UNI7: Understanding the creative media sector

TASK 1: CREATIVE MEDIA INDUSTRYS STATEMENT

Aaron Gordon NDMEDIA LEVEL 3 – Y2

The entire media sector is made up of many categories that each contribute to delivering
the best they can in their industries which are going through a process of Convergence.
These industries affected include, Film, Television, Radio, Animation, Interactive media,
Publishing, Press, Photo imaging, Advertising and Marketing.
As you can see there are many sectors involved in the industry and many works with each
other for the best outcome on projects.
An example of how they work together, film uses a wide variety of these as when a film is
being filmed or about to go out to the public several things should happen such as talking to
getting Television, radio, publishing, advertising, and marketing to help promote it these can
do the show by showing their trailers, talking about it, selling merchandise and having guest
stars on. This is a key feature that needs to happen for the film to be profitable and to get it
out there
The sectors are made up of private owners and sometimes public services this would include

 Multinationals – A company that operates in several countries this would include

Netflix and Disney+
 Independents – the BBC would be one as they are a UK based business
 Conglomerates – this would include Walt Disney as they have several distinct parts
 Voluntary – this would include channel 4 as they have training, apprenticeships, and
schemes
 Cross-media – this is where 2 or more companies would collabe together for
example The Beatles song ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ was played on the 1977 Saturday
Night Fever as its respective soundtrack.
 Diversification across platforms and content – this is how people view content and
platforms and how they do it whether it would be on a phone on the app store,
subscription, or display advertising.
Corporate ownership vertical and horizontal integration

These are businesses who has built an empire over the world this would include Comcast,
Warner, and CBS, these businesses over time have developed and expanded their
companies to many others taking over a majority of the TV industry.

As you can see in 2012 these companies had 90% of all media and it was only 6 companies
this shows huge domination in the industry, it also shows how well put together it was with
a range of genres and styles. Also, people who watch TV, Film, or Livestreams have come
across many of these companies and might not know they were corporate-owned.
As you can see Disney (Kids Channel) owns ESPN (Sports Channel), ABC (Reality-TV), and
Pixar (Kids Film/TV). Disney have a wide variety of channels under their wing this will make
advertising much easier as they can make deals a lot easier within the Disney ownership as
they can trade advertisement through all channels because dissent has a lot of companies
under its wing it has a lot of statistics so they can predict world movement and this would
be an idea for development and to understand what people want to see so they know what
to make/film.

There are many reasons I would want to work in the media industry, the media industry is
constantly thriving with new ideas, equipment, crew and locations, two is never the same
there is always new stuff going on, on big movie sets there are many opportunities for small
business and freelancers to thrive as they would hire people and businesses to give a
helping hand to make sure execution goes to plan.
People all around the globe work for the media industry, in the UK there are many workers
included in this and this would bring the total up to an astonishing 4.8 million people
working in the media industry in the UK alone. This adds up to a whopping 6% of the UK
workforce (2018)
Personally, I would love to work in the media industry as a Social Media Specialist or
Advertiser, I find these jobs most appealing to me as I’m fascinated how apps and
social media spread the work and how to get it produced to advertisers, this would
require me to plan, implement and monitoring company and social media
businesses. This would be good as if I were to manage a media production business it
would have the opportunity to promote it to its best as well as grow the business to
bigger and better.

Channel 4 is an amazing company that I find myself fascinated with as they have an overall
9.79% viewership of the entire UK in 2019 and they have a lot of statistics to follow with
65% of viewers being male and 35% being female.
The company has come a long way and almost has 10% of the entire UK to its channel this is
an incredible achievement as it does show how powerful they are all over the world.
They have a lot of job opportunities from film4, strategy, marketing, and content
management as well as many more.

In Northern Ireland creative media industry there are roughly 5,600 works this would
include Wolf Hound Media who have produced several products this would include the
Giants Causeway Coastal Route video as giants cause way is a global attraction they took the
opportunity to show it off to the world in astonishing fashion, this has brought in a lot of
money for Northern Ireland as it shows off what life is like around the causeway.
On a bigger scale, HBO has filmed parts of Game of Thrones with the Irish landscapes, this
allowed boost in growth in Ireland’s tourism, therefore, making it a landmark, other
companies seen this and liked it as ‘Star Wars The Last Jedi’ filmed some of these scenes in
Malin Head, Hope Head and Brow Head, this has also lead to boosts in tourism and
landmarks, therefore, increasing the media industry jobs as it has now become a key filming
place around the world.

In the media industry new developments have been happing all around us and a less talked
about one is the switch from Hard Drives to Solid State Drives, a little over 10 years ago
people were saving all their footage onto Hard drives which take longer to transfer files and
read and write them until solid-state drives came about they were almost 200% times faster
but had little capacity until recently where you can get a 2 terabyte hard drive for about
£150 this means faster editing, recording is smoother and transferring files is a lot faster,
this speed up the media industry a lot as it was quick 10 min jobs compared to hour-long
jobs of just transferring data
Netflix has produced several hits such as Sex Education, BoJack Horseman, and House of
Cards over the years they have developed there equipment to even better one of their
major upgrades was there camera upgrade they went from standard cameras to ARRI Alexa
65, Canon C300 MKII and Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6K as well as many more, these are very
expensive cameras to own and to run this shows the development of the company as they
went from little to lard over the years and have their own production company, they were
founded in 1997 and only got popular in 2015 when streaming became available and
popular and this is when they started expanding big.
