CYBER wares – the Technology of the Future

Abstract

We are in an era where innovation is the key to success. Mankind is being replaced by computers. But one
thing that a computer lacks is the sixth sense. We have advanced in technology from genetics to CYBER
genetics. This is where CYBER wares come into picture. CYBER wares are today instrumental in all fields
from medicine to human enhancement. This is a field which has potential to change the course of the
world.

Introduction

What if in the near future, men were stamped on the forehead with a stamp labeled ‘Intel Inside’? What if
our sense of smell is more enhanced than that of a dog? What is we could hack people’s brains and have
access too all their thoughts? What if man never tires? What if we worked harder than a machine but still
remained human?

Why Interest to do a paper on CYBERWARES?

One man, he’s more than everything in this entire world. He is faster, accurate, efficient, tireless and the
nearest thing we know capable of challenging the power of God. But what if we can enhance man? What
if we can make him a super human? What if we can erase the word called fatigue? What is we could
control our senses beyond what is believed possible? The answer to these questions and many others
regarding the incompetence of man is CYBERWARES.

The inspiration to our team comes from two movies. First is ‘The Universal Soldier’ and next is
‘Spiderman-2’. I mean the characters of Luke played by Jean Claude Van Damme and the famous
Dr.Ock played by Alfred Monila. Do not mistake me for being inspired by villains. History has thought us
one thing. We must learn from our mistakes. And we are such people. We are here to create a new world
where people are tireless and strong and also capable of helping people and most importantly, know logic.

Is it to make only Super Humans?

CYBER wares are the reason why today, we do not fear the loss of any organs. Modern prostheses attempt
to deliver a natural functionality and appearance. In the sub-field where prosthetics and cybernetics ware
cross over, experiments have been done where microprocessors, capable of controlling the movements of
an artificial limb, are attached to the severed nerve-endings of the patient. The patient is then taught how to
operate the prosthetic, trying to learn how to move it as though it were a natural limb. Scans are made more
accurate today. They also help us to view 2d objects in a 3d form.

Theory

CYBER ware is a relatively new and unknown field (“proto-type technology”). More formally: CYBER
ware is technology that attempts to create a working interface between machines/computers and the human
nervous system, including (but not limited to) the brain.

Just like various other technologies, CYBER wares too have a rich history. Despite it being a very new
technology it has a strong history which stretches as far as the field of medicines and machinery goes.

Ø Early in 1994 Professor Ashley Craig and Mr.Paul Mlsaac noticed the brain signals when a
person closed his eyes for more than one second and decided that this brain signal could in turn be
used to control something else.
Ø The first variety attempts to connect directly with the brain. The data-jack is probably the best-
known, having heavily featured in works of fiction but it is still the most difficult object to
implement.
Ø If the data-jack could be implemented, then the mind could be controlled easily through a
computer.
Ø Large university laboratories conduct most of the experiments done in the area of direct neural
interfaces. For ethical reasons, the tests are usually performed on animals or slices of brain tissue
from donor brains.
Ø A number of companies are working on what is essentially a "hands-free" mouse or keyboard.
This technology uses these brain signals to control computer functions. These interfaces are
sometimes called Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMI).
Ø These methods are highly expensive but they are in a stage of infancy. But it is not far from when
we can design superhumans.
Ø In the sub-field where prosthetics and CYBERWARES cross over, experiments have been done
where microprocessors, capable of controlling the movements of an artificial limb, are attached to
the severed nerve-endings of the patient. The patient is then taught how to operate the prosthetic.
Ø CYBER wares have also been used in scanning and conversion of images from 2d to 3d.
Ø Dr.Les Kirkup of UTS developed a system of signals as small those present on the scalp which
could help someone to activate an external device such as a lamp.
Ø The latest technological advancement in the field of CYBER wares is the Mind Switch which
allows people to activated and controls electrical devices and is extremely successful but is yet to
be commercialized. The day is not far from the day when we imitate Harry Potter and mutter
‘lumos’ to ignite lamps.

Just like nanotechnology and the production of geothermal power, this is in a developmental stage and is a
field that is not a comfort zone as it requires a large amount of money and tremendous mount of hard work.
But the potential that rests within this field is enormous.

Problem solving and methods

What is the need for CYBER wares?

Today, in this advanced world of ours, we need automation to exist. But automation using machines is
mechanical and purely algorithm oriented. It cannot process anything

Methods and Materials

For instance, here is the schematic diagram of a working model of the famous mind switch. The concept is
based on learning more and more about the brainwave activity that people transmit under different
conditions.

If things were so easy, why are we still looking at switches and remotes in our everyday life? Why is this
all still a project on paper?

Every brain in this planet is different. So is every person. So in order to commercialize these devices, we
need a brain signal map of every person and we need the hardware to adapt to every person. One small
error could jinx up the entire nervous system and so there is a considerable amount of risk involved.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is the measurement of the electrical activity of the mind. It is observed
that every impulse of the brain is an electric signal. The time resolution of the EEG is very high and this is
used in clinical and research purposes. The mammography technique to find if a person is lying is based on
this technique. But these signals are weak, in the order of 1-16 Hz. But they can be amplified and
transmitted through the nerves. This is used in the case of a CYBER hand. This is used for people who
have lost a limb or a part of it.
This is an important advancement in the field of prosthetics as we replace the deceased limb by something
which is just as sophisticated, just as firm and is controlled by our brain. From a CYBER hand, today we
have advanced to stage of CYBER legs and also CYBER glands. We are in the developmental stages of
Cybernetics but it is not far from the day when we can see CYBER humans who are here to accelerate this
world.
It is just a metal hand in place of skin but it obeys us and there is no danger involved. The accidents
portrayed in movies are never bound to happen in reality and CYBER wares are mankind’s ticket to a
brighter future. The field is versatile, self-stimulating and no doubt, a very interesting field to put our
minds into. Yet, it remains a child amongst other fields. One with potential beyond any field man has ever
seen before in his life.

Today we observe more details of the mysterious works of great artists like Da Vinci in a more accurate
manner.
The above figure shows a reconstructed 3d face of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. For modifying the illumination,
relative changes in colour are computed on the 3d face. Additional warping generates new orientations,
while details of the painting, such as brush strokes or cracks, are retained. This has revealed many
mysteries and different orientations about the painting. This is the application of image synthesis.

The applications are a never ending list which can find many better things added onto it as time progresses.

Conclusion

Not just the making of superhumans but CYBER WARES are inevitable as we move on into the future.
They are truly beneficial and are tools toenhance our life and just perfect the art of excellence in us
humans. CYBER WARES is exactly what is meant to assist us in our life to create a new world. It will give
us power and help us do the work of God. Playing God has its own risks but our human race has the
necessary temperment to do it and drive this world into the path of well being. Technology is for the
strivers and this paper is dedicated to every striving person in this world.

Discussion

Why do we have to enhance the normal human being? Why shouldn’t we?

Why do we have to try to do the work of God? Why must we not?

Why do we have to know all the secrets and mysteries? Why not know them?

All these questions can be answered only by man’s decisions.

Man’s grasp exceeds his reach but is it not the reason why man was given the sixth sense?

I for one aspire to find the true reason for the sixth sense and I believe that CYBER WARES hold the key
for my answers.

Success comes to those who strive and seek and the only thing that never changes is change itself. So
let us take an oath to pursue in this wonderful field of technology.

A Special Thanks

I pledge my sincere thanks to TAGORE engineering college for creating such an oppurtunity and giving us
excellent fields to work on.
