DESCRIPTION

Last February 6, 2020 , we had our shooting at the Nursing

Amphitheater. We were there to comply our requirement on
Maternal and Child Health Nursing Skills Lab. Together with
my groupmates, we demonstrated . On our first exposure,
we were first oriented by our instructor about the do' and
dfon'ts on the course of our duty. Right after, she explained
to us what we're gonna do. Throughout the day, we took the
vital signs, heightand weight, gravida and parity of the new
patients, teen parent and follow up prenatal patients on our
assigned area. At the same time, our instructor also gave us
some lectures about obstetrics and gynecology. I also had
the chance to assist on the area of Ophthalmology clinic.
Since it was just our first time, we made many mistakes but
we were learning as time passes by.

On the second day, October 22 2019, we took the vital signs,

height and weight, gravida and parity of new patients,
follow up postnatal and follow up teen parent. At first, on
the morning, there were just few patients. But when it was
around 11am, there were many patients and it started to
become toxic. We were already tired that time but when we
saw that there were so many patients, we just continued
until all were finished. We also encountered a family of the
patient who put the blame on us when their name wasn't
called.

On the third day, October 23, 2019, we took the vital signs,
height and weight, gravida and parity of teen parent,
oncology and follow up prenatal patients. There were also
few patients in the morning and started to rise at around
11pm. We witnessed a mother who was transferred to a
hospital bed because she will be giving birth. Because of
that, the other stations were forced to transfer to our table.
That time there were so many patients and getting the
accurate information and vital signs were hard for us. Still,
we managed to work under pressure and finished assisting
those patients.

On the fourth and last day, October 24-25 2019, we were

required not to attend the diuty anymore since our clinical
instructor was not around.

FEELINGS
Before we had our duty, I was excited, at the same time,
nervous of what's gonna happen throughout the week. Since
that was our first exposure, we still do not have the idea
with what we will be doing. All we just knew was the topics
and concepts discussed to us during our lecture and also the
return demonstrations we have performed.

While on duty, I really felt that I was already a nurse that

time. The moment we were instructing the patients what to
do, getting the information needed and also coming up with
possible conclusion and interventions, I felt that all the
concepts that we have studied were really applied and I was
proud of myself for that. Even though there were mistakes, I
just thought it was really a part of learning and it's not
something I should overthink of. And also, since we
encountered different types of people with different
conditions, I felt that I should really be an observant, open
my heart to them, and assist them with their concerns.

On the other hand, I think those patients that we have

assisted were relieved because they were given the help
that they needed.

After this week's duty, honestly, I was relieved because I

can already rest after all the restless days and stressful
hours. At the same time, I was proud of myself for having
been able to survive the whole week of duty. At first, I
thought I will not make it because of my medical condition
but thankfully, everything went well. When our instructor
announced we will not have duty for two days, I had mixed
emotions. I felt happy because I can already rest but
thinking about the situation of the patients and also the
nurses to assist, it will be hard for them to handle the
situation. At the same time, our experience on that working
area was limited but even though it turned out that way, it
was all worth it.

EVALUATION
I think what was positive about the situation is that we were
trying to learn even though we made many mistakes. At the
same time, even though we already felt tired and dizzy, we
still worked with composure and were able to perform our
roles effectively. Lastly, I think the experience itself was
already considered positive for us since we were given the
chance to expose ourselves with the working area itself.

What was negative about the situation is that since it was

our first time, communicating with those people who's not
complying with rules was not that easy for us because we
thought it was a sign of disrespect if we answer back to
those patients. Also, since we have so many patients and
there is no interval between patients sometimes, we didn't
find the time to organize our things and apparatus in the
working area.

I think that since we were able to divide the roles of each

other, datas needed were acquired faster than if we were to
handle one patient per student. At the same time, we were
able to have the proper chanelling which is we didn't really
encounter so much misunderstanding. Also, information
were given to the patients properly through the use of
technology.

What didn't really went well is that since we were not

familiar with what to write for chief complains, we made
mistakes on that part of the patients chart.

With the help of Ma'am Chevelle Gaan, we were guided with

what actions to perform, what terms to write and how to
deal with patients properly. At the same time , Ate Ehm also
help us in times when we were unsure of what to do.

CONCLUSION
I think this would be a more positive experience for
everyone involved if all of us just enjoyed our experience in
the working area amidst of all the pressure and tireness.
Also, it will be a positive experience if everyone is open for
learning despite the mistakes we have made.

If I were to be faced with the same situation again, I will be

more organized with our working area for us to perform our
roles properly. Also, I will be studying everything that's
needed for us to learn at hand in order for me not to make
the same mistakes again.

The skills that I needed to develop in order for me to handle

the situation better are my communication and
organizational skills. If I would be more confident in dealing
with patients then I will be able to resolve their concerns
properly. Also, if I would be more organized then I will not
make the same mistakes I made before.
