Revival Message 4: The Significance of Prayer

The most important activity in the Christian faith is prayer and the most significant people in the
Church and the world at large are not preachers, clergy, politicians and all icons of our societies,
it's rather the undervalued, unnoticed prayer warriors. These are the ones that sustain and
preserve our sin infested world with all its destructive consequences.

John Wesley, that great Methodist father said: "God does nothing but in answer to prayer." Oh
how I believe this with all my heart! Basing on my little experience in Christianity, starting from
the time, as a teenager, when I first said the prayer that changed my life; asking God to reveal
Himself to me if He is real and to show me the way to him, then I will follow it all my days. God
graciously answered my childish prayer! The risen LORD JESUS CHRIST appeared to me in the
night, oh that night I was gloriously converted from death unto life hallelujah! I always wonder,
if I had never prayed that prayer I would probably still be a sinner or already dead and burning in
hell!

From that moment on, I have engaged myself fully to prayer. I joined prayer meetings in homes,
prayer overnights, gone on prayer mountains, personal prayer walks around my city and now I
do prayer journeys to different cities. A few weeks ago I was on the bus praying through Nairobi
and Mombasa in Kenya, praying for our neighbour's politics. I pray for the Church of Christ of
all denominations, for sinners and for my nation.

Through the years in this prayer discipline, I have experienced a lot in my personal life, the lives
of many individuals, the Church, the nation and many other nations. Through prayer coupled
with my reading of the written Word of God and my study of the lives of many great saints in
church history, I have come to this conclusion that: "God cannot do anything in your life, your
church, ministry, family, nation and other areas until you ask Him to!" Without prayer God
cannot do anything on earth, He is utterly helpless! I always tell people that because of the gift of
free will given to human beings by God, the most powerful entity in your life is not God or the
devil or anybody else but yourself. You determine what happens in your life. You can choose to
yield your will to God and this is what prayer is all about; coming to the end of yourself and
abandoning your all into the mighty hands of God. Casting all your cares unto Him for He cares
for you. Leonard Revanhill another great revival preacher of yesteryear used to say, "No man is
greater than his prayer life" I certainly believe this. More prayer equals more of God in your life,
family, church, business, ministry, nation and so on.

Psalms 115:16 says, the heavens are The LORD's but the earth He has given to the children of
men. From this It seems to me The LORD has no business on earth - your life, marriage, career,
children, Church, nation; it's all in our hands. That's why my Redeemer taught His disciples to
pray in the so called "Lord's prayer": "let your will be done on earth as it is done in heaven." So
then prayer is bringing the fullness of God on this planet; it is calling down the will of God to be

done on earth. Without prayer, God will never have any access in your life! Oh how few of us
take this prayer business seriously! Prayer is the greatest Christian duty, anything else done
without prayer is an abomination before God.

Our LORD JESUS didn't do anything for the first 30 years of His life on earth. I ask, what do
you think He was doing all along? I suggest He was preparing Himself in prayer for His life
assignment of only 3 1/2 years! From His first appearance in public at John's baptism He was
praying (Luke 3:21). Hebrews 5:7 describes His earthly life "who in the days of His flesh when
He had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto Him that was able
to save Him from death He was heard in that He feared" His was a prayerful life! He often spent
all night in prayer alone on mountains. During the course of His ministry, He often separated
Himself to pray. Before His arrest, He wrestled in prayer to the point of sweating blood. Even
while on the cross, He was still praying to His Father until His death. Oh hallelujah He rose
again. To date He is at the right hand of God still interceding for His Bride. I wonder if this is
your life too?! If the Son of God was given to prayer and needed it to succeed in His mission,
what makes you think you can do without it? It's only through prayer that we show our
brokenness before and dependency on God. He is a proud man who doesn't pray! To fear God is
to pray always to Him!

In Scriptures and church history all men and women that stand out as eternal shining stars in the
kingdom of God have been all great addicts to this prayer exercise. I cry for my generation, we
are too academic, our Christianity is an intellectual one. We know all the Greek and Hebrew, we
have millions of books on anything and we are good at organising, programmes, activities but
are we given to the heart of our faith which is PRAYER? No wonder we are weak, dominated by
sin and seemingly overpowered by the world with its vain lifestyle. We have neglected prayer.

Every Christian should pray a minimum of 2 hours a day! Every Church should have weekly
prayer meetings - it's not a church that has no prayer meetings, it’s a mere social club! Oh Lord
have mercy on us! Every Christian home should have a prayer meeting twice a day morning and
evening before or after dinner. The gravest sin of all is a lack of prayer! My name sake, Prophet
Samuel of old said "Far be it from me that I should sin against God in ceasing to pray for you (1
Samuel 12:23). How many can say that in our day? Where are the intercessors? Where are those
that will not give the Lord rest until He has made Zion a praise in our day? Where are the heroes
of our faith whose strength is on their knees and laying face down before the throne of grace,
laying hold of Him until He visits us afresh? Where are the mourners before the altar of God? "I
looked and wondered that there was no an intercessor."

Some years ago while crying unto God for revival, the Lord graciously spoke to me about 3
hindrances to revival in my day:

1. Dead nominal Christianity,

2. Traditions of men - our atheistic humanistic culture.
3. Lack of prayer of my people. This He said was the worst!

I don't know about you but I have given myself to this great call of prayer. This is how I want my
poor life to be summarised when I rest to my eternal reward: "A worshipper of God who lived
the Word of God and prayed without ceasing." Brethren, pray without ceasing and pray on a
fixed rigid set time especially in the early hours of the day. At your business of the day do all
your duties in a mood of prayer in your hearts.

Prayer is not for preachers or some super Christians with a special call of an intercessor, no sir,
it's you ordinary Christian that been given this awesome responsibility of prayer. What are you to
pray for? For your poor wretched soul, mourn for your sins and weaknesses, ask for divine grace
to be imparted unto you from above, seek the will of God for your life and how to fulfill it, ask to
be perfected in the likeness of Christ. You can pray for your emotional and physical needs and
ask for God's blessings and gifts. Pray for your husband/wife, children, other people in your
home, extended family, neighbours for them to know God and His will for their lives. Pray for
the church of Christ, for your local assembly, your church leaders, for revival and unity in the
church. Pray for your community from village to national levels, political leaders, monarchs, and
all other affairs of your nation. Prayer for all nations of the world. Pray for the Israel of God.
Pray for sinners, for the grip of satan to lose their minds and for soul winners into the vineyard of
God. Above all, seek for an ever increasing measure of the baptism of the Holy Spirit of God.
The main gist of prayer should be for God's will to be done on earth as it is done in heaven!

How should you pray? We must pray in the Spirit - by the help of the Spirit of God. Prayer is
calling on God to do His will in our affairs, but how can mortal man know the will of God by
himself? No never! Read 1 John 5:14-15 and Romans 8:26-27. It seems to me The Holy Spirit is
the only 'how' to pray effectively. First we must be born again, made the sons of God. Then we
must be filled with The Holy Spirit. This involves a lot to mention but a few; the fullness of God
in His character and nature, power and glory comes and abides in the soul of a mortal. It is
evidenced by a life of holiness, purity, love, humility, fear of the Lord, then the gifts of the Spirit
foremost of which is speaking in other tongues. This heavenly tongue is a great aid in prayer
without which we cannot pray effectively. There's also a praying in the Spirit that is not in an
unknown tongue, this is when in the intensity of prayer the Spirit of God takes over your soul
that though you speak in English or your local dialect, your prayer flows out of your spirit and
not your head. It feels like you intellectually don't have an idea of what you are praying yet it
flows from you in the most natural way. This, my friend, is praying by the help of the Spirit.

In conclusion, I challenge you Christian, are you given to prayer? Do you know your neglect of
this exercise is the cause of the many lost souls in hell, the cause of your defeated life, your
addictions, your poor health, your financial struggles, your failing marriage, your messed up
teenagers, your weak and dead church or fellowship, your morally rotten community and nation?
Our Lord is looking for prayer warriors. The angels of God are released at our commands in
prayer to come down and execute the will of God on earth. How angels are idle in my generation
because of foolish lazy Christians, awake awake sleeping giants! How will you face Christ on
that terrible day when you let Him down in prayer?

Oh come on Christians wake up, strengthen the feeble knees and tiring hands, prove yourself
men, wrestle in prayer, don't let go of the horns of the altar, cry unto God like your Master Jesus
did! Oh Lord I pray for the a revival of prayer meetings in our homes, individual secret prayer
times, prayer meetings in Churches, schools, universities, workplaces. Oh Lord raise the Anna
like widows for 24 hour prayers. Oh LORD pour on us the spirit of grace and supplication.
Amen.

Yours in earnest prayer

Paul Jaiser Samuel
