Catania turned down on
committee assignment
D.C. Council member Kwame Brown (D-At-Large), who
becomes Council chair Jan. 2, turned down a request by
Council member David Catania (I-At-Large) that he create a
new education committee and appoint Catania as chair.
Brown turned down a similar request by Council member
Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3), who, like Catania, had been cam-
paigning behind the scenes for Brown to name her chair of
an education panel.
Brown instead decided to follow the course set by his pre-
decessor, Council Chair Vincent Gray, who becomes mayor
the same day Brown becomes Council chair. Brown will keep
education issues and oversight of the D.C. public school sys-
tem under the auspices of the Committee of the Whole. And
Brown, like Gray, will be chair of that committee, on which all
13 Council members serve.
While a disappointment to Catania, AIDS activists and ad-
vocates for health care reform will likely be pleased that Cata-
nia will remain chair of the Council’s Committee on Health.
Catania, who is gay, has been credited with pushing through
sweeping changes in the city’s AIDS office and Department
of Health that activists have said have greatly improved the
services to people with HIV/AIDS and other health conditions.
In a separate action, Brown reassigned gay Council mem-
ber Jim Graham (D-At-Large) from his post as chair of the
Committee on Public Works and Transportation to become
chair of the Committee on Human Services. Council member
Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6), who has chaired the Human Ser-
vices panel, will take over the Public Works and Transporta-
tion Committee.
Brown did not say why he made the switch between Gra-
ham and Wells. Graham told the Washington Post he is “fine”
with the change, saying he comes from a background in hu-
man services programs as the former head of the Whitman-
Walker Clinic.

Kameny FB page formed to
help longtime activist financially
A volunteer member of the local gay charitable group
Helping Our Brothers and Sisters (HOBS) has created a
Facebook page intended to facilitate financial contributions
to support veteran gay rights leader Frank Kameny.
In a letter to HOBS supporters and others in the LGBT
community, Ben Carver announced that he has created a
“Buy Frank a drink,” page on Facebook, with the intent of
enabling members of the community to make a $10 dona-
tion in lieu of buying Kameny a drink to thank him for his
more than 50 years of work on behalf of LGBT causes.
“I’m writing you today because while Mr. Kameny lives
very simply, he has struggled to make ends meet on his slim
pension,” Carver said. “Also, while his mind is sharp, he has
difficulty managing his finances. To be brief, one of our great-
est heroes needs help.”
Marvin Carter, HOBS’ founder and president, noted that
during a HOBS Christmas luncheon for Kameny, the na-
tionally known activist told of his attendance at President
Obama’s signing of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal bill and
how Obama and Vice President Joe Biden shook his hand at
the event.
Kameny, a World War II combat veteran, has been cred-
ited with starting a paralegal service to help gay and lesbian
service members under investigation for their sexual orien-
tation in the 1970s, becoming the first known gay-run effort
to stop gays from being discharged from the military. The
paralegal service was one of many Kameny initiatives and
advocacy campaigns he organized over the years on behalf
of LGBT rights.

slurs at the two from inside their car. The men say
they were punched, kicked and yelled at for about
three minutes minutes. About 20 people observed
it but didn’t try to intervene, the Voice reported. The
attack ended when one of the men warned the oth-
ers that police were coming, On Top reported.
The men told a Texas NBC news affiliate the po-
lice were not helpful and said, “We’ll never catch
these guys.”
Gay W.Va. miner accuses
employer of sexual harassment
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Troubled coal producer
Massey Energy Co. is facing more legal problems,
this time in the form of a sexual harassment lawsuit
filed by a gay miner, according to an Associated
Press report.
Sam Hall’s lawsuit claims he endured years of
verbal abuse and threats from co-workers and man-
agers at several Massey mines in West Virginia. The
lawsuit names Massey subsidiary Spartan Mining
Co. and a Spartan foreman as defendants, the re-
port said.
Hall’s lawsuit chiefly seeks a court order requiring
Spartan’s management to put an end to the threats,
intimidation, name calling and the like. And it seeks
court-ordered monitoring by the West Virginia Human
Rights Commission, as well as unspecified damages.
“He wants to be a coal miner and he wants to be
protected and safe,” Hall’s lawyer, Roger Forman, told
the AP. “This is a dangerous job and you can’t be pre-
occupied about what other people are going to do.”
Hall still works for Massey, where he started his
mining career in 2005. He has stayed with the com-
pany, transferring as mines ran out of coal and closed
over the years, the AP report said. Through it all, he’s
put up with harsh treatment from name-calling co-
workers, according to the complaint.
“He didn’t want to sue anybody, he wanted to
work it out,” Forman told the AP. “There needs to be
some education of people who act that way.”
At one mine, a co-worker allegedly spray painted
a picture depicting Hall engaged in a gay sexual act
and attaching a sign accusing Hall of pedophilia to his
car. At another mine, Hall “became seriously worried
because the harassing slurs accelerated to violent
threats, such as ‘I would like to see all faggots die.’”
Florida men found murdered
on Christmas were partners
WILTON MANORS, Fla. — Two men whose bod-
ies were found last week inside their rented home in
Wilton Manors, Fla., were partners and appear to have
been murdered, the South Florida Gay News reported.
The bodies of Kevin Powell, 47, and Steve Ad-
ams, 52, former residents of Hollywood, Fla., were
discovered by the sister of one of the victims who
called police when her brother failed to arrive at her
home for planned holiday festivities. Powell had Dia-
betes and his sister was fearful he may have need-
ed medical care.
Investigators are looking for the victims’ vehicle,
a black 2003 Saturn Vue with Florida tag 989VRL.
The investigation continues. At this time, investiga-
tors do not have a motive and have not named any
suspect. The South Florida Gay News called the
case a “double homicide” but did not give details
about how the men appear to have been murdered.
Allentown, Pa., considers extending
medical benefits to gay couples
ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Allentown, a small town in
eastern Pennsylvania, may soon become the first
municipality in the Lehigh Valley to offer medical
benefits to partners of gay employees, whether ac-
tive or retired, the Morning Call, a regional Pennsyl-
vania paper, reported this week.
Under a domestic partnership bill before coun-
cil, partners of gay employees would be eligible for
health benefits as long as the couple can illustrate
they live together and are jointly responsible for
household finances, the Call reported.
Many private companies and institutions in the
Lehigh Valley, such as Muhlenberg College and the
Morning Call, offer similar benefits, as does the city
of Philadelphia.
“This is about equality and doing the right thing
for our very hard-working city staff members,” Adri-
an Shanker, a city resident and vice president of the
Pennsylvania Diversity Network, which supports the
Lehigh Valley’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgen-
der community, told the Call.
He said the bill is “about recruiting and retaining
the most talented employees for the city of Allen-
town.”
The bill, introduced on Dec. 15 and slated for a
final vote as early as next month, has broad support
among council members, who say gay couples de-
serve the same benefits as their heterosexual coun-
terparts, the Call said.
Mayor Ed Pawlowski has yet to reveal his position
on the measure, saying it’s “under review.”
Gay man leads N.C.
church association
RALEIGH, N.C. — The newly elected president
of the North Carolina Council of Churches is gay, a
significant point as churches in the south are often
slower in accepting gays into church life.
The News Observer, a North Carolina paper, re-
ported that Stan Kimer, is one of only two of the coun-
try’s 33 similar church councils that has elected an
openly gay leader. That makes Kimer’s presidency
of the N.C. Council — a coalition of 17 Christian de-
nominations and eight individual churches that work
on social issues — historic in the South.
As president, Kimer leads a 35-member govern-
ing board that sets the council’s direction on a host
of social issues, including racial equality, health
care, immigrant rights and environmental conserva-
tion. He was elected to a one-year term and could
run for a second one-year term.
Kimer, who retired from IBM last year after serv-
ing as director of sales operations for its global
business services, is now a private consultant. He
lives in Raleigh with his partner of 19 years, Rich
Roark, a loan manager for Capital Bank, the Ob-
server reported.

#1 Same-sex couples
marry in D.C.
A long line of same-sex couples
snaked its way through a corridor at the
D.C. Superior Court’s Marriage Bureau
on March 3, the first day the couples
could apply for a marriage license under
the city’s Religious Freedom and Mar-
riage Equality Amendment Act.
The Act was approved by the City
Council and signed by Mayor Adrian
Fenty in December 2009, making D.C. the
sixth jurisdiction in the country to legalize
same-sex marriage. The weddings began
in March following the completion of a re-
quired congressional review of the law.
Under the watchful eye of nearly two-
dozen television cameras and news pho-
tographers, two lesbian couples and a gay
male couple were among the first same-sex
couples to wed—in ceremonies held at the
Human Rights Campaign headquarters.
“Today was like a dream for me,” said
Angelisa Young, 47, minutes after her
wedding to Sinjhoyla Townsend, 41, her
partner of 12 years.
“I always felt like it would come true.
But it’s here now, and it’s really real,” she
said. “We want to thank everyone who
made this possible.”
Opponents of same-sex marriage,
led by Maryland minister Harry Jack-

seeking to force the city to hold a voter
referendum on whether the law should

final appeal on the question of whether
the city should be forced to hold the

#2 Fenty loses to Gray
Mayor Adrian Fenty lost his re-election
bid to City Council chair Vincent Gray
in the city’s Sept. 14 Democratic pri-
mary. Although the two candidates each
have a strong record of support on LGBT
issues, including support for the same-
sex marriage law, Gray received the
strong backing of most LGBT organiza-
tions and activists.
Like other constituency groups, a
number of LGBT leaders said Fenty ap-
peared to have lost touch with the needs
and concerns of the LGBT community.
They noted that he declined to speak
out, for example, on the growing number
of anti-LGBT hate crimes and rarely at-
tended LGBT events or meetings.
But election returns showed that
Fenty beat Gray in nearly all voter pre-
cincts where large numbers of gays
live such as Dupont Circle, Adams
Morgan, Logan Circle and Capitol Hill.
Areas where high concentrations of
black gays live voted overwhelmingly
for Gray, highlighting the city-wide ra-
cial divide in the election, with blacks
voting mostly for Gray and whites vot-
ing mostly for Fenty.
#3 Principal Brian
Betts murdered
The murder in April of highly ac-
claimed D.C. middle school principal

old man he met though an Internet chat
line for men interested in sex with men
drew extensive media attention.

time of the incident — have pleaded
guilty through plea bargain offers by
prosecutors in Montgomery County,
Md., where Betts was shot to death in
his house on April 15. Nineteen-year-old
Alante Saunders, who admitted he shot
Betts accidentally during a robbery, was
sentenced to 40 years in jail.
Saunders acknowledged to police that
he hatched a plan to meet someone on
the chat line for the purpose of robbing
them, a disclosure that created alarm in
the gay community over potential danger
of meeting sex partners online.
Two attorneys representing Betts’
family have called on the U.S. Justice
Department to investigate whether Saun-
ders should be charged under the Mat-
thew Shepard federal hate crimes law.
“Brian was a gay man and we believe
an investigation should be opened un-
der that law to determine whether a hate
crime has or has not been committed,”
said attorney Gloria Allred.
#4 Md. elects 7 out
gays; Beyer loses race
Seven openly gay candidates – four
incumbents and three newcomers –
were elected to the Maryland Legislature
in November, boosting chances that the
legislature will pass a same-sex mar-
riage law in 2011.
Meanwhile, Dana Beyer, a retired eye
surgeon and political activist, lost her bid
to become the first transgender person
elected to the Maryland Legislature. Beyer
ran for a seat in the House of Delegates
from a district in Montgomery County.
Among the winners were gay incum-
bents Richard Madeleno, a member of
the State Senate; and lesbian House of
Delegates members Anne Kaiser, Heath-
er Mizeur and Maggie McIntosh. Among
the challengers to win was Mary Wash-
ington, who captured a seat in the House

members of MTV’s ‘Real World D.C.,’ which
aired in early 2010.

the first black lesbian to be elected to the
Maryland Legislature and just the sec-
ond black lesbian to win a seat in a state
legislature in the U.S.
Lesbian Bonnie Cullison and gay can-
didate Luke Clippinger each won seats
in the House of Delegates. All seven are
Democrats.
#5 Not guilty verdict
in Wone case
Three gay men charged with obstruction
of justice, conspiracy to obstruct justice,
and evidence tampering in connection with
the 2006 murder of D.C. attorney Robert
Wone were found not guilty of the charges
in June following a sensational trial.
In a development that stunned court-
room spectators and Wone’s family mem-
bers, D.C. Superior Court Judge Lynn
Leibovitz said it was “very probable” that
defendants Joseph Price, Victor Zabor-
sky and Dylan Ward engaged in a mas-
sive cover-up of the murder and know
the identity of Wone’s killer, as asserted
by prosecutors.
But she said the government failed to
prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the
men committed the offenses with which
they were charged, forcing her to issue a
not-guilty verdict in the non-jury trial. The
defendants waived their right to a jury trial.
They are now scheduled to for a sec-
ond trial in a $20 million wrongful death
lawsuit that Wone’s wife and family mem-
bers filed against them, which is expect-
ed to begin in the spring.
They have claimed an unknown

their upscale townhouse near Dupont
Circle, where Wone was spending the
night after working late in his nearby
office. Wone, whose wife said he was

Police and prosecutors argued there
was no evidence of a break-in at the
house and an autopsy showed Wone ap-
peared to have been immobilized – pos-
sibly by a paralytic drug – before being
stabbed three times in the chest.
#6 Md. recognizes
out-of-state gay
marriages
Maryland Attorney General Doug-
las Gansler issued a long-awaited legal
opinion in February saying same-sex
marriages performed in other states and
countries most likely would have full legal
standing in Maryland.
But in his 53-page opinion, Gansler
said the Maryland Court of Appeals
would have the final say in the mat-
ter if opponents of same-sex marriage
decide to contest the legal standing of
married same-sex couples living in or
visiting the state.
Gansler’s opinion was hailed by LGBT
activists and gay couples, who said they
planned to marry in D.C. beginning in
March, when the District’s same-sex mar-
riage law took effect. But outraged op-
ponents of same-sex marriage vowed to
contest the Gansler opinion, and some
called on the state legislature to impeach
him over the issue.
#7 GLOV calls for
attention to hate crimes
The D.C. group Gays and Lesbians
Opposing Violence (GLOV) says 2010
marked yet another year in which LGBT
people were the victims in more than
70 percent of the total number of hate
crimes reported in the District.
The LGBT community became
alarmed earlier in the year when D.C.
police issued an alert about nearly a
half-dozen anti-gay assaults occur-
ring near gay bars in the Dupont Circle
and Logan Circle areas. In one case,
a group of teenage males and females
assaulted a gay man walking on P
Street near Dupont Circle while shout-
ing anti-gay names.
With teenagers and young adults
emerging as the perpetrators in most of
the anti-LGBT hate crimes, GLOV and
other activists groups have called on the
city’s public school system to increase
diversity awareness programs foster bet-
ter understanding of LGBT people.

#8 Trans woman
claims assault by
D.C. cop
Transgender activists have said D.C.
police may have violated policies for ad-
dressing the transgender community in
a Dec. 1 incident in which a transgender
woman said she was assaulted by an off-
duty police officer.
Chloe Alexander Moore, 25, was ar-
rested on a charge of assault for spray-
ing a chemical repellent into the face
of Officer Raphael Radon. Radon was
dressed in civilian clothes and, according
to Moore, assaulted her after calling her
names, leading her to believe she was in
imminent danger. She said she squirted
Radon with pepper spray in self-defense
and did not know he was a police officer.
#9 Washington
Blade re-launches
The Washington Blade resumed publish-
ing as a local, independently owned news-
paper in April after a November 2009 bank-
ruptcy filing by its parent company, Window
Media, forced it to shut down after 40 years
of service as an LGBT publication.
Blade staff members, with the help of lo-
cal advertisers and community supporters,
launched the D.C. Agenda newspaper to fill
in for the Blade immediately after the Blade
shutdown. Following months of preparation,
publisher Lynne Brown, editor Kevin Naff,
and sales executive Brian Pitts formed a new
company that bought the Blade’s name and
remaining assets from the bankruptcy court.
#10 MTV’s ‘Real
World’ showcases D.C.
D.C.’s gay community joined in the sus-
pense and merriment in early 2010 when
MTV’s reality series “Real World” pre-
miered its “Real World: D.C.” episodes,
which were filmed in the District in 2009.
Much of the filming took place in a Du-
pont Circle mansion, where the cast resid-
ed while they visited Washington’s historic
sites as well as many nightlife venues. Cast
member Mike Manning, who is bisexual,
was filmed in some of the city’s gay bars
and clubs and was followed by an MTV
video crew when he attended the Oct. 2009
Human Rights Campaign dinner, in which
President Obama was the keynote speaker.
MTV crews filmed another cast mem-
ber at the Washington Blade’s then offic-
es in the National Press Building as she
worked as a Blade photographer.

‘Don’t Ask’ repeal is year’s top story
Rollercoaster fight ends
with Obama’s signature

The passage of legislation to end the
17-year-old ban on service by open gays
in the U.S. military after a year-long fight
makes the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” saga
the story of the year for 2010.
Throughout the course of the year, sup-
porters of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal
endured a rollercoaster ride during which
many observers predicted efforts to lift the
military’s gay ban would end in failure.
In January, President Obama set up
the path for repeal in his State of the
Union address.
“This year, I will work with Congress and
our military to finally repeal the law that de-
nies gay Americans the right to serve the
country they love because of who they are,”
Obama said. “It’s the right thing to do.”
Efforts to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”
got a significant boost in February dur-
ing a Senate Armed Services Committee
hearing when Chairman of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen announced that
he personally supports the service of
openly gay people in the U.S. military.
“It is my personal belief that allowing
gays and lesbians to serve openly would
be the right thing to do,” Mullen said. “No
matter how I look at the issue, I cannot es-
cape being troubled by the fact that we
have in place a policy which forces young
men and women to lie about who they are
in order to defend their fellow citizens.”
Mullen’s support for ending “Don’t
Ask, Don’t Tell” is seen by many as the
lynchpin that ultimately led to repeal of
the law because he is an authoritative
voice in the military and was seen as out-
side the influence of LGBT advocates.
During the same hearing, Defense Sec-
retary Robert Gates unveiled plans to es-
tablish a Pentagon working group study of
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” that would determine
the best way to implement repeal of the
law should Congress should take action.
Gates appointed Jeh Johnson, the Pen-
tagon’s general counsel, and Gen. Carter
Ham, commander of U.S. Army Europe,
as co-chairs of the working group, and di-
rected them to produce a study by Dec. 1.
At the same hearing, U.S. senators
opposed to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” re-
peal expressed consternation over plans
to move forward and Mullen’s declared
support for allowing gays to serve openly
in the armed forces. Sen. John McCain
(R-Ariz.) said he was “deeply disappoint-
ed” by Gates’ statement and the defense
secretary’s plans to move forward with
a study to determine how to implement
repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” as op-
posed to whether it should be repealed.
As the study on implementing an end
to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was underway,
those seeking to end the law made plans
President Obama ended the year on a high note by signing repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ on Dec. 22.
to pass a repeal of the law as part of
major defense budget legislation pend-
ing before Congress as part of the fis-
cal year 2011 defense authorization
bill. In 1993, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was
enacted into law as part of the defense
authorization bill and LGBT advocates
believed attaching a measure as part of
defense spending legislation would bol-
ster chances for success of repeal.
But the path to passage of repeal en-
countered a significant roadblock in April
when Gates wrote a letter to Congress
saying he’s “strongly opposed” to any leg-
islative change to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”
before the Pentagon study is complete.
In May, the House attached the repeal
measure as part of the defense authori-
zation bill as an amendment by a vote of
234-194 before approving the legislation
as a whole. On the same day, the Senate
Armed Services Committee did the same
to its version of the bill before reporting it
out to the Senate floor.
On the House floor, Rep. Patrick Mur-
phy (D-Pa.), an Iraq war veteran and the
sponsor of repeal legislation, urged his
colleagues to approve an end to the mili-
tary’s gay ban.
Following the votes, the prospects
for “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal seemed
bright. But the efforts to move forward with
the legislation were stymied as the Senate
didn’t take up the measure for months. In
July, McCain objected to a motion to pro-
ceed to the defense authorization bill upon
lawmakers’ return from August recess.
In September, Senate Majority Leader
Harry Reid (D-Nev.) file cloture to proceed
on the defense authorization bill regardless
of the objections from any other senator.
At first, many LGBT advocates were
confident that 60 votes were present in
the U.S. Senate to proceed to defense
legislation over McCain’s objection. But
this support began to crumble away as
many U.S. senators said they disap-
proved of the limited number of amend-
ments that would be allowed.
On the Senate floor, Sen. Susan Col-
lins (R-Maine), who voted for the repeal
amendment in committee, was among
those expressing discontent over the
procedural conditions for the defense
authorization.
The motion to proceed on the defense
authorization bill failed 56-43, four votes
short of the 60 votes necessary to pro-
ceed with the legislation. Reid pledged
to bring up the legislation again, but the
bill’s fate was uncertain.
When Republicans took control of the
House in the November elections, it be-
came clear that Congress needed to act
before the end of the year.
With the legislative route to end-
ing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in limbo, an-
other route to end the military’s gay ban
opened up in September when a Califor-
nia federal court ruled that the law was
unconstitutional in the case of Log Cabin
Republicans v. United States.
In October, U.S. District Court Judge
Virginia Phillips affirmed her earlier rul-
ing by issuing an injunction enjoining the
U.S. government from the enforcement
of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
The U.S. Justice Department ap-
pealed the decision to the U.S. Ninth
Circuit Court of Appeals and asked for
a stay in the injunction, arguing that the
Pentagon needs time to implement a re-
peal of the law.
On Oct. 21, the Ninth Circuit granted
the stay in the injunction, ending the
eight-day period in which gays could
serve openly in the U.S. military.
But the court action put increased
pressure on Congress to repeal “Don’t
Ask, Don’t Tell” before the year was out.
White House Press Secretary Robert
Gibbs maintained Congress should re-
peal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” legislatively
before the courts strike down the statute
to provide the Pentagon more wiggle-
room with implementation.
Efforts to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t
Tell” received another significant boost
on Nov. 30 when the Pentagon finally
released its study and found that repeal
could be implemented with low risk to the
armed forces over the long term.

results of survey sent out to 400,000

service members regarding openly gay
people in the U.S. military. Of the more
than 115,000 who responded, 70 per-
cent said they believed repeal would
have a positive, mixed or no effect on a
unit’s ability to get the job done.
Hopes were high that with the Penta-
gon report, the Senate would be able to
move forward with the defense authori-
zation and “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal.
But those hopes were dashed on Dec.
9 when a motion to proceed on the de-
fense authorization bill failed 57-40.
Immediately following the vote, Sen.
Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Col-
lins called a news conference and an-
nounced they would introduce stand-
alone “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” legislation
— a move seen by many as a “Hail Mary”
pass to make repeal happen before the
end of the year.
With limited time remaining in the lame
duck session, the U.S. House on Dec.
15 approved “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” yet
again as a standalone measure by a vote
250-175. The move enabled the House
to send the legislation to the Senate as
“privileged” bill, shaving off the first 30
hours of debate that would have other-
wise been needed in the Senate.
After the Senate approved the extension
of the Bush-era tax cuts, repeal advocates
became optimistic that 60 votes were pres-
ent to support the legislation as Sens. Scott
Brown (R-Mass.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alas-
ka), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) signaled
they would support repeal.
On Dec. 18, repeal advocates finally
cleared the last major hurdle for “Don’t
Ask, Don’t Tell” when the Senate invoked
cloture on the legislation by a vote of 63-
33. On the same day, the Senate agreed to
final passage of the bill by a vote of 65-31.
LGBT advocates heralded the Sen-
ate vote — the first time Congress has
approved a pro-gay bill as a standalone
measure — as an unprecedented ac-
complishment for LGBT Americans.
President Obama brought to a close
on Dec. 22 the legislative journey to end
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” when he signed
the repeal legislation into law.

The story of the year was repeal of
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” but there were
many other big stories that kept us busy
this year. Here are the rest of the top 10.
#2 Youth suicides
lead to “It Gets
Better” Campaign
The suicide of Tyler Clementi, whose room-
mate set up an Internet-connected camera
to spy on him, helped bring national attention
to anti-LGBT bullying.
A rash of suicides committed by gay
youths throughout the country this year
prompted the “It Gets Better” campaign in
which prominent U.S. officials and LGBT
leaders advise teens struggling with their
sexual orientation that their lives will improve.
Four gay youths took their lives in Sep-
tember, reportedly after they had been
bullied because of their sexual orienta-
tion. Among those who committed sui-
cide was Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old
Rutgers University freshman who leaped
off the George Washington Bridge con-
necting New York and New Jersey.
In response to the suicides, Dan Sav-
age, a gay Seattle, Wash.-based activist,
founded the “It Gets Better” project, an
online video channel in which U.S. officials
and LGBT leaders urge youth to look to
a brighter future. President Obama was
among the officials to appear in a video.
#3 Democrats get
clobbered in midterms #5 CDC: 1 in 5 gay

Democrats this year sustained heavy
losses in the mid-term elections and lost
control of the U.S. House to Republicans,
which will likely kill LGBT rights advanc-
es in Congress for at least two years.
Republicans claimed 63 seats in a re-
sult that will lead to the ascent of Rep.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was demoted
in November, after Republicans picked up a
whopping 63 House seats, flipping control of
the chamber.
John Boehner (R-Ohio), who scored a
“0” in the Human Rights Campaign’s
most recent congressional scorecard,
as House speaker. Democrats retained
control of the U.S. Senate, but will have
a reduced majority of 53 seats.
Still, the LGBT community enjoyed
one bright spot in the election through
the win of David Cicilline, a gay mayor
of Providence, R.I., to the House. Upon
the start of the 112th Congress in Janu-
ary, Cicilline will become the fourth sitting
openly gay member of Congress.
#4 Proposition 8
court battle
California’s Proposition 8, the ballot mea-
sure that amended the state’s constitution
to halt gay marriage, has been a non-stop
battle in the court of law — and the court of
public opinion — since it passed in 2008.
A federal lawsuit seeking to overturn
the ban, led by famed attorneys Ted Ol-
son and David Boies, advanced in August,
when U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn
Walker ruled Prop 8 unconstitutional.
But rather than allowing gay couples
to resume marrying in California, Walker
issued a stay on his ruling pending the
outcome of inevitable appeals. While
California state leaders, including Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, refused to de-
fend the law, the “Yes on 8” campaign
challenged the ruling as expected.
A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit
U.S. Court of Appeals heard arguments in
the appeal on Dec. 6, in which supporters
of the ban argued that gay marriage “will
make children prematurely preoccupied
with issues of sexuality.” The appeals pan-
el is expected to issue its decision in 2011.
Nineteen percent of men who have
sex with men in a study of 21 U.S. cit-
ies was found to be infected with HIV
and nearly half did not know they were
infected, according to a report released

this year by the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
“This study’s message is clear: HIV ex-
acts a devastating toll on men who have
sex with men in America’s major cities, and
yet far too many of those who are infected
don’t know it,” said Kevin Fenton, director
of the CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS,
Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention.
The report, published in September,
shows that among the men who have sex
with men, or MSM, participating in the 21-
city study, young MSM and MSM of color
were least likely to know their HIV status.

Oy! It’s New Year’s resolu-
tions time again.
How about going to the gym
more often, your ever-so-helpful
boyfriend asks. Your girlfriend
wonders if you could be less
of a Crackberry addict, and
though you worked 24/7 to save
the world in 2010, every good
cause wants you to be even
more helpful in the new year.
This hits LGBTQ people where
we live. Along with the issues that
straight people deal with (from
the ridiculous to the sublime)
when making New Year’s resolu-
tions, we’ll wrestle with everything
from should I resolve to come out
to my boss, drink less in bars, or
work to stop bullying of queer
students in 2011.
The ancient Romans believed
in Janus, the god of beginnings
who had two faces (one looking
back and one looking forward).
On New Year’s, they gave Janus
presents so their next 12 months
would be good.

Re: “Marriage in Maryland?”
(news, Dec. 17)
I am writing in response
to the recent piece on the ef-
forts to advance marriage for
same-sex couples in Maryland.
The article seemed to suggest
that the newly enhanced LGBT
Caucus is not helping to push
through to the finish line on this
important issue.
As an advocate doing the
work each day in Maryland, we
have no better partners than
our gay and lesbian legislators.
Each has played a very impor-
tant role not only in helping to
lobby on behalf of the many bills
that we have worked on over
the years, but also in educating
their colleagues on the day-to-
day concerns of our community.
Having out legislators makes
a difference. LGBT people live
in every area of our state and
yet have not always been rep-

book, making and vowing to
keep our resolutions, knowing
our resolve will last until our next
status update.
Oscar Wilde, the quintessen-
tial queer, knew this when only
birds tweeted. “Good resolu-
tions are simply checks that
men draw on a bank where they
have no account,” he said.
“The only way to spend New
Year’s Eve is either quietly with
friends or in a brothel,” the gay poet
W.H. Auden said about spending
Dec. 31 agog in resolutions.
I love Auden, but I don’t quite
see myself hanging in a brothel
during the holidays. I’ll spend
New Year’s Eve with friends do-
ing what we always do, making
resolutions on matters silly and
solemn. Dear Reader, I’d like to
share with you my New Year’s
resolutions for myself and the
queer community.
• In 2011, I’ll move on from
Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and So-
phia. The clothes are so ‘80s,
we’re past the oughts and our
queer moms are our Facebook
friends.
• Patience is a virtue, my
grandmother always said, when
she’d encourage me to be more
resented in the halls where de-
cisions are made every day that
have a real impact on our lives.
The LGBT Caucus has helped to
ensure that our voices are heard.
We are proud to go into the
2011 legislative session with
seven openly gay and lesbian
legislators standing by our side.
They are already working with
us to have the tough conversa-
tions with those folks we need
to vote with us. They are already
educating their colleagues on
how this bill affects them per-
sonally, as well as the commu-
nity at large.
We are proud to count the
LGBT Caucus as partners in the
important fights ahead.

Re: “A momentous day” (blog
post by Kevin Naff, Dec. 18)
Ending DADT is not just
about the troops in the military
per se. It is about being out in a
group of your peers.
It’s awfully hard to hate peo-
tolerant of the foibles of oth-
ers. Unfortunately, patience is
a virtue with which I’ve never
been afflicted. But during the
new year, I’ll aim to be more pa-
tient with other people. I won’t
scream at the TV when my gay-
dar tells me the actress on the
talk show is a closeted queer
or tell my gay male friend he’s
hurting not only himself but all of
us by not coming out at his job.
Maybe their careers could be
hurt if they were openly queer,
I’ll say to myself.
• The next time my “liberal”
cousin tells me, “it’s great that
you’re gay, but I hope Evan (her
son) isn’t. It would be too hard,”
I won’t say, “Hard? For Evan or
for you?”
• When a “progressive,”
hetero poet says I should treat
my queerness as a “teachable
moment,” I won’t sigh and turn
away from her. It gets old fast,
but as long as there is homopho-
bia, we queers will be placed in
the role of “educators.”
• My magnanimity won’t end
there. I’ll even forgive Oprah for
recently going to such pains to
deny being queer that she told
Barbara Walters, “I’m not even
kind of lesbian.” I won’t say
something snarky like “I’m not
ple you know and respect. It’s
awfully easy for the talibangeli-
cals and the pope to demonize
“those [people].”

the eight brave Republican
senators who voted for repeal.
They also made it happen. We
should all send thank you e-

I’m glad DADT has finally
been repealed, and it’s a big
step toward equality, but I really
wish the Democratic leadership
had called for a floor vote on the
Domestic Partnership Benefits
& Obligations Act.
Of course they could still do
this seeing as how it already
passed out of committee in the
House and Senate, but at this
point the Senate isn’t going to
pass any more pro-LGBT leg-
islation. If the House passed
the bill it would at least lay
the groundwork for future pas-

brace “Glee,” dancing, Home
Depot, new spouses and the
other joys of queer life in 2011.

The forecast

The real estate forecast for 2011 could
not be brighter in the Washington Metro
area. The employment rate is improving
and interest rates, while ticking up slight-
ly, remain the lowest in history. In many
areas one can buy a home with an FHA
loan with only 3.5% down, have the seller
cover closing costs, and pay a monthly
mortgage for what it costs to rent.
Here is a good example: My listing
at 333 Mount Vernon Avenue is priced at
$429,000 and is in the popular Del Ray
neighborhood of Alexandria. It is walk-
ing distance to the Braddock Road Metro
and has 2 bedrooms, one bath, a deck,
and a finished lower level. Parking is
never a problem.
With a 3.5% down payment, a buyer
would be financing $414,000.
Purchasers can ask the seller to con-
tribute 3% toward their closing costs
which means the buyer will only need
to come up with a little over $15,000.
Additionally, purchasers can be gift-
ed the money for down payments or
closing costs from friends or family
members. An individual can gift up to
$13,000 to another individual without
paying the gift tax. If a couple is pur-
chasing a property together, they can
each accept $13,000 from the same
donor, thus $26,000 can be gifted with-
out paying the gift tax.
To borrow $414,000 the interest rate
for FHA is a bit less than 4.75% with no
points which equals a principal and inter-
est payment of $2,160.
Taxes on the property are $280 a
month and insurance about $40.
The total payment is $2,480 per month
but will feel like $2,000 because of the
current tax structure and the tax savings
you would realize from being a home-
owner. Renting a townhome in the same
area runs about $2000.
There are many examples of be-
ing able to own for the cost of renting
throughout the metro area. The numbers
work a bit better when buying a property
that is not a condo. Alexandria is one
area where you can find such properties
that are very close to metro.
If you are someone who has not owned
before, there is no better time than now to
purchase. The risk of falling prices in our
areas is going by the wayside as fore-
closures and short sales are becoming
a very small share of our current hous-
ing stock. If you currently own a prop-
erty you have outgrown now is the time
to move up while prices are still reason-
able. It is likely that your smaller home
will sell faster than what you are hoping
to buy. Don’t procrastinate! Let 2011 be
the year you make the smart investment
in a new home.

• Mild rash (redness and itching) without other symptoms sometimes occurs in patients taking
REYATAZ, most often in the first few weeks after the medicine is started, and usually goes away

• If you have liver disease, including hepatitis B or C, it may
get worse when you take anti-HIV medicines like REYATAZ.
• Kidney stones have been reported in patients taking REYATAZ.
Signs or symptoms of kidney stones include pain in your side,
blood in your urine, and pain when you urinate.
• Some patients with hemophilia have increased bleeding problems
with protease inhibitor medicines like REYATAZ.
• Changes in body fat have been seen in some patients taking anti-HIV medicines.
Fight HIV your way.
The cause and long-term effects are not known at this time.
• Gallbladder disorders (including gallstones and gallbladder inflammation) have been
reported in patients taking REYATAZ.
Other common side effects of REYATAZ taken with other anti-HIV medicines include: nausea;
headache; stomach pain; vomiting; diarrhea; depression; fever; dizziness; trouble sleeping;
numbness, tingling, or burning of hands or feet; and muscle pain.
You should take REYATAZ once daily with food (a meal or snack). Swallow the capsules whole; do
not open the capsules. You should take REYATAZ and your other anti-HIV medicines exactly as

What is REYATAZ?
REYATAZ is a prescription medicine used with other anti-HIV medicines to treat
people who are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is the
virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). REYATAZ is a
type of anti-HIV medicine called a protease inhibitor. HIV infection destroys CD4+
(T) cells, which are important to the immune system. The immune system helps
fight infection. After a large number of (T) cells are destroyed, AIDS develops.
REYATAZ helps to block HIV protease, an enzyme that is needed for the HIV
virus to multiply. REYATAZ may lower the amount of HIV in your blood, help your
body keep its supply of CD4+ (T) cells, and reduce the risk of death and illness
associated with HIV.
Does REYATAZ cure HIV or AIDS?
REYATAZ does not cure HIV infection or AIDS. At present there is no cure for
HIV infection. People taking REYATAZ may still get opportunistic infections or other
conditions that happen with HIV infection. Opportunistic infections are infections
that develop because the immune system is weak. Some of these conditions are
pneumonia, herpes virus infections, and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC)
infections. It is very important that you see your healthcare provider regularly
while taking REYATAZ.
REYATAZ does not lower your chance of passing HIV to other people through
sexual contact, sharing needles, or being exposed to your blood. For your
health and the health of others, it is important to always practice safer sex by
using a latex or polyurethane condom or other barrier to lower the chance of sexual
contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. Never use or share dirty needles.
Who should not take REYATAZ?
Do not take REYATAZ if you:

are taking certain medicines. (See “What important information should I
know about taking REYATAZ with other medicines?”) Serious life-threatening
side effects or death may happen. Before you take REYATAZ, tell your
healthcare provider about all medicines you are taking or planning to take.
These include other prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins,
and herbal supplements.

is atazanavir sulfate. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of
ingredients in REYATAZ. Tell your healthcare provider if you think you have
had an allergic reaction to any of these ingredients.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before I take REYATAZ?
Tell your healthcare provider:

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known if
REYATAZ can harm your unborn baby. Pregnant women have experienced
serious side effects when taking REYATAZ with other HIV medicines called
nucleoside analogues. You and your healthcare provider will need to decide
if REYATAZ is right for you. If you use REYATAZ while you are pregnant, talk
to your healthcare provider about the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry.

If you are breast-feeding. You should not breast-feed if you are HIV-positive
because of the chance of passing HIV to your baby. Also, it is not known if
REYATAZ can pass into your breast milk and if it can harm your baby. If you
are a woman who has or will have a baby, talk with your healthcare provider
about the best way to feed your baby.

If you have liver problems or are infected with the hepatitis B or C virus.

Swallow the capsules whole. Do not open the capsules. Take REYATAZ at
the same time each day.

If you are taking antacids or didanosine (VIDEX® or VIDEX® EC), take
REYATAZ 2 hours before or 1 hour after these medicines.

If you are taking medicines for indigestion, heartburn, or ulcers
such as AXID® (nizatidine), PEPCID AC® (famotidine), TAGAMET®
(cimetidine), ZANTAC® (ranitidine), AcipHex® (rabeprazole), NEXIUM®
(esomeprazole), PREVACID® (lansoprazole), PRILOSEC® (omeprazole),
or PROTONIX® (pantoprazole), talk to your healthcare provider.

Do not change your dose or stop taking REYATAZ without first talking

When your supply of REYATAZ starts to run low, get more from your
healthcare provider or pharmacy. It is important not to run out of REYATAZ.
The amount of HIV in your blood may increase if the medicine is stopped for
even a short time.

If you miss a dose of REYATAZ, take it as soon as possible and then take
your next scheduled dose at its regular time. If, however, it is within 6 hours
of your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Wait and take the next dose
at the regular time. Do not double the next dose. It is important that you
do not miss any doses of REYATAZ or your other anti-HIV medicines.

If you take more than the prescribed dose of REYATAZ, call your
healthcare provider or poison control center right away.
Can children take REYATAZ?
Dosing recommendations are available for children 6 years of age and older for
REYATAZ Capsules. Dosing recommendations are not available for children from
3 months to less than 6 years of age. REYATAZ should not be used in babies under
the age of 3 months.
What are the possible side effects of REYATAZ?
The following list of side effects is not complete. Report any new or continuing
symptoms to your healthcare provider. If you have questions about side effects,
ask your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider may be able to help you
manage these side effects.
The following side effects have been reported with REYATAZ:

mild rash (redness and itching) without other symptoms sometimes occurs
in patients taking REYATAZ, most often in the first few weeks after the
medicine is started. Rashes usually go away within 2 weeks with no change
in treatment. Tell your healthcare provider if rash occurs.

severe rash: In a small number of patients, a rash can develop that is
associated with other symptoms which could be serious and potentially
cause death.
If you develop a rash with any of the following symptoms stop using
REYATAZ and call your healthcare provider right away:

Steve Clemons reads a lot. He’s never fully
caught up on the thousands of e-mails he gets
daily and he’s inundated with what he calls a
“gusher” of information. But it’s part of what gives
his blog, the Washington Note, its sharp edge
and keeps him in demand as a commentator on
cable news.
“It’s constant and I do a pretty good job of
keeping up with it, absorbing information quickly,”
he says. “So the chances are high that I will know
an angle or a twist to ask about. You gotta be
informed — that’s a big part of it. If not, you’ll be
derivative.”
Clemons started his blog with his friend Josh
Marshall in 2004 as an outlet for his dual passion
of foreign policy and economic “stuff,” that he
wasn’t doing much with at his day job as a senior
fellow at the American Strategy Program at the
New America Foundation, a centrist think tank
he co-founded 12 years ago. He got on the national radar quickly and was named a
blog favorite this year by Time magazine. A well-timed scoop in 2006 about former
United Nations Ambassador John Bolton and a cancelled hearing earned him more
than 6 million hits in a single day.
Clemons, a 48-year-old Bartlesville, Okla., native, has been in Washington 16
years. Before that, he spent 14 years in Los Angeles where he directed the Japan
America Society of Southern California.
His philosophy on being openly gay is, “I don’t shy away from it, but I don’t wear
it on my sleeve either.”
He and his partner, Andrew Oros, have been together 19 years and live in Dupont
Circle with their dog, Oakley, a Weimaraner.
Clemons enjoys blogging, running, biking, fishing, reading and selling small

How long have you been out and who
was the hardest person to tell?
Since 1992. One of my mentors, Chalm-
ers Johnson, was tough for me but went
well. Also my husband’s mom, whose sis-
ter was spreading rumors that I was hav-

course — the affair was with her son.

couple of other gay couples in August 2008
and on-looking tourists applauding like crazy
when my husband and I kissed. In 1996 had
an LTC-BBQ (long-term commitment barbe-
cue at my father-in-law’s. Also very cool.)
What non-gay issue are you most
passionate about?
Improving the direction of U.S. for-
eign policy — getting Israel/Palestine
resolved, ending the Afghanistan war,
getting Iran on a non-nuclear course,
normalizing relations with Cuba, etc.
What historical outcome would you
change?
I would have preferred Monica Lewinsky
to have an affair with Bill Clinton after he was
president rather than during his time in of-
fice. We might then have gotten Israel/Pal-
estine two-state solution in place and have
resolved the North Korea nuclear mess ear-
ly. This in turn might have helped Al Gore
get elected over Bush, preempted the inva-
sion of Iraq and probably wouldn’t have had
the same Iran challenge we have today.
What’s been the most memorable pop
culture moment of your lifetime?
I went as “media” to the HRC dinner fea-
turing President Obama. During “media avail-
ability” I met the cast of “Glee” as well as Lady
Gaga while waiting to meet Matthew Shepard’s
parents. I didn’t know who “Glee” and Lady
Gaga were (though in retrospect I had heard
Gaga’s music — just didn’t know the name of
the singer) and only recognized Jane Lynch
from “Julie and Julia.” Now I love Gaga and
“Glee” obsessively. Other cool thing is that
Darren Star, creater of “Beverly Hills 90210,”
“Melrose Place,” and “Sex in the City,” was
my best friend in college. Took Darren to the
White House Correspondents dinner this year
and sat him next to Zbigniew Brzezinski, Brent
Scowcroft, Denis McDonough and Joshua
Marshall. It was really hot when Bradley Coo-
per, Cynthia Nixon and other Darren discover-
ies came over to schmooze our table.
On what do you insist?
Active engagement in life and causes.

things to happen.
What was your last Facebook post or

very, very big points across the board if
DADT passes the Senate tomorrow. This
is a big deal. There will be great fanfare

Remember that their job is to eventu-
ally put the LGBT business out of busi-
ness, not become too comfortable with
the status quo struggles. We want equal-
ity, fairness, an end to discrimination —
and we need to keep the pressure up all
the time to move our rights forward.
What would you walk across hot
coals for?
An end to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (ouch,
those are hot!), gay marriage in America,
saving anyone in Matthew Shepard’s
shoes, my friends in need, my husband.
What gay stereotype annoys you most?
The notion that gay men are pedo-
philes or that effeminacy and being gay
are in lockstep.
What’s your favorite gay movie?
“Longtime Companion” (“Another
Country” comes in close second)
What’s the most overrated social custom?
Wearing ties — can we just get rid of
them all?
What trophy or prize do you most covet?
Any national bass fishing trophy —

That it was really, really all going to be OK.

Because Washington is the sun around
which politicos here and around the world or-

Films with LGBT themes or those with
likely interest to gays came out this year
in a flood tide.
This profusion came on the heels of a
banner year in 2009, led by such A-list
hits as “A Single Man,” gay first-time di-
rector Tom Ford’s stunning adaptation of
the slender novel by gay author Christo-
pher Isherwood.
But since “A Single Man” went into
wide release only in 2010 (it came out
last December simply to qualify for Os-
car noms), it really qualifies as a film to
be mentioned here. It stars Colin Firth —
now also lionized for a likely Oscar win
for 2010 as Best Actor for his role as King
George VI in what may in fact be this
year’s best film, “The King’s Speech.” But
this earlier film traces one day in the life
of a middle-aged suicidal man George
Falconer, despondent over the death of
his long-time lover Jim in an auto acci-
dent eight months earlier.
Fashion designer Tom Ford himself
financed his first film as a director, on
a modest $7 million budget, but he has
produced a work that is luminous to see,
of heart-breaking beauty on the screen,
and with an ending both unexpected and
perfect. It won the award for outstanding
film in wide release at the GLAAD Media
Awards this January. This is a must-see
film, now available on DVD.
Julianne Moore, who co-starred in “A
Single Man,” also co-stars in “The Kids Are
All Right,” a hit comedy-drama, helmed
by out lesbian director Lisa Cholodenko
who together with Stuart Blumberg wrote
the screenplay. All three are nominated for
Golden Globes this year, with the winners
to be announced on Jan. 16: Moore for
Best Actress, as is the film itself for Best
Picture and Best Screenplay.
One of the Sundance 2010 breakout
hits, it won a large audience in general
release this summer with a story featur-
ing Moore as Jules, the housewifey-half
of a long-time lesbian couple with An-
nette Bening as the doctor-breadwinner
Nic. Though it’s never made clear if they
are actually married, Jules refers to her-
self as “married.” And they each have
given birth to a child — now teenagers
— using the same anonymous sperm do-
nor. The kids call him their “donor dad”
and when they track him down, he turns
up in the not-so-happy home of Nic and
Jules in the person of bohemian motor-
cyclist Paul, played wonderfully well by
Mark Ruffalo, also rightly nominated for a
Golden Globe, as Best Supporting Actor.
The film has already won a raft of New
York Film Critics awards and looks like a
strong Oscar contender. It was released
on DVD and Blu-ray last month.
After years of distribution obstacles,
“I Love You, Phillip Morris” finally hit
screens. Deemed “too gay” by some po-
tential backers, it finds big-name actors
Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor locking
lips and much more in this over-the-top
but real-life story of true love launched
inside a prison cell.
Carrey with rubber-faced and hyper-
drive glee plays Steven Jay Russell, a
seemingly happily married Christian-right

cop who switched sides to become a
self-described “gay, gay, gay” con artist,
who meets sweetly dim, self-described
“blond, blue-eyed and queer” Phillip
Morris (McGregor) in the Big House, and
after a brief prison courtship Phillip tells
him, “enough romance, let’s fuck.” And
they do. And then Steven escapes from
prison four times and runs through mul-
tiple impersonations and grand cons to
be reunited with Phillip.
Also launched at Sundance but then
delayed for release due to various legal
battles as well as uncertainty over how to
market such a candid depiction of same-
sex sex, this was finally released earlier
this month, but although not yet in wide
distribution, to the surprise of many it has
actually been posting sizable grosses.
Though not without its flaws, it should be
seen for sure, especially for the knock-
it-out-of-the-park performance of Carrey
and the more-subdued-yet-equally effec-
tive screen presence of McGregor.
The ubiquitous actor James Franco —
already nominated for a Golden Globe
Best Actor nod this year for “127 Hours”
and an almost certain Oscar nominee for
that role — plays gay one more time in
“Howl.” After playing the slain San Fran-
cisco politician’s lover in “Milk,” this time
Franco stars as gay poet Allen Ginsberg
in an “indie” biopic by gay writer-direc-
tors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman
about the author of the Beat anthem
“Howl” and the 1957 trial to contest its
publication as obscene.
With a Golden Globe nom as Best
Musical, the uber-garish “Burlesque”
stars ultra-diva Cher and budding-diva
Christina Aguilera and was written and
directed by openly gay Steve Antin, once
David Geffen’s boyfriend. So of course
it’s gay catnip on celluloid. Aguilera
plays Ali, small-town girl with big voice,
who comes to an L.A. strip club, has a
G-rated romance with a “metrosexual”
club bartender hottie played by real-life
but straight hottie Cam Gigandet.
Cher co-stars (her first screen role
since appearing as herself in 2003’s so-
so “Stuck on You”) as former club dancer
Tess, now struggling to keep the place
open. Stanley Tucci plays the nightclub’s
manager and Tess’s gay best friend, re-
prising his similar role with Meryl Streep
from “The Devil Wears Prada.” Released
during Thanksgiving week, it has earned
mixed reviews but respectable crowds.
There are gay films galore released
during 2010 but not marketed for main-
stream audiences like fetish-themed gay
romantic comedy “Bear City,” which was
screened briefly in Washington earlier
this year and is already out on DVD.
Young twink Tyler (a very attractive Joe
Conti) finds other twinks to be turn-offs,
and just as opposites are said to attract,
he pines only for the hirsute and hefty.
The beardless chub and fur-chaser soon
discovers New York’s “bear scene” and is
literally sucked in. Make no mistake, the
film features hot daddies and is ripe with
raunch with full-frontal sex scenes. It is also
funny and reminds us that bodies comes in
all shapes and sizes and so does desire.
A similar theme comes in a documen-
tary “The Adonis Factor,” a film by Christo-
pher Hines that focuses on the body-con-
scious world of gay men, where “lookism”
is so often decisive and face-lifts and pec-
implants become serious options to stay
in the game. It comes with a price tag of
course, and not merely financial, to pay
for the dermatologists, plastic surgeons
and bodybuilding steroids. The film is
now available on DVD and follows up
Hines’ 2009 feature “The Butch Factor” on
what it means to be gay and a man today.
Finally, several other gay-indies also
deserve attention. “Strapped” blends
influences from David Lynch and gay
director Gus Van Sant’s “My Own Pri-
vate Idaho” as it follows a young hus-
tler played by Ben Bonenfant through
his successive one-night-stands into a
dark night of the soul. It’s a puzzle piece
as he becomes caught in a nightmare-
labyrinth and it will keep you tense until
the end when we begin to see through
his many masks, only one of which is as
“deep-throat Eddie.” See this one when it
is released on DVD next month.
Also worth seeing on DVD is “All
Boys,” — a Finnish documentary about
the ugly underbelly of the Czech gay-
porn industry by writer-director Markku
Heikkinen, a gripping reality-film showing
the highs and lows behind the sex-lives
of the gay-for-pay pretty boys of Eastern
Europe. One sad story is what happens
to Ruda who becomes porn star Aaron
Hawke and for three years also the per-
sonal property of porn producer Dan
Komar but who ends up alcoholic and
homeless. Seduced by their brief en-
counter with fame and possible fortune
and fueled by Viagra, these youths soon
discover how fleeting such porno-fame is
when they end up spat out after aging
out of their brief shelf life.

It was a strange year musically, one
that got rolling with a surreal all-star re-
make of “We Are the World” that had
fossils like Barbra Streisand and Gladys
Knight (where were they on the original?)
rubbing shoulders with younger acts and
found the Indigo Girls releasing a Christ-
mas album of all things.
And while the mainstream was abuzz
with new albums from Kanye and Eminem,
several gay releases got some notice.
The Scissor Sisters, featuring gay front
man Jake Shears, are, perhaps, the clos-
est thing the gay world has to the Black
Eyed Peas. On third album “Night Work,”
which dropped in June, lyrics like “I think
I need a rubber tonight” were splashed
over neo-disco and new wave beats

Local indie lesbian singer/songwriter
Mara Levi released her third album, “We Lis-
ten to Fools” (digital only release) in October.

It was, perhaps, Elton John’s least gay
album in years, but his recent collabora-
tion with forgotten vet Leon Russell, “The
Union,” resulted in a critical triumph. Roll-
ing Stone called the T Bone Burnett-pro-
duced disc worthy of the artists’ best work.
Taylor Swift may seem bland com-
pared to Lady Gaga but her country
crossover domination continued with this
year’s “Speak Now,” a savvy collection of
catchy hits.
Swedish diva Robyn — what is it with
the Swedes and dance music? — deliv-
ered the year’s best dance album with
“Body Talk,” a pummeling collection of
memorable club rattlers like “Fembot,”
“Dancing On My Own” and “Don’t Fuck-
ing Tell Me What To Do.”
Katy Perry, of “I Kissed a Girl” fame,
teamed up with pop masterminds Max
Martin and Dr. Luke for one of the year’s
best pop albums, “Teenage Dream,”
which dropped in August and topped
the Billboard album chart. It’s also up for
several Grammys.
Even with no new album out, Lady
Gaga kept things interesting, if occasion-
ally uneven, this year. Her “Telephone”
video with Beyonce was an epic, nearly
10-minute clip on a Michael Jackson-
scope scale, but her September D.C.

concert appearance drew mixed reviews
as did a half-hearted remix album. Look
for a new studio album from her in 2011.
Rhianna’s “Loud” dropped in Novem-
ber and continued her hit streak with
two No. 1 U.S. singles, “Only Girl (In the
World” and “What’s My Name?”
There was a new “Glee” soundtrack
album almost every month this year but
April’s “Power of Madonna” collection
was perhaps the most memorable. The
“Glee” juggernaut will surely continue in
the new year.
Electropop British gay-fronted group
Goldfrapp released its fifth studio album
“Head First” in March, featuring retro-’80s
sounds.
Gay Sigur Ros frontman Jonsi released
a solo effort in April, called “Go,” which
received mostly strong reviews and had a
strong chart showing in the U.S.
Gay singer/songwriter Rufus Wain-
wright dropped his sixth studio album
“All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu” in
April. It’s a classy and stripped-down
record that finds inspiration in Shake-
speare’s sonnets.
Melissa Etheridge, perhaps the most
famous lesbian rock star, released her
10th studio album “Fearless Love” in
April. It’s more rock-oriented than her last

few albums, which sometimes found her
veering way too close to snoozeville. It’s
great to hear her rocking out again.
Liza Minnelli released the little-noticed
“Confessions” in September, her first stu-
dio album in nearly 15 years.
The Indigo Girls were all over the
map with their surreal October release
“Holly Happy Days” which, despite its
nod to Hanukkah with a Woody Guthrie
cover featured several surprising nods
to Christianity such as the French carol
“Angels We Have Heard on High” and a
country version of “O Holy Night.” Annie
Lennox had one of the year’s more inter-
esting holiday albums with her “Christ-
mas Cornucopia.”
Adam Lambert, the gay “Idol” runner-
up, stayed busy this year with his first
tour, “Glam Nation,” which made a mem-
orable D.C. stop in June at the 9:30 club.
A live EP dropped earlier this month.
Look for a new studio album next year.
Cyndi Lauper, easily the world’s most
gay-friendly straight act, released a blues
album, “Memphis Blues,” in June and
earned solid reviews and a Grammy nom-
ination. Look for a live DVD from the tour,
which came to D.C. last month, in 2011.
It was a great year for Kylie Minogue
fans. Her 11th studio album “Aphrodite”
was released worldwide in June and this
month a Christmas EP was released on
iTunes. Single “All the Lovers” topped
the U.S. Dance Club chart and, though
Minogue has always been more popular
abroad, she still managed a decent show-
ing on the album charts with a No. 19
peak, her second-highest charter here.
Gay singer Clay Aiken went retro in
June with “Tried and True,” a standards
collection. Though the concept has
been run into the ground after umpteen
releases from Rod Stewart, Aiken’s the
kind of singer who, despite his youth,
has the vocal oomph to breathe new life
into these classics. His covers of “Can’t
Take My Eyes Off Of You” and “Mack the
Knife” are especially good. He soars on
the latter.
One of the year’s biggest disappoint-
ments was a dud from Christina Aguilera
called “Bionic,” another June release that
found the overwrought singer all over the
stylistic map with few memorable results.
The album bombed — it’s only halfway
to gold status in the U.S. six months after
its release.

This year has been one of the best for
LGBT visibility on television.
“Glee,” with two openly gay actors,
Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer, and some
compelling storylines for Colfer’s charac-
ter Kurt, led the pack.
Kurt’s storyline this season has rung
true. Almost sounding like it was ripped
from the headlines, Kurt has had to deal
with bullying from one of the football
players, leading up to his bully kissing
him and then threatening his life.
Kurt changed schools after this in-
cident and has finally found a possible
love interest of his own, with whom he
sang “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” in the
Christmas episode.
Lynch’s Sue Sylvester is still the woman
you love to hate, but has shown a more
human side this season which couldn’t
have been portrayed better than when
Sue dressed as the Grinch in the Christ-
mas episode and k.d. Lang sang “You’re
a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” in the back-
ground as she tried to steal Christmas.
There’s also Brittany and Santana, the
two Cheerios who said they had sex and
were shown making out this season. The
extent of their relationship is unknown, with
Brittany dating fellow glee clubber Artie.
FOX’s “Modern Family’s” Cam and
Mitchell had their first on-screen kiss
this season and the series brought home
several awards.
ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy’s” Callie
and Arizona had their share of ups and
downs this year, breaking up over wheth-
er they’d have kids then getting back
together until they broke up again when
Callie wouldn’t go to Africa with Arizona,
while spin-off “Private Practice” had an
episode about the “down low.“
HBO’s “True Blood’s” Lafayette got
a love interest this season with a witch
named Jesus and a there was little fan-
tasy flirting between Sam and Bill.
The show also featured three female
lesbian and bisexual characters with

Pam, the last of which was so popular,
actress Kristin Bauer was signed on as a
series regular.
One of the most surprising lead, queer
characters was Dr. Elanore O’Hara,
played by Eve Best, on Showtime’s
“Nurse Jackie.” This year it was revealed
she was bisexual when her on-again-off-
again girlfriend made an appearance.
CBS’s “The Good Wife” started off a
little slow with character Kalinda Shar-
ma’s sexuality. Hints had been dropped,
but Kalinda’s first kiss scene left a lot
open for interpretation. The show’s pro-
ducers have been quoted as saying that
having the characters kiss behind a door
was not out of “fear,” but so the storyline
could be developed more.

efforts among the year’s
theatrical bright spots

Despite a still-struggling economy, it’s
been a pretty good year for theater in the
D.C. area. Along with the crowd-pleasing
big musicals, there has been a wide va-
riety of riskier and more offbeat produc-
tions. Interestingly, the year that brought
marriage equality to the nation’s capital
also saw an unusually high number of
LGBT couples (some married, others
not) enjoying productive theatrical col-
laborations.
Ganymede Arts, D.C.’s only compa-
ny dedicated to the LGBT experience,
grabbed theatergoers’ attention with
two terrific musical productions in 2010:
“Naked Boys Singing” in the spring, and
more recently “Falsettos,” Lapine and
Williams’ gay-themed musical about love
and family in the time of AIDS.
Surely one of the harder working
folks in local theater, Ganymede’s gay
artistic director Jeffrey Johnson staged
both shows and played the lead, Mar-

drag persona Galactica act and “After
the Garden — Edie Beale LIVE at Reno
Sweeney” — locally and on tour. True to
industrious form, Johnson is closing the
year with a new non-lip syncing Galac-
tica cabaret show tonight at Noi’s Nook
on 14th Street, N.W.
Holly Twyford tested her range in
2010, playing a tap dancing pig in Ad-
venture Theatre’s summer production
“If You Give a Pig a Pancake.” Twyford,
an award-winning local actor who is
gay returned to children’s theater after a
long absence in order to give her young
daughter a chance to see what mommy
does for a living. More recently, Twyford
played Pamela, a boozy, country club
cougar in Signature’s premiere of Ken
Ludwig’s comedy “A Fox on the Fairway,”
a show to which her little girl was most
probably not invited.
In September, Factory 449 continued
building its reputation for impressive and
challenging work with Erik Ehn’s “The Saint
Plays,” an exploration of traditional saints
in contemporary settings. Directed and
produced respectively by John Moletress
and Rick Hammerly, both of whom are gay,
the ensemble production was beautifully

acted and imaginatively staged.
At Studio Theatre (a favorite with
Blade readers), gay director Serge Se-
iden drew excellent performances from
small casts in two plays featuring com-
plex, intergenerational relationships:
“Sixty Miles to Silver Lake,” and Tracey
Letts’ comedy “Superior Donuts.”
Many good things came from out of
town this year including the New York-
based, gay actor Nicholas Rodriguez.
Currently playing cowboy Curly in Arena
Stage’s hit production “Oklahoma!,” the
handsome young Broadway actor be-
came widely known for playing earnest-
but-sexy activist Nick Chavez, the third
man in a tumultuous gay love triangle on
TV’s “One Life to Live.” Rodriguez initially
came to Washington in the spring to play
Latin lover Fabrizio in Adam Guettel’s
gorgeous musical “The Light in the Pi-
azza” (also at Arena).
Veteran gay actor John Glover is
usually found in New York or L.A., but
in March he came to town and put his
stamp on the part of over-the-top opera
queen Mendy (a role originally created
by gay actor Nathan Lane) in Terrence
McNally’s “The Lisbon Traviatia.” The
production was part of the Kennedy
Center’s mini-festival “Terrence McNally’s
Nights at the Opera.”
Gay director José Luis Arellano Gar-
cía made the trip from Spain to Columbia
Heights to stage an earthy and athletic
production of Lope de Vega’s “El cabal-
lero de Olmedo” (“The Knight from Olm-
edo”) at Gala Hispanic Theatre. García’s
partner, David R. Peralto, provided a
varying pulse to the circa 1620 tragedy
with his own period-sounding composi-
tions and selected folk music.
For a short time in October, D.C. au-
diences were delighted with the brilliant
work of British director Declan Donnellan
and his longtime partner (professional
and personal) set designer Nick Ormer-
od. As part of the Chekhov International
Theatre Festival, the couple brought stel-
lar productions (performed in Russian by
fabulous Russian actors) of Chekhov’s
“Three Sisters” and an all-male produc-
tion of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” to
the Kennedy Center.
Local theater couple Christopher
Henley (Washington Shakespeare Com-
pany’s artistic director) and Jay Hardee
successfully continued their collabora-
tion on and off stage in 2010. In addition
to marrying in the fall, the talented pair
recently co-staged a strikingly inventive
production of “Richard III” in the com-
pany’s spanking new black box space
in Arlington’s Artisphere. Earlier this
year, Hardee directed Henley as “He,”
the embodiment of state-inflicted evil in
the world English language premiere of
Chilean playwright Marco Antonio de la
Parra’s “Every Young Woman’s Desire,”
an intense allegory of Pinochet’s brutal
dictatorship.
On April 8 at the Warner Theatre in
what was definitely one of the highlights
of the theater year, famed gay playwright
Terrence McNally, 70, warmly presented
the Helen Hayes Tribute to his “friend,
colleague and ex,” the even more fa-
mous gay playwright Edward Albee (the
pair were lovers in the 1960s). McNally
lauded Albee’s genius as evidenced by
a long list of extraordinary works, includ-
ing “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,”
“The Zoo Story,” “A Delicate Balance”
and more (Albee has multiple Tonys and
Pulitzers). At a small party the night be-
fore the awards, Albee, 82, shared with
the Blade his appreciation of the ener-
getic D.C. theater scene and its intelli-
gent audiences.

A few events for your
2011 social calendar

Plans are still being made but many of
the region’s signature annual LGBT events
have been penciled in for 2011, mostly —
but not always — in their usual slots.
The biggest out-of-the-norm loop will
be Reel Affirmations, Washington’s an-
nual LGBT film festival which has moved
from its usual October slot to April 28 to
May 7 (2011).
The 20-year-old festival staged by
the non-profit One in Ten has moved its
screening marathon because the eco-
nomic crash of 2008 and the resigna-
tion of its former director left it in the red
after the 2009 event. Three films were
shown in October but the main event was
bumped to 2011.
One in Ten has monthly selections now
at the D.C. JCC on 16th Street. Look for
“The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister”
on Jan. 21, “Children of God” on Feb. 11
and “You Should Meet My Son” on March
11. Screenings are at 7 and 9:15 p.m. on

Phasefest, the indie music festival
hosted each fall by lesbian bar Phase
1, will return with its fifth annual event.
Founder Angela Lombardi starts making
plans each year in January.
“I haven’t even started looking for
headliners yet,” she says. “Basically I get
through New Year’s and then start plan-
ning. I was just thinking today this is kind
of my last week of not worrying about
Phasefest. But we were really off the train
last year with MEN headlining and I hope
we have an even stronger year in 2011.

per.” The museum is open from 10

As the clock struck midnight on Jan.
1, 2010, CAGLCC turned 20 and the
Chamber went from an all-volunteer or-
ganization to welcome Mark Guenther
as executive director. Cheers! Happy
New Year! Get to work! And work we did.
CAGLCC is in the business of promot-
ing business — that of the LGBT commu-
nity and our allies and throughout 2010
opportunities for individuals to meet and
forge business relationships met high
demand and expectations.
The event for which CAGLCC is best
known, the monthly Networking Thurs-
days continued, except in February
when SNOWMAGGEDON accounted
for the first cancellation in CAGLCC his-
tory. Networking Thursdays connect our
members and guests and showcase a
new location each month in a relaxed,
informal setting. And yes, many business
deals are made over a cocktail or as the
result of an introduction.
Women’s Wednesdays, networking
evenings especially for women entrepre-
neurs and professionals, were a huge suc-
cess through the effort of Eileen Kessler,
OmniStudio and Eboné Bell, B.O.I. Mar-
keting and Promotions, who spearhead
the CAGLCC Women and Diversity Com-
mittee. These events are testament to the
power of female strength and energy.
Our Program and Events Committee,
co-chaired by J. Max Barger Esq., Acker-
man Legal PLLC, organizes Speed Net-
working, where attendees are coached
on networking techniques and, on aver-
age, make 15 new business contacts in
the course of a few hours. In March 2010,
more than 700 attended CAGLCC’s Third
Annual MEGA-Networking event, a tour
de force due in no small part to the support
of our community allies.
MasterMind Group (formerly TBAC,) of-
fers participants — the more studious types
— a weekly “think tank” led by Jay Vilar,
Plan A Consulting, to discuss business is-
sues from hiring and getting hired, making
more money, developing personal strengths
and of course, the “elevator pitch.”
CAGLCC Book Group, new to 2010,
meets every other month to discuss top-
ics that appeal to business profession-
als. This year’s selections included The
Knack (Brodsky and Burlingham,) The
Black Swan (Taleb,) and Drive (Pink.)
This year, CAGLCC membership in-
creased by 20 percent through word of
mouth referrals, marketing and social
media. But without the efforts of Joe
