade, Haysbert was named
executive vice president. Under his

owned businesses at the time.
Eunice W. Johnson, 93
Eunice W. Johnson, creator of the
Ebony Fashion Fair tour, died Jan. 3
at her Chicago home. She was one of
the first entrepreneurs to create and

market cosmetics for women of color.
She married John H. Johnson, founder
of the EBONY and Jet empire and was
responsible for naming the popular
EBONY brand.
Albertina Walker, 81
Often dubbed the “Queen of
Gospel,” vocalist Albertina Walker,
who spent six decades inspiring future
gospel artists and inspiring legions
of fans with songs like “Please Be
Patient with Me,” “Lord Keep Me Day
By Day” and “Walk Around Heaven,”
died Oct. 8.
Vonetta McGee Walker was born in Chicago and
began singing at the West Point
Baptist Church. Throughout her
teen years she performed with
various groups and was influenced
by celebrated gospel artist Mahalia
Jackson, with whom she later toured.
Walker founded The Caravans and
recorded over 60 albums. She was
nominated for 10 Grammy Awards
– winning one – and received three
Stellar Awards for her gospel music
contributions.
John H. Murphy, 94
John H. Murphy III, who was
remembered as a steady hand
that guided the Afro-American
Newspapers through the turbulent
waters of civil rights history and
a perilous industry, died Oct.16.
Murphy began his service to the
AFRO in 1937 and served in a
variety of positions until he retired
in November 1986, after 49 years
of service.  He started as the office
manager of the Washington AFRO,
took over as president in 1961 and
became chief executive officer in
1967. He was at the helm as president
and/or chairman of the board for 25
years.
Gary Coleman, 42
Former “Diff’rent Strokes” star
Gary Coleman died May 28 after
suffering an intracranial hemorrhage.
Known for his “What’chu talkin’ ‘bout
Willis” catch phrase, Coleman was
hospitalized May 26 after injuring his
head in a fall at his home near Salt
Lake City.
Born in Zion, Ill., Coleman was
recognized as one of entertainment’s
brightest stars during his childhood
appearance on “Diff’rent Strokes.”
Despite his promising career, Coleman
struggled to gain notoriety after the
show ended and faced a number of
health complications stemming from
an autoimmune kidney disease.
Walter Hawkins, 61
Walter Hawkins’ career spanned

representatives to take control of the House
and 13 new senators. And across the nation,
the party gained 690 new state legislators and

Michael Steele vs. the GOP– Despite
those gains, GOP insiders have been calling
for Republican leader Michael Steele’s ouster
from the helm of the Republican National
Committee among allegations of financial
mismanagement and frequent verbal gaffes
over the past two years. But, as he has done
throughout his tenure, Steele struck back at his
critics, recently announcing his plans to run for
re-election in January.

Muslims came under fire after one group vied
to build an Islamic cultural center near Ground
Zero. The move prompted heated debate at a
public hearing and at least one planned Koran

In October, Virginia Thomas, wife of
Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence
Thomas, made similarly inexplicable
comments. The tea party activist called Anita
Hill—19 years after Hill accused her former
boss Clarence Thomas of making sexual
comments—and left a message demanding an
apology for the allegations. Hill, now teaching
law at Brandeis University in Massachusetts,
said she initially thought the call was a prank.
When Mrs. Thomas confirmed that she has sent
the message, however, Hill told ABC News, “I
have no intention of apologizing, and I stand by
my testimony in 1991.”

He said he remains positive,

programs and services that

Rubble remains one of the
biggest obstacles in rebuilding
Haiti after the January 2010
earthquake that destroyed
much of the capital.
The Haitian government
reported that approximately
230,000 people died, and over
a million were left homeless.
It also reported that 30,000
commercial buildings were no
longer usable.
The world wide response
to the crisis was amazing,
with a multitude of
organization and government
pledging money and other
resources to rescue people and
assist with rebuilding. This
has not turned into a reality
for the country – many of the
pledges resources have still
not been delivered.
Almost a year later, the
majority of those displaced
by the devastating earthquake
still reside in shelters, in
temporary tents and other
makeshift housing.
The earthquake was not
the only reason Haiti was
in the news this year. This
was an election year for the
country, and the process
was postponed because of
the earthquake. Along with
senators and deputy seats to
be selected, a new president
was to be selected.

the film during a press screening, I wondered how I’d review a

larger-than-life film replete with a bevy of A-list actresses who
delivered strikingly realistic performances. It proved a challenge,
but writing about a film which showed Black women at their best,

worst and every nuance in between was refreshing, particularly in
an entertainment realm filled with one-dimensional characters and
reality show drama queens.
While I didn’t think For Colored Girls was a perfect adaptation
of Ntozake Shange’s 1970s literary gem, the 2010 release highlights
some of the obstacles “colored girls” and all women face.
Black Farmers Receive Long-Awaited Justice

splashes over the summer but
crashed miserably once the
games started to matter.

Washington Wizards Can’t

fans had a reason to forget
the previous campaign’s
26-56 record. A summer
league filled with misleading
highlights continued to
pump blood in the
veins of Wizards
watchers, as Wall

became the central
figure in the team’s
turnaround attempt.
Once the official
tipoff began, however,
hope quickly
dissipated. A 1-4 start
to the season was
just a sign of things
to come. Injuries to
Wall kept the rookie
in and out the lineup,
and a December
trade finally ended
the Gilbert Arenas
era. Washington currently
finds itself last in the NBA
Southeast Division and may
struggle to match last season’s
futile record.
Baltimore Ravens
Remained Winners in 2010
Meanwhile, further
north on Interstate 295, the
Baltimore Ravens remained
the most successful team in
the Maryland region, earning
yet another winning season.
The Ravens will head to the
playoffs for a third straight
year, a first in team history.
With a roster that includes

College Sports—It was
yet another typical losing
affair for Howard University’s
football team as they finished
the 2010 season with a 1-10
record, their sixth straight
losing season. Despite losing,
Howard linebacker Keith
Pough was voted to the Mid-
Eastern Athletic Conference
first team on defense, while
teammates Sackie Kerkulah
and Willie Carter were
selected to the all-conference
second team.
Meanwhile, Howard’s
basketball squad hired new
head coach Kevin Nickelberry
to pull the struggling Bison
team out of its multi-year
losing funk. Unfortunately,
the Bison saw team captain
Calvin Thompson and star
recruit Theodore Boyomo
suffer season-ending injuries
before the season could even
begin. Howard is currently
facing a 10-game losing
streak to start the New Year.
But while the Bison
struggles, Morgan State
University’s basketball team
currently holds a 4-5 overall
record so far this season.
Junior star Kevin Thompson
and the Bears are trying to
repeat as Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference champs after
claiming the conference title
with a 26-9 record last season.
Morgan State also earned its
first ever trip to the NCAA
Championship tournament,
where they fell to top ranked
West Virginia in the first round.
Unfortunately for Morgan
State’s football team, the wins
came few and far between, as
the Bears finished this season
with a 4-7 record, their first
losing season in three years.

NFL’s Super Bowl—This NFL season has truly been
one of the most tightly contested campaigns in the league’s
recent history. There are more than 10 teams that will
potentially finish with at least 10 wins this season, including
the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints.
The Saints join the Atlanta Falcons and Michael Vick’s
Philadelphia Eagles as the cream of the crop in the NFC
conference, but most of the NFL’s heavy hitters reside in the
AFC conference. Look for Tom Brady and the New England
Patriots, the New York Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers or
the Baltimore Ravens to bring the Super Bowl’s Lombardi
Trophy back to the AFC.
NBA Finals—The Miami Heat became instant favorites
among many basketball fans after superstar LeBron James
decided to “take his talents to South beach” this offseason
and team up with former Finals MVP Dwyane Wade. But the
Heat will still have to get by Boson Celtics and Los Angeles
Lakers, who featured in 2010’s epic seven-game Finals. Kobe
Bryant and the Lakers edged Boston for their second straight
championship, and are looking to “three-peat.” But Boston
added depth to their own star studded cast, signing Shaquille
O’Neal to join Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.
Don’t be surprised if we have a repeat Finals performance of
the Lakers vs. Celtics.
College Football Championship—Auburn quarterback
Cameron Newton has done his best to dazzle America. The
ultimate weapon on the football field, a quarterback who can
run and throw, Newton’s Heisman Trophy wasn’t a fluke. He
thoroughly dissected opponents all season, helping Auburn tie
a school record for wins with 13 and ringing up scoreboards
in the process. Headed by Newton, Auburn scored over 49
points seven times this year and finished sixth in the NCAA
in scoring. However, they’ll need every point against their
BCS Football Championship opponent, Oregon in January’s
No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup. Oregon finished first in scoring this
season, averaging 49.3 points per game, outracing teams to a
12-0 record.
Oregon became a featured attraction this year as their
offense was simply too much for teams. It’ll be the legs of
Newton vs. the speed of Oregon on Jan. 10 for a chance for
collegiate supremacy. While dominant, Newton’s one-man
band might not be enough to combat the quicks of Oregon as
the school will likely take home its first national title.
College Basketball Championship—While the college
basketball season is still early, parity seems to be the universal
theme so far. Yes, Duke, the reigning 2010 champions, is
still tops in the land, but it’s not as obvious as last year’s
tournament run showed. Ohio State, Kansas, Connecticut and
Syracuse have played impressive through the season’s first
couple of months and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see some
combination of the aforementioned school’s in this year’s
Final Four. But it’s something about Duke that just seems
favorable. Maybe it’s the combination of skilled shooters and
coach Mike Krzyzewski. Whatever it is, Duke remains as the
favorite to bring home another title until they are dethroned.
