Team Statement

What problems do you try to solve?

As the number of COVID-19 cases increases, the stock for the necessary
supplies needed to combat the virus falls short as hygiene products are being hoarded
and sold for a higher price. Moreover, health care front liners here in the Philippines are
not fully equipped to go toe to toe with the deadly virus. In fact, some hospitals even
lack in Personal Protective Equipment, which is one of the most important things they
need to have in order to not contract the virus and take better care of their patients. This
shortage has made individuals and health care workers take matters into their own
hands, as some people decided to make their own D.I.Y. versions of these PPE’s, and
even use garbage bags as an alternative for the suit, however, it is not fully effective
and remotely safe for them; and even if they have PPE’s at hand, some might not get
the full set. For example, some might have medical masks and face shields, but lack a
proper overall which only puts them at a higher risk. So what does this group propose?
We offer a complete set of PPE’s for the healthcare workers that are exposed to the
deadly agents brought upon by COVID-19.
Why you and why now?
A long foreseen shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE)—including
masks, N95 respirators, and gowns—is crippling health workers’ ability to respond to
the coronavirus pandemic in every part of the world right now. The shortage of hospital
masks, gowns, and eye shields poses a health risk to both providers and the patients
they’re treating. Reusing masks or wearing the same eye shield when treating multiple
patients further contributes to the spread of Covid-19 at a time when the country
desperately needs to be slowing down the rate of new infections, or “flattening the
curve.” To safely and adequately protect providers and patients as the pandemic
inevitably spreads further, large-scale PPE manufacturing efforts are needed to
resupply hospitals with the safest gear.We want to engage in a historic effort to ramp up
production of the vital equipment needed to respond to the coronavirus outbreak. While
respirators like N95 masks have received the greatest attention from the public and
media, PPE needs also include protective garments, eye and face protection, gloves,
and other components of the specialized ensembles health care professionals use to
protect themselves.
Furthermore, with the current pandemic that our frontliners are fighting, our group
has seen the need to equip them with the right materials. PPEs are very scarce as we
have identified as the current problem that is affecting millions, billions of people all over
the world. Our group aims to give aid in fighting this very long and hard battle. Our
group is composed of diligent and bright students, especially when it comes to research.
We believe that research plays a big part in helping fight this pandemic.

PPE Suit estimated price

Found below is the estimated price of each component of the suit, its presumed
supplier, the delivery expense, and the total estimated price for each PPE suit. Note that
this price may change since most of the suppliers we found work online, and they may
run out of stocks themselves due to the high demand for the products, which in turn,
will make us look for other suppliers that may have different prices.
