- Option 1 : Make a video presenting the top 5 reasons why you should or shouldn’t go work in Silicon
Valley (2-4 minutes).
- Option 2 : Write a description for your video to explain the top 5 reasons why you should or shouldn't
go work in Silicon Valley (150 words).
2
- Digital Challenge : You work for the Silicon Valley magazine as an intern. You have to promote the
opportunities of working in Silicon Valley. As it is an online issue, you must find a digital way to make
it (animation, infographic, video...).
Tâches intermédiaires
- Activités 1 et 2 : Design an advertising campaign. You are in charge of making a new campaign to
promote Silicon Valley. Discuss with your team to decide which companies you choose to include in
your campaign and why.
- Activités 3 et 4 : You have been chosen to participate in the 2019 Wellbeing at Work event. Make a
short oral presentation about your dream workplace to the class keeping in mind the employees’
wellbeing.

Double-page d’Ouverture p. 50-51
video going to be about?”.
Get ready! p. 50
1 Timing : 10 minutes
plusieurs mots de cette toolbox avec en tête: “what is the video going to be about?”.
Productions attendues :
1 USA / San Francisco / famous / new technologies / companies / west coast / Facebook
2 a. b. c. Timing : 15 minutes
50 secondes de voix-off (2 fois). On peut les guider avec des questions comme : “Listen and pick out words
about business.” (business meeting, capital, investors, company), “What companies can you identify in the
video?” (Apple, facebook), “Do you know these companies? What is the aim of the video?”.
7
Productions attendues :
2 a. We get to see a Bridge. In the distance, there is what seems to be a city.
It must / may / might be the San Francisco Bridge (It is called the Golden Gate Bridge). San Francisco is in
California, US.
San Francisco seems to be a huge city, a bustling city. It seems to be on the go / constantly on the move.
2 b. The video presents Silicon Valley and is aimed at young entrepreneurs. It is a commercial to promote
the city and to welcome them.
2 c. I’d choose dynamic as the people in the video seems to be very active. They must be working a lot.
I’d also select modern since people there have video conferences and can easily browse the web. The
working conditions are excellent (+ nice weather on the video).
Young people on the video seem young and dynamic. They are full of energy which is great to have new
ideas!
2 d. Timing : 10 minutes
Productions attendues :
2 d. I guess that one advantage is that Silicon Valley seems to be the perfect place to change the world
with new ideas. Moreover, you must be inspired by all the prominent high-tech companies located there
because they are some of the best companies in the world. What is unique about working there is that you
can challenge all the business rules. Several factors contribute to the success of Silicon Valley. Namely,
innovation and high-value companies like Twitter or Facebook. Silicon Valley is a powerful high-tech hub.
On the contrary, one of the main drawbacks may be the cost of living (especially affordable housing). Also,
we can be expected to have long work hours as these companies aren’t traditional ones. They expect their
employees to spend a lot of their time at work.
3 Timing : 15 minutes
3 Réponses possibles aux brainstorming questions p. 51 :
- Silicon Valley is famous for being a global center of technological innovation on the west coast of
the USA near San Francisco.
- Silicon Valley is unique as it is the home to many of the world's largest technology companies
including Apple, Google, and Facebook.
- Creativity, innovation, and reward may be at the center of each high tech company located in Silicon
Valley. What may be enjoyable working there is that you are surrounded by some of the most
talented people in the tech field. Also, it is known that companies offer benefits to their employees
like free food or wellness centers.
4 Timing : 10 minutes
4 Cette question est associée à l’idiom of the week en p. 51 (make something tick).
Production attendue: I guess the idiom “make something tick” means the things that motivate one or make
one behave in a certain way. I would say that innovation, passion and above all curiosity may have made
Steve Jobs tick.
8
On pourra

According to you, which companies best represent the spirit of Silicon Valley?
Do you know some famous CEOs? Steve
Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, etc.

1 Her name is Ellen K. Pao. She is known for being a tech investor, an advocate. She is the former CEO of
reddit and cofounder of Project Include.
2 Project Include is a non-profit organisation which fights to accelerate diversity and inclusion in the tech
industry. Indeed, she was discriminated against as a woman working in Silicon Valley.
3 Sundar Pichai, Google. Both are American yet Ellen Pao has Taiwanese origins and Sundar Pichai is also
Indian and works against discrimination in the workplace.
Group 2
1 His name is Brian Chesky. He is the well-known chief executive and cofounder of the successful company
named AirBnB.
2 He personifies the spirit of Silicon Valley because he founded Airbnb in 2008. It is a peer-to-peer home
rental company. More than 300 million people in 81,000 cities in 191 countries use it. It helps them get
accomodations.
3 Satya Nadella, Microsoft He has been Microsoft’S CEO since 2014. Like Sundar Pichai, he has Indian
origins. Fun Fact, Sundar Pichai could have become MIcrosoft’s CEO but Satya was given the position instead.

1 His name is Elon Musk, he is well-known for being the CEO of SpaceX which designs, manufactures and
launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. Musk is also a famous technology engineer and inventor. He co-
founded Paypal, the prominent online payment system. Elon Musk can be described as a versatile
entrepreneur as he also created Tesla Motors, the American automotive and energy company.
2 He personifies the spirit of Silicon Valley because he is the perfect example of the serial entrepreneur. No
doubt that innovation makes him tick.
3 Tim Cook, Apple. Unlike Elon Musk, Tim Cook is not an entrepreneur. He took over Apple’s CEO position
after Steve Jobs (who was an entrepreneur) had stepped down.
4 The company that best represents the spirit of Silicon Valley is ______________ . Giving his/her
achievements, I believe __________________ is the most inspiring CEO. He can be considered as a
trailblazer in the tech industry.
Phonology in progress
Timing : 5 minutes
this out ! .

allows the outsider to understand how the company works even though it’s fiction. The perks offered by the
behemoth are countless to create a stress-free working place. ( here that have access to free food, we can
see them playing ping-pong, etc.)

1 The French equivalent of perks may be “avantages (en nature)”. I can think of free food or childcare.
Some companies provide health insurance for their employees. Other companies may offer discounts.
2 The document lists the perks offered by tech companies in Silicon Valley. We may class them into
categories. For instance, the wellness center with chiropractors and dietitians offered by Apple or the
acupuncture and mediation classes provided by Twitter can be categorized into the wellness category.
3 I personally think that the best perk is to be able to have free vacation policies since stress may be part
of these companies’ employees’ everyday lives, it seems important to be able to choose when you can go
on vacation.

Group 2
1 The French equivalent of perks may be “avantages (en nature)”. I can think of free food or a professional
cell phone. Some companies provide health insurance for their employees. Other companies may offer fuel
discount.
2 The document is an article entitled Mega Perks: Silicon Valley Wants Its Workers At Work and it was
published on CNBC in 2013. It lists the perks offered by one of the most prominent tech companies in the
valley, that is to say Google. According to the journalist, it seems that Apple offers perks in order to have its
workers at work as suggests the title. For that, Google provides its employees with many advantages which
can be classified into categories. For instance, wellness has an important part in the list of perks. We can
cite for instance, multiple gyms and a variety of healthy cafes. Family is also essential as they provide
childcare on campus, family restaurants, and you can even bring your dog. To finish, Google cares about
their employees as they have created a comfy working environment with a climbing wall, nap pods or a
bowling alley.

3 I strongly believe that having a healthy lifestyle may contribute to increase self-esteem and self-
confidence, and decrease stress and anxiety, that is why I’d rather have a wellness center in my workplace.

(reprend les arguments donnés à l’exercice 3)
5 Having a very positive environment helps people thrive. The more perks they get, the more productive
they are as they work in stress-free conditions, thus allowing to find new ideas to blossom. Also, the
environment helps co-workers to collaborate more in a friendly environment. Discussing the progress made
in such and such project over coffee is great!
4 Not so perfect...
On peut donc leur demander avant le visionnage : “What would be the
disadvantages of working at Google?”
17
What I find really appealing is…
To my view, it’s…
This video aims at…
2-A A good YouTube video should be brief and clear. It is important to create vivid visuals to attract more
viewers. I think that speaking with a friendly and dynamic voice can make your content appealing. I believe
that this video has all the characteristics of a good YouTube video as it gathers the features just mentioned.
4-A In my opinion, one of the most bothersome disadvantages of working at Google would be the issue of
gender and race equality as it is said that Google’s workforce is mostly white and male. But I still wonder if
this is true. I need to make some researches about that aspect.
2-B The video is what is called an explainer video. This short animated video aims at explaining an idea
in a simple and engaging way. Here, the speaker explains the cons of working at Google. She tries to give
another perspective on what is commonly seen as a dream working environment.
3-B What I find really appealing is the clear and concise language. It also has appealing and attractive
visuals that quickly grab the viewer's attention. It's both informational and educational. The music helps to
increase engagement.
Enfin, ils devront
imaginer ce qui pourrait améliorer le bien-être des employés (préparation à la tâche intermédiaire : Over to
you!).
18
5 Not such a stress-free environment. We can imagine that the people pressure their peers into working
harder and more and since perks are numerous, they expect workers to remain on-site for as long as
possible. They also spend a lot of time in front of screens which can provoke health problems.
Google is a very big company so the workers have to stand out if they want to be promoted.
6 It is important that workers feel they are wanted and that their work is valued. Thus, managers should
do bonding activities and encourage communications. Also, they should reward their workers so that they
keep being positive.
Script de la vidéo
Titre : 5 Reasons Working At Google Sucks
Lien de la vidéo : LLS.fr/A2P55
Timing : 1min15
Dream of working at Google? Well here are five reasons working there kind of sucks:
- You're there forever. Need a haircut, gourmet food, a massage, a bus? Google provides its employees
with everything they'll ever need for free so you'll never have a reason to leave work ever.
- Your company is sketch with user privacy. In 2013, the Snowden leaks revealed that Google worked
directly with the NSA's prism surveillance program. Take that customer satisfaction!
- Your genius gets paid but not always used. Being at the top of your MIT class might mean getting paid
128 thousand dollars for working on projects like Google Plus.
- Your skin color and ovaries might get in the way. Being a woman or ethnic minority in tech means you
probably won't love your white male work environments.
- You'll never be the best. Google hires the best of the best. The chances of you being the best of the best
of the best aren't worth thinking about. But hey! You're still working where everyone else wishes they
worked.

her workload. It seems that she can’t cope with the mountain of homework in front of her.
1 Text A There is a clear link between the picture and text A as in text A teens feel the pressure to succeed
to become like their parents. This pressure can become a source of anxiety.
1 Text B This is an extract from the website Medium.com entitled “High Pressure.” It is the testimony of a
teenager named Chloe who explains how she sometimes struggles to cope with all her responsibilities. The
link is quite obvious here as the young woman in the picture could be Chloe.
1 Text C Given the picture and the title, it must be about how teenagers living in Silicon Valley may feel
under pressure. Shawna who gives her testimony in text C is the perfect example of the overwhelmed teen
who fights to reach her parents’ expectations.
2 Text A Teenagers must be under stress because they have to attend an elite university as their parents
did before them. They are expected to work like adults without being prepared to face such pressure, some
students even crack being unable to cope with this situation.
2 Text B Chloe certainly has a lot on her plate. She is the president of the student association, has taken
part in the making of the Yearbook and is also the leader of a mental health initiative. And all of these add
up to what she has to do as a student (ie work, study, be present at school.)
2 Text B The need to be an excellent student to be able to get to prestigious colleges makes the student
feel anxious. Silicon Valley is also said to be the place of workaholism thus if students want to work in SV,
they will have to prove that they can handle a heavy workload.
3 Text A One needs to be understanding regarding the “status” of the teenagers. Indeed, a teenager is
not only the kind of person who will only be interested in social media. For instance, especially for those
living in Silicon Valley, being a teenager proves to be complex. They face a lot of pressure from the parents
to get into prestigious schools.
3 Text B Being a student can be challenging. In the context of going to college right after graduation, it is
important to keep in mind that doing too much can have very negative consequences (nervous breakdown,
anxiety, fear of failure, …)?
3 Text B Perfection is not the key! Not going to a prestigious University does not necessarily mean that a
teenager has failed or has not reached his / her potential!

Let's talk this out !
Useful vocabulary: They must be under stress…
Teenagers feel their parents’ goal unattainable, they...
I would advise them to…
One of the solutions I would give is…
Maybe they should…
If I were them, I would…
I advise them to…
Productions possibles :
4 I believe that all parents want success for their children that’s why they tend to push them rather than
encourage them to succeed. Sometimes parents think that their child should follow their exact path and
avoid the life choices they are unhappy with. Also, parents often see their child as a miniature version of
themselves and they think they know what’s best for them.
Teenagers feel their parent’s goal unattainable. They must be under stress and might experience constant
anxiety. This pressure can place teenagers at a greater risk of developing depression or other mental health
issues. They can also have low self-esteem which may increase the risk of suicide.
5 I would advise them to follow their own dreams and progress their own skills and interests without being
influenced by their parents’ opinion.
One of the solutions I would give is to focus on what makes you happy and healthy.
If I were them, I would try to chill out with friends and try not to spend too much time studying. Also to avoid
developing depression, they should stay active and be open with their family.
Grammar in progress
Production possible :
2. It’s easy to forget how challenging being a teenager can be.
Students didn’t grow up with an understanding for the mental health value.
Students grow up in a culture that generally frowns upon doing things that aren’t productive.
23
Phonology in progress
Corrigé des questions :
/ˈæn/ = 1
/ə/ = 2 - 3
Production possible : If you feel stressed because of getting into a good college, you should try to relax
and think that work always pays, but too much work may be dangerous for your mental health.
One of the reasons for teen stress may be deciding what to do after high school. In that case, taking a gap
year may be a good option for you.
Finally, teen stress may be triggered by parental pressure, if so you should tell them how you feel and take
some time to chill out with your friends.

I strongly believe that parents tend to put too much pressure on their children. I often hear my friends say
that they fear their parents’ reaction when they get bad grades. As far as I’m concerned, I sometimes feel
misunderstood, especially when I tell my parents that I don’t want to attend a renowned university like an
Ivy League one. I understand that all parents want success for their children that’s why they tend to push
them but I do think that they should listen to their child’s needs and encourage them to succeed. I am also
under pressure each time I have an exam, I may even feel sick before going to school. My friends always
tell me that I should calm down and go and chill out with my friends. I reckon they are right, but I can’t help
being stressed out probably because I know that people (teachers, family) expect me to succeed, but what
if I failed? Would they be disappointed? Would they want me to work more? I already feel overwhelmed, I
really don’t want to go through depression. I know that I am far from being the only one to undergo such
stress. I have read that teens who live in Silicon Valley feel overwhelmed because of parental pressure.
From my point of view, I believe that we should follow our own dreams no matter what. I honestly think that
being healthy and happy is far more important than attending a great university like Stanford.

Les rubriques proposées “Grammar in progress”, “Vocabulary in progress”, “Phonology in progress”
- La première se trouve dans la seconde image ‘because you didn’t let me take a class’,
- La seconde est dans la dernière image ‘Are you using this as leverage to get approval for
the class?’, il s’agit d’une subordonnée de but introduite par ‘to’.
b) because + proposition complète

with endless perks on top of their impressive salaries. Let's look at the seven most ridiculous perks at Facebook! Number
seven: they've got gourmet food courts and private chefs across campus serving everything from smoked pork shoulder
to kale and quinoa—and all of it is free!
Man: My jam when I first started was the BBQ pit so ridiculous, the brisket—not the healthiest thing but pretty delicious—
oh and the noodle bar.
Voice-over: And there's always this giant room full of free local organic things to eat. Number six: Imagine if you could

climbing wall, I didn't even see you there! This is Mark Zuckerberg climbing the rock. Don't be silly! Mark's climbing walls
are in his backyard.
Man: We do a few different things here. We have open climbing time that's free for employees or interns. We also do
some classes where we teach people and instruct people on rock climbing techniques.
Voice-over: Number five: notice the abundance of eye candy everywhere you look. If you need to let out some stress
before a conference call and paint some happy little trees just go to the analog research lab.
Man: We have silkscreen facilities. These are resources for employees and resident artists alike to come in and express
themselves.
Voice-over: Number four: man it's hard walking across the office fortunately Facebook has bikes lots of them if you get
a flat stop by the bike shop and get it fixed. The cost? Just parts!
Man: it's really convenient to hop on a bicycle provided by Facebook and to kind of roll up and down campus it's way
faster than walking.
Man: By far my favorite benefit like the music around common space—it's like a dream come true. You actually come
here you know within two minutes and play something kind of think about stuff solve the problems of my head and then
go back and implement them.
Voice-over: Number two: no need to wait in line for an overpriced crappy haircut! Just get an artisanal trim at the on-
campus barber shop. Number one: no one can mess with you for using Facebook at work.
Man: Actually, turns out that Facebook's a pretty powerful productivity tool as well.
Woman: For somebody like Ted Diggs massaging my shoulders. I took a drone I feel like a lot more getting drones
these days I wish every employee could have their own drone.

TONYA MOSLEY, BYLINE: The inside of Facebook in Menlo Park, Calif., is the stuff of lore. This 430,000-
square-foot campus offers perks like an onsite cleaners, a dentist and free food, basically a smorgasbord of
anything your heart desires - custom omelets, braised beef, handmade sushi. You really never have to leave
the office.
It's what lured Ben Werner here. He traveled all the way from France to get a tour of Facebook from a friend
who works there. He wanted to see for himself all of the perks he has read so much about.
BEN WERNER: I'd like to have those things taken care of - probably also would mean that I'd spend more time
at work. But I guess it's a two-way street then that benefits us both.
32
MOSLEY: But about 8 miles away in Mountain View, Calif., the home of Google - free food, at least at the new
Facebook campus, won't be on the menu.
LENNY SIEGEL: We believe these companies are part of our community. A growing number of their
employees live in our community. And we want them to be a part of our community.
MOSLEY: Mountain View Mayor Lenny Siegel says, for years, restaurant owners have complained that
employees of Google never come out to eat or shop. So when the city learned that Facebook would be opening
a new office here in September, the council passed a measure that bars the company from serving free food
in its corporate cafeteria.
Facebook said, no problem. Under the agreement, the social media company can subsidize meals from
restaurants open to the public.
But Mayor Siegel acknowledges there are still a few kinks that need to be smoothed out.
SIEGEL: Facebook is a global company, and some of their people work in the middle of the night. And if all
the restaurants are closed, I would be open to considering food service in the middle of the night.
MOSLEY: Erika Rasmussen manages an open-air grocery store called the Milk Pail Market next to the new
Facebook office. To her, the thought of feeding 2,000 employees who are hungry around the clock is a bit
nerve-wracking.
ERIKA RASMUSSEN: We don't want Facebook to overwhelm this area, but we do want Facebook to support
this area because we will need their patronage to survive.
MOSLEY: Facebook says it's still working out the details, but some other ideas also include turning the ground
floor of this new building into a food court with local restaurants open to the public.

1. What kind of document is it? Justify your answer.
2. Rephrase the title in your own words.
3. List some of the perks quoted in the first paragraph and explain why big tech companies offer
them to their employees.
4. What is the difference between the start-ups’ approach and that of the big firms? Give an
example.
5. What is the aim for offering great perks?
6. What healthy perks does Weebly offer to its employees? Why do they offer such perks?
7. What is the most surprising perk offered by many start-ups? Explain in your own words.
1. The link CNBC.com, the date and the journalist’s name indicate that this document is an online
article published in August 2013.
2. The title “SV start-ups take perks to new level” means that some start-ups located in Silicon Valley,
California have decided to offer better perks than other companies, they are surpassing them.
3. Start-ups offer several perks which can be either healthy perks like massages, “body analytics”,
financial advantages like “subsidized rents” or leisure benefits, as for instance offering trips to Tahoe
and even helicopter rides.
4. It seems that tech behemoths give general perks, like huge salaries but start-ups have chosen a
more personal approach, which means that they try to personalize their perks for each employee.
For instance, Dropcam offers each employee (plus guest) a free helicopter ride—piloted by the
company CEO Greg Duffy—to the destination of their choice.
5. The aim is to simplify their employees’ life and of course try to keep them at work longer.
6. Weebly has tried to offer more than a simple free gym access. They offer each employee two free
annual WellnessFX draws, which provides a personalized assessment of a user's blood chemistry
and then breaks down the health data in easy-to-understand charts. I think that they want to avoid
long sick leave by trying to keep their workforce healthy.
7. In my opinion, the most surprising perk is that they give flexible work schedules and unlimited
vacation days. I can’t imagine that it could happen in France but I do think it’s a good thing. The
employees know their work has to be done, so they just have to plan it on their way and enjoy their
family life in the evening if they’d like to. I would really like to have unlimited vacation days, I guess
it’s okay to work from an island in the Caribbean when you work for a high-tech company as your
office is basically your computer.

a) Elizabeth Holmes is a woman. She was also very young when she started her company.
b) It is indeed a big company, in terms of potential since Novartis, a pharmaceutical drug giant, was willing
to fund projects. However, in terms of size, it is a small company made of 15 workers.
c) It is when Elizabeth Holmes was a student at Stanford University that she came up with the idea of
Theranos.
d) We learn that Intel was one of the first SV company.
We also learn about how SV has been seen as a place where everything seems possible. The story of
Henry Mosley illustrates this idea. He was able to climb the ladder. He started as a chip maker to become
a very powerful CFO.
e) Elizabeth Holmes worked with people who were brilliant in their fields of expertise.
f) It means that Robertson values very much the character of Elizabeth Holmes. He truly / utterly thinks
she is a great person.
g) It looked reliable since most of the executives of the start-up had excellent and prestigious background!
h) The pharmaceutical world is a thriving business which makes hundreds of billions of dollars. If Theranos
could work for these pharmaceutical companies, all the better.
You are a junior editor at the teen magazine Growing up in Silicon Valley and you've been asked to
write an editorial (opinion piece) on the Theranos Scandal.
Hello Folks!
Here is ______________, your junior Editor at Growing up! I have had the chance to read the book Bad
Blood, written by John Carreyrou and figured out it would be great to share my views with you on the matter!
Indeed, the book was issued in 2018 and tells the story of Theranos. A start-up that was created by Elizabeth
Holmes. As a former Stanford student, she founded Theranos in 2003. Back then, she had claimed to be
able to get blood tests and results only with a very small amount of blood! It obviously sparked the curiosity
of private investors who were willing to invest a lot of money on such technology, However, in 2015, John
Carreyrou started writing articles on the subject and mentioned that the technology Elizabeth had invented
was nothing but a scam!
If you feel strongly on the subject of health, I highly recommend that you read that book. It tells you more
on the secrets and lies SV is trying to hide. Nothing related to health should be hidden.

Exemple de production : I personally think that the most important category is wellness. The best perk is
to be able to have flex vacation policies since stress may be part of these companies’ employees’ everyday
lives, it seems important to be able to choose when you can go on vacation. Furthermore, I strongly believe
that having a healthy lifestyle may contribute to increase self-esteem and self-confidence, and decrease
stress and anxiety, that is why I’d rather have a wellness center in my workplace.

a. Which drawback among the ones listed is the most problematic for you? Explain.
Among the drawbacks of working for a big company, the worst is the lack of personal time because you
have long working hours.
To attract top talents, CEOs could offer more bonding activities and encourage communication.
Another simple way to improve workplace wellness would be to reward their workers so that they keep being
positive.
In my opinion, one of the most bothersome disadvantages of working at Google would be the issue of gender
and race equality as it is said that Google’s workforce is mostly white and male.
