Kathleen Concialdi and Kenneth Case Jr. of Ed-
more became parents of a baby boy at Carson City
Hospital. Jayden Michael Case was born at 11:08
on Dec. 13, 2010. He weighed 7-pounds, 2-ounces
and was 20.25 inches long. Grandparents are May

Connie and Kenneth Finney of Ionia became
parents of a baby boy at Carson City Hospital. Kevin
Lee Finney was born at 12:09 a.m. on Dec. 11, 2010.
He weighed 8-pounds, 3-ounces and was 22 inches
long. The baby has three brothers, Tyler Finney, Carl
Finney and Michael Finney. Grandparents are Shirley
Williford from Ionia and Phylis Wilson of Pahrump,
Nevada. The mother is the former Connie Williford.

submissions to the contest,”
said Churchill, noting that a
hospital committee that includ-

chose the winning logo. “It was
not an easy decision because
so many students used amaz-
ing creativity and came up with
some really great designs. But
Michelle’s design just worked
perfectly with our plans for cel-
ebrating our 75th anniversary.”

Easy ways to save money in the new year

Do you remember the New Year’s res-
olutions you made last year, or the year
before? If you’re like most Americans,
many of them were probably related to
how you were going to manage your mon-
ey better.
Despite lofty goals, most of these
resolutions likely fell by the wayside and
many of us are still struggling to get by,
especially during tough financial times.
“If the recession has taught us any-
thing, it’s that there’s no time to lose in
making changes towards financial health.
But the trick is to actually follow through
and make the hard choices,” says Michael
McAuliffe, president of Family Credit
Management Services, a non-profit con-
sumer credit counseling service provid-
ing solutions for those seeking financial
assistance.
“You must get to know yourself, your
personal weaknesses, and then make the
changes needed to protect yourself from,
well, you,” says McAuliffe.
Here are five easy ways to help you
gain control of your finances in the New
Year:
Set Goals
Where do you want to be financially
in one, three or five years? Do you want
your credit cards paid off? A fat savings
account? Or how about a vacation paid
with cash, not credit cards? You probably
can have any of these things but you must
make them a priority.
Look at the Big
Picture
A $5 latte may not seem much, but it
adds up to more than $1,800 a year or
more than $9,000 in five years. So ask
yourself if that $5 latte is steering you
away from your goals. How many other
unnecessary expenses are keeping you
from reaching your financial destina-
tion?
Spend Rationally
As long as you aren’t spending more
than you make, you can spend your
money on whatever you’d like. The key
is to not make impulse or emotional pur-
chases. Put a picture of your goal in your
wallet so you are reminded of it each time
you are tempted to spend. Another trick
is to keep your credit cards in sleeves that
remind you to “Stop, Think, Save” before
using them. You can get such sleeves for
free from the non-profit site, www.stop-
thinksave.org.
Evaluate Debt
It’s hard to move forward financially
when you are still paying off Christmas
presents from three years ago. Create a
plan to get out of debt as soon as possible.
This may include reviewing your interest
rates, increasing payments or consulting
an objective credit counselor. Debt-free
living is a reality, but it takes hard work.
Save
Don’t allow a medical emergency,
broken furnace or car repair to create a
financial disaster. Create an emergency
fund and add to it each pay period. Di-
rect deposit is also a great way to save.
Ask your employer to automatically de-
posit a small portion of your pay into a
savings account so you are not tempted
to spend it.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) has been a big deal in health care for many years. We know that as we get older, our
ability to produce hormones steadily decreases. A hormone is a chemical substance manufactured by an organ in our body,
released into the blood, which then causes some action on other cells or target organs. An example would be TSH, thyroid

HRT usually refers to artificially replacing hormones that are missing because of aging, surgery, infection, immune disorders, $ $
etc. In general this means Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone, and DHEA. For this article, we will talk about these hormones

infertility, irregular cycles, severe menstrual cramps, and heavy flow.
After menopause, many women experience hot flashes and other very uncomfortable symptoms. These are due to imbalances

clues as to the medallion’s whereabouts are published weekly in The River
Valley. Treasure hunters may call 937-4740 or check the Village of Howard
City’s website, www.howardcity.org, to find out if the medallion has been
found.
Treasure hunters should abide by all public rules and laws, and should avoid
water or ice-covered areas. Digging and climbing are not necessary.
The lucky treasure hunter who finds the medallion will win the prize package.
The winner should bring the medallion to the Montcalm County Panhandle
Area Chamber of Commerce’s office to verify the medallion’s authenticity.
The Treasure Hunt will end when the medallion is found or the conclusion

(NAPSI)-Preparing your vehicle for rough
weather should be a top priority to reduce
your risk of being out in the cold with the un-
expected expense of emergency repairs.
“The thought of a breakdown, an engine not
starting or otherwise being stranded is stress-
ful as it is, but those things happening in freez-
ing winter weather are extra stressful and cost-
ly,” said Rich White, executive director, Car
Care Council. “An investment of an hour or
two to have your vehicle checked is all it takes
to have peace of mind and help avoid the cost
and hassle of a breakdown.”
The council recommends the following steps:
• Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the
cooling system. As a general rule of thumb,
this should be done every two years.
• Make sure heaters, de?frosters and wipers
work properly. Consider winter wiper blades
and use cold weather washer fluid. As a gen-
eral rule, wiper blades should be replaced ev-
ery six months.
• Have the battery and charging system
checked for optimum performance. Cold
weather is hard on batteries.
• Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure.
If snow and ice are a problem, consider special
tires designed to grip slick roads. During win-
ter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.

Check Your Tires Before Your Trip
(NAPSI)-Keeping your car on the road to
safety and savings can start with something
as simple as well-maintained tires.
According to the Rubber Manufacturers
Association, about 11 percent of vehicles
on the road have at least one bald tire, and
55 percent of vehicles have at least one
underinflated tire.
Ongoing preventive maintenance--which
can take less than 10 minutes--at least
every month or before long trips is the best
method to maximize tire performance, say
the experts at Cooper Tire. Before hitting
the road, drivers should conduct do-it-
yourself maintenance checks, examining
tires for proper inflation, damage or
excessive wear and tear.
• Treading firmly. The only piece of a
vehicle to touch the road is the tires,
making tire tread--a key factor in handling,
cornering, accelerating and braking--a
vital part of overall tire maintenance. Tire
tread depth should be more than 2/32 of an
inch deep all around the tire, and drivers
can check this by using a penny. Insert
the edge of the coin into the tread with
Lincoln going in head first. If the top of
Lincoln’s head is covered by tread, there’s
an acceptable amount of tread; if the top
of his head is visible at any location on
