The COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), which

received its Charter from the Federal Government in August 2000, as a


Degree Awarding Institute (DAI) in the public sector. Pursuant to the
Federal Government of Pakistan’s decision, it is selected to be upgraded to
the status of a university, more precisely Comsats University (CU). Being
federally established institute, the CIIT currently has seven campuses in
Islamabad, Lahore, Wah, Abbottabad, Attock, and Sahiwal, Vehari , while 5
more campuses are in pipeline including Gujrat, Toba Tek Singh, Karachi,
Quetta and Larkana. The future plans also envisage opening of more
campuses in the provinces of Sindh and Balochistan, as well as overseas.

Currently the CIIT is offering 41 different degree programs in the fields of


Information and Communication Technology, Management Sciences,
Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Bio-
sciences, Development Studies, Environmental Science, Meteorology, and
Architecture and Design. The present student strength is around 13,239 with
faculty strength of 1,313. The Institute in the short time has already
produced high quality graduates numbering more than 6,916, who are
serving the nation in the various callings. Recently, the Higher Education
Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has ranked the CIIT at number 5 in terms of
research productivity and at number 7 among the Engineering institutions of
higher education in the country during 2007. Work Work & Work .

COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) is an institution


for higher education in Pakistan. It comes under the umbrella of
Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the
South (Asia) or COMSATS, an international organization with a wide range
of interests and facilities.

Currently CIIT imparts education to over 10000 students nationwide. CIIT


attained the status of degree awarding institute vide the Presidential
Ordinance No. XXXVIII issued on 12th August, 2000.

CIIT is ranked at 7th[1] number in the Engineering discipline according to the
HEC ranking issued in 2008 and it is ranked 1st in BCS according to
HEC.In terms of Research output, CIIT has been ranked at number 4 among
institutions of higher education numbering more than 114 in the country
during 2005-07. While in terms of research citations, the research produced
at CIIT has been ranked at number two in Pakistan, as verified by web of
Sciences.[2]

The Federal Cabinet of Pakistan charter for COMSATS University[3] on


Thursday, October 5, 2006 , transformed/upgraded COMSATS Institute of
Information Technology into a university. The charter for COMSATS
university is in line with the Model University Ordinance 2002 and would
enable the university to open new departments and faculties. now it is ranked
6th overall and 5th in research.

CIIT has currently seven campuses around Pakistan equipped with modern
facilities for the students and the faculty:

In coming years, CIIT is expected to receive a significant number of scholars


(Doctorates) who are currently studying in developed countries on university
scholarships. CIIT also offers MS program leading to Doctorate.

Presently 24 undergraduate degree programs and 18 Graduate programs are


on offer.

More than 210 faculty members and academic managers holding PhD
qualification are currently serving the CIIT.The remaining have MS/M.Phil
in relevant fields.

CIIT has proudly produced more than 6,000 graduates since its inception in
2000.So far twenty eight convocations have been organized in its campuses.

ABOUT LAHORE CAMPUS


Overview:-

COMSATS Institute of Information Technology Lahore campus is located on


Defense Road off Raiwind Road Lahore and is about 25 minutes drive from the
main city. This campus was established in January 2002. The sprawling campus is
purpose built and is spread over area of 185 acres with constructed area of
400,000 sq. ft.

The campus is equipped with the state-of-the-art computers and electronics labs.
During a short span of time, the continuous eforts of the dedicated faculty have
made this campus known for its academics excellence, which forms strong
foundations for a bright career for its alumni. Here the young minds can really
create their future.

The environment at the campus is vibrant, creative and challenging, both for the
teachers and students. The campus tends to escel in its research capability, which
will open new horizons of knowledge in Information Technology. In a city of
learning as Lahore, the campus caters for the ever-increasing demands of students
in the fields of Computer Science , Telecommunication Engineering, Computer
Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Management Science.

The campus consists of one administrative block, five workshops, five academic
blocks, a mosque, boys and girls hostel and a number of residential units for the
employees.

The location of the campus is strategically chosen to provide the students with an
ideal environment, which is not only conductive for their educational persuits but
would also ensure that the students are well abreast of the latest developments in
the IT sector.

The campus offers 30% seats to children of industrial workers ree of cost, besides
other scholarships

CIIT Mission:-
COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, founded in the belief that understanding
enriches all people, is dedicated to the search for truth through advancement of learning
and extending the frontiers of knowledge; to the sharing of this knowledge through
education in an academically diverse range of disciplines; and to the application of this
knowledge to benefit the people of Pakistan in particular, and Muslim Ummah and the
world, as a whole. The Institute's mission is threefold:

• Research and Discovery: Generate and preserve knowledge, understanding, and


creativity by instigating enquiry, conducting high-quality research and promoting
scholarship, that benefit students, scholars, and communities across the country,
the Muslim Ummah, and the world, at large.
• Teaching and Learning: Share that knowledge, understanding, and creativity by
providing a broad range of educational programs among a diverse community of
learners and teachers, and prepare graduate, professional, and undergraduate
students, as well as non-degree-seeking students interested in continuing
education and lifelong learning, for active roles in competitive and culturally
diverse environs.
• Outreach and Public Service: Extend, apply, and exchange knowledge between
the Institute and society by applying scholarly expertise to intellectual, social and
technological problems, by helping organizations and individuals respond to their
changing environments, and by making the knowledge and resources created and
preserved at the Institute accessible to the citizens. Using the resources of its
multiple campuses in an integrated fashion, the Institute vies to strengthen the
services to the state through the education of a modern work force, research and
development, technology commercialization, and partnership with business,
government and community groups.

CIIT Board of Governors:-


The affairs of CIIT are governed by the Board of Governors (BOG) consisting of eminent
Scientists, Educationists and Policymakers. The Board, headed by Executive Director,
COMSATS, has representation from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry
of Information Technology, Ministry of Education, Higher Education Commission,
NESCOM, PAEC etc., and the academia. The day to day affairs of CIIT are taken care of
by the Rector, Dr. S.M. Junaid Zaidi, who is the academic and administrative head of the
Institute. The Rector performs his functions in accordance with the general policy
guidelines of the CIIT, laid down by the BOG.
