Experiment#3

1: Objective:
To measure sound level at different work places using sound-meter and compare them with
standard recommendations.

2: Problem statement:
Noise pollution is big factor in our country. It effects the mental health of a human. To
overcome this factor this experiment is necessary.

3: Apparatus:
Sound level meter.

Figure 1

4: Theory:
4.1: Sound
Sound is a pressure wave which is created by a vibrating object. This vibrations set particles
in the sur- rounding medium (typical air) in vibrational motion

4.2: Sound level meter

A sound level meter is used for acoustic (sound that travels through air) measurements. It is
commonly a hand-held instrument with a microphone.

4.3: Units
Decibel (dB)

4.4: Pitch:
Pitch is a property of sounds that allows their ordering on a frequency related scale.

4.5 Frequency:
Frequency of a wave refers to how often the particles of the medium vibrate when a wave
passes through a medium.

5: Procedure:
 By using sound level meter, find the level of sound by putting the meter at different
places in class room.
 By using sound level meter, find the level of sound by putting the meter at different
places in library.
 By using sound level meter, find the level of sound by putting the meter at different
places in office.
 By using sound level meter, find the level of sound by putting the meter at different
places in corridor.
 By using sound level meter, find the level of sound by putting the meter at different
places in machining lab.
 By using sound level meter, find the level of sound by putting the meter at different
places in computer lab.
 Compare the value with standard values and make results.

6: Data collection:
Sr.no. Location Standard Measured Difference
value (dB) Values (dB) (dB)

1. Class room 30 75.18 - 45.18

2. Library 40 67.38 - 27.38
3. Office 35 53.14 - 18.14
4. Corridor 35 65.9 - 30.9
5. Machining lab 85 65.86 19.14
6. Computer lab 50 64.82 - 14.82

7: Comments and conclusion:

Measuring noise levels and workers noise exposures is the most important part of workplace
hearing conversation and noise control program. It helps to identify work locations where
there are noise Problems, employees who way be affected, and where additional noise
measurements need to be made.
